Patriot makes pitch to 2 NFL free agents from Alabama
Only two NFL teams have more money to spend than New England this offseason, and Patriots pass-rusher Matt Judon made a pitch to two former Alabama standouts to come get some on Wednesday.
Appearing on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” Judon singled out Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley as impending free agents he hoped would sign with New England.
Jacobs and Ridley are among the hundreds of players whose contracts will expire at 3 p.m. CDT March 13, leaving them free to sign with any NFL team.
Jacobs led the NFL in rushing with 1,653 yards and yards from scrimmage with 2,053 in the 2022 season. After the Raiders used their franchise tag on Jacobs last offseason, it set off a contract impasse that lasted more than five months.
That got Jacobs off to a late start to team practices, and he ended the season by missing the final four games because of a quadriceps injury. Jacobs finished the 2023 season with 805 yards and six touchdowns on 233 carries and 296 yards on 37 receptions.
“We have a great running back,” Judon said. “We just need another one, so I’m saying Josh Jacobs, come on out of Nevada. They haven’t treated you well. You won a rushing title, and nobody even talk about it. If you do that in New England, No. 1-selling jersey. I’m just saying.
“I think you and Rhamondre (Stevenson) would be a great one-two punch. It’s a 1A-1B type thing. I see y’all as that. Y’all will never get tired, so y’all going to be running crazy. Especially if we don’t know who we’re going to have at quarterback, we definitely need good running backs.”

Last season, Demario “Pop” Douglas led the Patriots’ wide receivers with 49 receptions and 561 yards. He did not catch a touchdown pass. Ridley had 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns on 76 receptions for the Jaguars in 2023 as he returned to the field after missing the 2022 season.
“Calvin Ridley, come on over to the Red, White and Blue,” Judon said. “We have a spot for you. Nobody wears zero. It’s all yours. I think he wears a size-9 cleat. We got all the size-9 cleats. I don’t know what size he wears. I’m just saying whatever you need we got. Every catch, you need a new pair of shoes? We got you. New pair of gloves? We got you.”

With the NFL salary cap for 2024 jumping to $255.4 million, the Patriots have $78.476 million to spend before reaching that figure. Only the Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans have fatter wallets this offseason.
After New England went 4-13 in 2023 for its worst showing since 1992, the Patriots are preparing for their first season without Bill Belichick as their head coach since 1999. Defensive assistant Jerod Mayo ascended to head coach for 2024.
