Patriots’ Jonathan Jones questions NFL gambling policy

After the NFL suspended four players on Thursday for violating the league’s gambling policy, New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones wondered why he can’t bet on his team to win its game.

“I understand rules are rules,” Jones wrote on his Twitter account. “But I can risk my life so that my team wins, but I can’t risk 1K on my team winning.”

The NFL suspended three players indefinitely on Thursday for betting on league games.

Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers and tight end Rashod Berry were released by the Indianapolis Colts after the NFL announced their suspensions. The third suspended player, defensive tackle Demetrius Taylor, was not on an NFL roster after playing in one game for the Detroit Lions last season.

The NFL also suspended Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere for the first six games of the 2023 regular season. Petit-Frere was suspended for betting on non-NFL games while at a club facility.

The NFL’s gambling policy prohibits anyone in the league from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or NFL facility or venue.

On April 21, the NFL had suspended five players for violating the league’s gambling policy. C.J. Moore and Quintez Cephus of Detroit and Shaka Toney of the Washington Commanders received indefinite suspensions, and the Lions’ Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill got banned for six games.

Detroit released Moore and Cephus after they were suspended.

The players serving indefinite suspensions can appeal to the NFL after the 2023 season to be reinstated.

Last week, the NFL tried to distill its gambling policy into six rules for players to remember. Those rules were:

· Don’t bet on the NFL.

· Don’t gamble at your team facility, while traveling for a road game or staying at a team hotel.

· Don’t have someone bet for you.

· Don’t share team “inside information.”

· Don’t enter a sportsbook during the NFL playing season.

· Don’t play daily fantasy football.

Jones is preparing for his eighth NFL season with New England. He joined the Patriots as an undrafted rookie from Auburn in 2016.

In the 2022 campaign, Jones had 69 tackles, four interceptions, 11 passes defended and three forced fumbles in 16 starts for New England.

Jones signed a two-year, $19 million contract extension with the Patriots in March.
