Pastor Mike Jr. on Today Show: Apostle Paul would use social media
Rock City Church Pastor Mike McClure Jr. of Birmingham was featured on NBC’s “Today Show” this week, talking about his use of social media.
McClure, a singer who goes by Pastor Mike Jr. and now has 2 million followers on TikTok, said it’s what the Apostle Paul would do if he were spreading the gospel today.
“If Paul was here, would he write a letter or would he post it?” McClure told NBC Today anchor Craig Melvin for a segment that aired Thursday. “I’m going to post every step of what I’m doing.”
McClure founded Rock City in 2009 and began livestreaming worship services even before the Covid pandemic made it common. The church now has weekly attendance of more than 3,000.
“We created an atmosphere where you can come as you are, but you won’t stay as you are,” he said.
McClure does live chats on an Instagram group called “The Flock,” and people sharing their problems influences his message: “That helps me know what to preach about,” he said.
“I’m not preaching a compromised gospel,” McClure said. “I’m telling people if you don’t live right, there are consequences. But I believe I’m doing it in a way that, I’m using subtle language in my message, like, ‘Here’s where we fail. Let’s go through life together.‘”
