Panama City mayor accused of groping employee during Fourth of July photo

The mayor of Panama City, Fla., who said in October allowing people to openly carry alcohol in the city’s downtown area would increase the divorce rate, is now accused of groping one of his employees.

According to a memo obtained by WJHG in Panama City, Mayor Michael Rohan Sr. groped the woman’s buttocks while preparing to take a photo in preparation of the City’s July 4 events.

The memo from the City’s human resources department said the employee was asked during a meeting over the accusation if the contact could have been accidental. The employee responded that Rohan had “grabbed” her buttocks and made a grabbing motion while describing it.

The employee’s accusation was discussed during Tuesday’s Panama City Commission meeting. Commissioners voted to send the issue to the Florida Ethics Commission in Tallahassee for review, according to the report. Under questioning, Rohan referred those questions to his attorney.

In October, Rohan balked at the creation of a social, or entertainment, district in downtown Panama City, which would allow residents and visitors to openly carry alcohol on city streets. Rohan called the plan “the dumbest thing I had ever heard in my entire life” and that allowing the public consumption of alcohol would “probably get even a higher divorce rate.”

In mid-November, the commission approved the downtown social district, despite Rohan’s objections. He was the lone commission member to vote against it, according to the Panama City News Herald.
