Panoply 2023 music, highlights announced for classic Huntsville festival
More than ever, this year’s Panoply Arts Festival will be an event you could only experience in Huntsville. The festival’s 2023 music lineup lifts up many of the city’s best acts, include indie group the Wanda Band and rock combo Rob Aldridge & The Proponents. Local flavors flow, courtesy of breweries Straight to Ale and Yellowhammer and more than a dozen local food trucks, including, O Taste & See BBQ, New South Hotdog and Sushi and Teresita’s Tamales. Interactive arts and education facets that are this classic Huntsville event’s heartbeat are back, more vibrant than ever, involving everything from artwork to Huntsville’s ballet and symphony.
Panoply 2023 is set for April 28 – 20 at its familiar Big Spring Park, downtown at 200 Church Street, setting. The yearly festival is organized and run by local nonprofit Arts Huntsville.
In addition to the youth-oriented arts programming, affordability a key reason Panoply’s been a Huntsville family favorite since the Reagan administration. Panoply 2023 continues that trend with $18 advance weekend passes and advance $10 day passes, available now via artshuntsville.org. Children ages 12 and under are admitted to the festival free of charge.
Festivals come and go in Huntsville, but this one endures. After debuting in 1982, Panoply’s only not taken place twice, after the deadly 2011 North Alabama tornados and in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Panoply poster artwork is a beloved festival tradition. This year’s imagery was created by Denise Onwere, a creator/educator from Huntsville’s sprawling arts center, Lowe Mill. As a visual artist, she’s drawn inspiration from her father, saxophonist Jeff Clayton, who performed with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Madonna and B.B. King.
Another Panoply tradition, a big end-of-the-night fireworks display, will punctuate Friday and Saturday at the festival.
Panoply 2023 music headliners include the aforementioned Wanda Band on Friday and The Proponents on Saturday. Tuscaloosa teenage country phenom Jackson Chase headlines Sunday. While past Panoply headliners have typically been national touring acts, including the likes of Indigo Girls and John Paul White, this year’s fest doubles-down on Panoply’s recent trend to highlight top local original music.
Panoply’s 2023 Huntsville/North Alabama based music performers include: Trick Zipper Trio, featuring singer Billy Allen, known for his appearance on TV singing competition “X Factor”; R&B vocalists Chelsea Who, Karmessa and Pat Jamar; folk-rock band The Silver Silos; pop artist Remy Neal; and rising indie duo Common Man. A complete lineup is available at artshuntsville.org.
