Paul Finebaum: Dabo Swinney is a ‘thin-skinned, spoiled brat’

Paul Finebaum went on the attack Thursday when asked about Dabo Swinney’s “Old Testament” response to a radio caller earlier this week, calling the Clemson coach a “thin-skinned, spoiled brat.”

During Monday’s edition of “Tiger Calls,” a caller identified only as “Tyler from Spartanburg” asked Swinney
why he’s paid nearly $11 million per year if his team is now 4-4
and seemingly getting worse by the year.

Finebaum, who joined me on “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5 in Mobile, didn’t mince words about the Pelham, Alabama, native.

“I don’t think he has a point at all,” Finebaum said about Swinney’s rant. “Wat I’m surprised about is why are people defending Dabo Swinney? I think he made a complete and total fool out of himself. I think it’s embarrassing behavior when the head coach of a major school gets into a food fight with a caller to a radio show.”

“I’ve listened to enough of you, Tyler,” Swinney said Monday. “You can have all your opinions that you want. I don’t know how old you are, don’t really care. But let me tell you something, we won 11 games last year.

“You’re part of the problem, because that is part of the problem, Tyler. It’s people like you … the expectation is greater than the appreciation. That’s the problem.”

Finebaum added it is the latest example of why Swinney, a former Alabama walk-on receiver, doesn’t come up in random conversations about who and when someone will replace Nick Saban as the Crimson Tide coach.

“I’m not saying he wants it,” Finebaum said. “I’m not saying anything. But he’s a thin-skinned, spoiled brat who I think has lost credibility around college football whether fans defend him or not. … When you are the face of a program, you don’t do what he did. You don’t talk down to people.”

The Monday rant – Finebaum said – does nothing more than highlight Swinney’s insecurities.

“Can you imagine Nick Saban getting in an argument with someone on the radio?” Finebaum asked. “‘Hey, you know how many degrees I have? You know how many national championships I have? You know how long I’ve been married?’

“Well, I know all that Dabo. Frankly, I’m shocked. I think it was one of the most embarrassing performances of a public figure that I’ve seen in an extraordinarily long time. It’s an indication that Dabo Swinney knows it’s over for him. He’s not relevant figure in college football anymore.”

Finebaum’s blistering remarks ended with the SEC Network analyst declaring Swinney is more like Tommy Bowden at the end of his Clemson run than Saban at Alabama.
