Pair of transfer DB targets visit Alabama football ahead of decisions

Alabama may be close to bolstering its secondary.

Jaylen Key and Trenayvian Amos, two defensive back targets who recently entered the transfer portal, have both been offered by the Crimson Tide and spent part of the last week in Tuscaloosa. Their visits and potential decisions come as Alabama is in need of a few bodies in the secondary following its own pair of portal departures this spring.

Key, formerly at UAB, tweeted about his plans to be at Alabama on Monday. It will be his second trip since April 26. He had previously toured Florida State and had trips scheduled to Ole Miss, Oregon and Ohio State, but canceled the latter two. Amos, from Louisiana, posted on his Instagram a picture with Tide secondary coach Travaris Robinson. He went north after stopping by LSU over the weekend.

Both highly-coveted defenders would bring experience to Nick Saban’s secondary. Only two of its currently rostered cornerbacks, Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold, have extensive starting experience. Malachi Moore leads a group of returners among the safeties but that position took a hit when both Jahquez Robinson and Tre’Quon Fegans transferred to the Pac-12.

“I think sometimes … my experience with this is a little bit like free agency in the NFL,” Saban said on April 20. “NFL players kind of know they’re expendable. I think some college players sometimes think the portal is a one-way street, but it’s really not, because we have an opportunity to bring guys in and replace them, too, if we choose to do that.

“We’d rather make it work with the guys that understand the culture in our program. But that’s just another, you know, resource that you look at players and see if there’s any way you can help the team and strengthen your roster.”

Amos has two seasons of eligibility remaining. The New Iberia, Louisiana native made 26 tackles, eight pass breakups and one blocked field goal. Key was an all-around contributor for the Blazers last fall, recording 60 tackles and two interceptions. Key is also considering the Tide against a hometown program as FSU tries to bring the Tallahassee, Florida standout into the ACC.

The Crimson Tide has pulled in three transfers since the start of last season, tight end CJ Dippre (Maryland), linebacker Trezmen Marshall (Georgia) and most recently, quarterback Tyler Buchner (Notre Dame).

In the past, Saban has looked to transfers as plug-and-play pieces, but in the case of Amos and Key, it’s unclear how they’d stack up in the rotation with Moore, Caleb Downs, Earl Little Jr. and Kristian Story all making a case for playing time this spring.
