Patriots QB Mac Jones enjoying Bill O’Brien’s ‘toolbox’

After the New England offense floundered in his second NFL season, Patriots quarterback Mac Jones sees new offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien as Mr. Fix-It.

“There’s things that pop up in practice – issues,” Jones said on Monday. “And we just try to fix them on the run, or we have tools to do that. It’s all about your toolbox. That’s what’s so great about the system. You use it as a quarterback. Obviously, the most is put on you, but that’s a good thing because you have tools to kind of fix it. That’s been really good to kind of work on some of those things.”

After placing sixth in the NFL in scoring in Jones’ rookie season, New England dropped to 17th in points last year, when offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The drop-off occurred without a titled offensive coordinator on head coach Bill Belichick’s staff and with offensive-line coach Matt Patricia calling the plays.

The Patriots are back to a traditional model this year after getting O’Brien from Alabama, where Jones was an All-American in 2020.

“I think we have a great coaching staff,” Jones said. “Been really blessed to work with some great coaches. I always talk about high school and college and here. I always try to learn stuff from everybody and ask questions. And (O’Brien’s) done a great job with that. Coach Belichick’s done a great job. So definitely just want to learn and be a sponge. That’s all I can do, right? And just pick (Belichick’s) brain about defense, because he’s really good with the defensive side of the ball, and learning that part of it because that’s really what he does really, really well, so it’s been great to learn from him.

“And the players, too. Like, you learn so much from guys like (safety Adrian Phillips) and the older guys, (safety Kyle) Dugger and everybody. Just talking with them, like, ‘Hey, did that trick you or not?’ You know, it’s OTAs, so you kind of just play around with some things and try new things. Kind of just take a little bit of everything, so, yeah, it’s been good.”

New England might make another addition to its offense this offseason with three-time first-team All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins reportedly visiting the Patriots this week. The Arizona Cardinals released Hopkins on May 26.

On Monday, Belichick said New England had talked to Hopkins, but when the wide receiver might visit, “I’m not really a travel agent here.”

Hopkins had six 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his first eight NFL campaigns, but he has missed 15 games over the past two years, when he had 106 receptions for 1,289 yards and 11 touchdowns.

I think that’s definitely a hypothetical, but I think DeAndre’s a great player,” Jones said about the possibility of the Patriots signing Hopkins. “You watch his film from college all the way through the NFL, he’s done a great job, so, obviously, we’d love to have him. But we do have a great group of guys, and we just know that we want to win. I know that all the guys feel the same way. But I’ve been really pleased with the playmakers that we have on this team.

“We’ve come out here and really bought into the system, and that’ll really show in training camp and preseason. It’s sometimes hard to show it out here, but I’ve been really pleased with the tight ends, running backs and all the receivers. The young guys, the old guys like (DeVante Parker) and everybody. We have a good group and definitely feel like we just need to keep growing together, and whoever’s in that room, we’re just going to try to dominate together.”

New England is in the final week of its offseason program.

“Everything’s been good, man,” Jones said. “Every day, just trying to hit all the buckets, working out, running, then coming out here with the team, trying to have fun, trying to compete. I definitely feel like we’re competing against each other, which is really good, going back and forth. We got a really good defense we get to go against, so it makes it a lot harder every day. But I feel like we’ve made some progress.”

The Patriots’ three-day mandatory minicamp started on Monday. New England’s offseason program is scheduled to end with Wednesday’s practice, kicking off the summer break until the players return for training camp late next month.

“Obviously, we have tomorrow to finish really strong and Wednesday,” Jones said on Monday, “so we know what we have to do to kind of top this thing off and make it really good.”
