Patrick Mahomes prays for Kansas City after parade shooting; Marcus Spears says âthis is who we areâ
Patrick Mahomes sent a simple but profound message to the people of Kansas City on Wednesday after one person was killed and up to 15 were injured in a shooting at the end of the parade to celebrate the Super Bowl win by the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Praying for Kansas City,” the quarterback posted on “X,” the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves detailed the shooting’s toll at a news conference and said two people had been taken into custody.
Kansas City police responded Wednesday to a shooting near the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl rally at Union Station where officials said two armed people were detained.
ESPN’s Marcus Spears made some poignant comments in the aftermath of the shooting.
“When I first heard it, you know what I thought, unfortunately, is this is who we are,” Spears said.
“This is who we are. So, now the ever-revolving cycle is going to start. The news outlets will talk about gun control. They’ll have politicians from either side to talk about what needs to be done. The activism. The people will speak about how we need gun control. We need gun laws. And then we’ll have a ‘prayers up,’ I’m sure that’s what’s happening right now. …
“The bottom line is it happens too much in the country. That’s the bottom line. As we move forward as we talk about football, we just coming off a Super Bowl, I was excited to come on today and talk about the Kansas City Chiefs parade. … It doesn’t even matter anymore. That’s the magnitude of what’s happening and it happens too often in the country we live in.”
