The National Weather Service issued a weather alert at 5:46 p.m. on Saturday for strong thunderstorms until 6:30 p.m. for Marion County.
Residents may experience wind gusts of up to 40 mph.
“At 5:46 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm near Guin, or 7 miles south of Hamilton, moving east at 15 mph,” states the weather service. “Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.”
Locations impacted by the alert include Hamilton, Winfield, Guin, Brilliant, Glen Allen, Gu-Win, Lake Buttahatchee, Twin, Tucker, Pearces Mill, Texas, Marion County Public Lake, Piney Grove and Pikeville.
The weather service comments, “If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.”
Staying safe as lightning approaches: Expert advice
Lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times each year, with the bulk of these electrical discharges occurring during the summer months. Tragically, lightning claims the lives of about 20 individuals annually, as reported by the weather service. The risk of lightning-related incidents escalates as thunderstorms draw near, reaching its peak when the storm directly looms overhead. However, it gradually recedes as the tempest moves away.
To protect yourself during a thunderstorm, take these recommendations into consideration:
Lightning safety plan:
When venturing outdoors, it’s vital to establish a clear plan for seeking shelter in case of lightning.
Stay vigilant by monitoring the sky for ominous signs and listening for the telltale sound of thunder. If thunder is audible, it’s a clear indication of nearby lightning.
Seek shelter promptly in a safe location, preferably indoors.
Indoors safety measures:
Once you’ve found shelter indoors, abstain from using corded phones, electrical appliances, or plumbing fixtures, and refrain from approaching windows and doors.
Lightning can follow conductive pathways, and these precautions reduce the risk of electrical surges.
Wait for the all-clear:
After the last lightning strike or thunderclap, wait at least 30 minutes before resuming outdoor activities.
Lightning can strike even when a storm has seemingly passed, so exercise caution.
When indoor shelter isn’t available:
If you find yourself outdoors with no access to indoor shelter during a thunderstorm, take these steps to maximize your safety:
Avoid open fields, hilltops, or ridge crests, which expose you to greater lightning risk.
Steer clear of tall, isolated trees and other prominent objects. In wooded areas, stay close to lower stands of trees.
If you’re with a group, ensure individuals are spread out to prevent lightning current from transferring between people.
Camping in an open setting during a thunderstorm is strongly discouraged. If no alternative exists, set up camp in a valley, ravine, or other low-lying areas. Remember that a tent offers no protection against lightning.
Do not approach water bodies, wet objects, or metal items. While water and metal don’t attract lightning, they conduct electricity effectively and can pose significant risks.
In summary, when facing the threat of lightning, vigilance and preparedness are your best allies. By following these guidelines, you can significantly reduce the chances of lightning-related accidents and prioritize your safety.
Mastering wet roads: Safety tips for heavy rainfall
When heavy rain strikes, safety is paramount. Equip yourself with these guidelines from the weather service to navigate wet roads and avoid hazards:
Beware of swollen waterways:
Avoid parking or walking in close proximity to culverts or drainage ditches, as the swiftly moving water during heavy rain can potentially carry you away.
Maintain safe driving distances:
The two-second rule for following distance is your ally in heavy rain. Extend it to four seconds to ensure safe spacing in adverse conditions.
Reduce speed and drive cautiously:
On wet roads, reducing your speed is crucial. Ease off the gas pedal gradually and avoid abrupt braking to prevent skidding.
Choose your lane wisely:
Stick to the middle lanes on multi-lane roads to minimize the risk of hydroplaning, as water tends to accumulate in outer lanes.
Visibility matters:
Enhance your visibility in heavy rain by activating your headlights. Be particularly vigilant for vehicles in blind spots, as rain-smeared windows can obscure them.
Watch out for slippery roads:
The first half-hour of rain is when roads are slickest due to a mix of rain, grime, and oil. Exercise heightened caution during this period.
Keep a safe distance from large vehicles:
Large trucks and buses can reduce your visibility with tire spray. Avoid tailgating and pass them swiftly and safely.
Mind your windshield wipers:
Overloaded wiper blades can hinder visibility. If rain severely impairs your vision, pull over and wait for conditions to improve. Seek refuge at rest areas or sheltered spots.
When stopping by the roadside is your only option, position your vehicle as far off the road as possible, ideally beyond guardrails. Keep your headlights on and activate emergency flashers to alert other drivers of your position.
In the face of heavy rain, these precautions can make a significant difference in ensuring your safety on the road. Remember to stay informed about weather conditions and heed guidance from local authorities for a secure journey.

