Panthers don’t expect Bryce Young to play on Sunday

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young did not practice again on Thursday, and the former Alabama All-America is not expected to play in Sunday’s game, the NFL team’s official website announced.

The Panthers are scheduled to play the Seattle Seahawks at 3:05 p.m. CDT Sunday at Lumen Field in Seattle.

The No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft on April 27, Young started Carolina’s first two games of the 2023 campaign. Although he finished Monday night’s 20-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints, Young sustained an ankle injury that has kept him out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Panthers plan to start Andy Dalton at quarterback.

Dalton did not divulge Carolina’s plans when he was brought in for the press conference that usually features Young on Thursday.

“For me, I’m just preparing the same way I prepare every week,” Dalton said when asked if he expected to start on Sunday. “We’ll see how it goes as the week goes on. With Bryce down right now, I’m getting the reps and preparing like I do every week.”

Dalton doesn’t expect to hold the starting spot long.

“Whenever Bryce is healthy, you know he’s going to step right back in there,” Dalton said, “and he’s going to be the one playing. …

“My goal is to win. Especially here, this is Bryce’s thing. I’m not here to make this a competition. I’m here to help the team.”

Dalton joined Carolina as a free agent in March to serve as a place-holder and mentor for whichever college quarterback the Panthers chose with the No. 1 pick. In his 13th NFL season, Dalton has 171 starts and three Pro Bowl selections.

In his NFL debut, Young completed 20-of-38 passes for 146 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and ran for 17 yards on three carries in a 24-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 10.

Against New Orleans, Young completed 22-of-33 passes for 153 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran for 34 yards on three carries.
