Panthers fire GM who traded to pick Bryce Young

Last offseason, Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer traded for the No 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. After using that choice on Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, Fitterer started the 2024 offseason by being fired.

On Monday, the day after the Panthers closed a 2-15 season with a 9-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina announced it had parted ways with Fitterer after three seasons on the job.

“As we move forward with the new direction for our franchise, I have made the decision that Scott Fitterer will no longer serve as our general manager,” team owner David Tepper said. “I appreciate Scott’s efforts and wish the best for him and his family.”

Fitterer joined the Panthers after they posted 5-11 records in 2019 and 2020.

After Carolina went 5-12 in 2021 and 7-10 in 2022 under coach Matt Rhule and interim coach Steve Wilks, Fitterer traded wide receiver D.J. Moore, the ninth and 61st selections in the 2023 NFL Draft, a first-round pick in 2024 and a second-round choice in 2025 to the Chicago Bears for the first pick in the 2023 draft.

After the Panthers posted the NFL’s worst record in 2023, the Bears hold the first pick in this year’s draft.

Fitterer used the No. 1 choice on Young, Alabama’s 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, and the quarterback started every game but one, which he missed because of an ankle injury.

With Carolina at 1-10, the Panthers fired coach Frank Reich, and special-teams coordinator Chris Tabor served as the interim coach for the final six games of the season.

In his rookie season, Young completed 315-of-527 passes for 2,877 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Of the 32 quarterbacks who threw at least 240 passes this season, Young’s passing-efficiency rating of 73.7 was the worst. His average gain of 5.5 yards per pass and 9.0 yards per completion also ranked last.

Young endured 62 sacks in 16 games.

In contrast, C.J. Stroud, taken by Houston from Ohio State at No. 2 in the 2023 NFL Draft, completed 319-of-499 passes for 4,108 yards with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions, helping the Texans transform from a 3-13-1 team in 2022 to a 10-7 division winner in 2023. Stroud posted a passing-efficiency rating of 100.8, sixth-best in the NFL, and was sacked 38 times.