A man who held police at bay for seven hours on the roof of a Bessemer house is accused of using his two children as human shield and threatening to throw them off the roof.
Bessemer police charged Nelson Giovann Gomez-Orllana with two counts of willful child abuse, two counts of making a terrorist threat, resisting arrest and criminal mischief, according to newly release court records.
One week ago today, Bessemer police were called to the house in the 2300 block of Clarendon Avenue at 3:10 a.m. on a report of people on the roof.
When they arrived, they found Gomez-Orllana and two young children perched on top of the house.
Det. Justin Burmeister said the man refused to come down.
A crisis intervention specialist from Ryan’s Hope Foundation responded to the scene and with the help of a Spanish-speaking officer, tried to negotiate and convince the man to come down from the roof.
Bessemer firefighters help remove two child from the roof of a house where they and a man had been perched for roughly seven hours while police tried to talk him down.(Facebook)
Live video of the event on Facebook showed the man hugging his children and crying.
Police said he had not been wanted for any crime at that point.
Charging documents against Gomez-Orllana say he told police he would throw his children, ages 7 and 12, off the roof if they intervened during the seven-hour standoff.
The child abuse charges also included the man forcing the children to remain on a rooftop for hours without food or water and using them as a human shield, according to the court records.
During the standoff, records state, Gomez-Orllana damaged homes by removing and throwing roof shingles and ventilation components, leading to the criminal mischief charge.
The terrorist threat charges stem from the man causing a disruption to governmental operations, according to court records, by diminishing their capacity to respond to other calls for service, and in activating the city’s Special Response Team and Crisis Intervention Team, weakening the department’s ability to address other public safety needs.
Eventually, Gomez-Orllana and the boys jumped from the roof and used a tree to access a second roof.
Bessemer firefighters were seen using a ladder truck to bring down the two children shortly before 10 a.m. that Saturday.
Gomez-Orllana was taken into custody and treated for minor injuries.
Gomez-Orlanna was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Thursday night and remains held on bonds total $69,000.

It was easy to tell how many years that AJ McCarron has fielded his football camp in Mobile. Every shirt on the field had the answer.
The youngsters running around at the AJ McCarron Football Camp on Saturday on the turf at Mobile Christian School’s Harrison Stadium sported shirts with “McCarron 10” on the back. That was the quarterback’s number as a three-time national champion at Alabama. But it’s also the number of camps that he’s sponsored since he left the Crimson Tide for the NFL.
And Saturday’s camp, like the nine before it, was free to attend.
“I have an issue with when you have the means to do it or the connections and you’re charging kids to come to a camp,” McCarron said. “I understand it. Somebody’s paying you, a company’s paying you to be there. But if it’s your own camp and you have the resources to be able to put on a free camp, you should be doing that. I don’t care if you’re in the pros or even in college now. You have no excuse. You’re getting paid, and you should have the resources and connection with your agency to be able to put on a free camp for the kids in your city.
“That’s one thing that bugs me when I see people putting on their own camps and charging kids. I don’t understand it. As long as we can do this and kids want to show up and have fun, we’re going to keep doing it. That’s something I look forward to.”
Most of Saturday’s football campers probably weren’t born when McCarron starred for the Crimson Tide.
McCarron was an All-State football and baseball player at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile. He served as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback when Alabama won the BCS national championships for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. McCarron won the Maxwell Award as the outstanding college player of the 2013 season, when he also was the runner-up in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy.
McCarron has had a nine-season NFL career and played two seasons with the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL and the UFL.
After their work on the field, the campers went into the Mobile Christian School gym for a question-and-answer session with McCarron, where he talked about the importance of practice, schoolwork and steering clear of trouble.
McCarron also told the youngsters and their parents: “When we started this 10 years ago, I never thought we’d still have it going.” Then he asked the campers if they’d be back for next year’s camp, which got a resounding positive response.
“You never know,” McCarron said about the way he felt then and the way he does now about the camp. “You hope you have the support and the kids want to be a part of it. Whether I like it or not, I’m getting older, so you hope that your legacy lives on and the kids will know what you did and the work you put in and everything. It’s awesome to see. Heck, I’ve been out of college for – what now? …
“It’s awesome to still be doing it, and, hopefully, we can get more kids and keep growing this thing and be back next year.”
A standard feature of each McCarron camp has been the quarterback’s goal to complete a pass to every camper. On Saturday, he had a 100 percent completion rate. Not that some balls didn’t hit the ground, but the QB and receiver kept trying until the connection was made.
The youngsters also go home with a camp card autographed as they watch by McCarron, who also signed shirts, shoes, caps and footballs on Saturday.
Assisting at the camp were Mobile Christian coach Charles Lawson, his staff and Leopards players.

For the uninitiated, for several seconds earlier this week at a Coldplay concert, a couple was shown on the big screen. They were cuddling and smiling, his arms wrapped around her, as she leaned back into him. When they saw themselves on the big screen, her jaw dropped, her hands flew to her face and she spun away from the camera. He ducked out of the frame, as did she.
“Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy,” Martin joked.
As it turns out, it was Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and chief people officer Kristin Cabot – both married – who were in the embrace. The video went viral and the Internet hasn’t been the same since.
