Anticipate strong thunderstorms in Franklin County early Monday evening – gusts as high as 50 mph

A report from the National Weather Service was issued on Monday at 5:02 p.m. for strong thunderstorms until 5:45 p.m. for Franklin County.

Residents may experience wind gusts of up to 50 mph.

“At 5:02 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm 8 miles southwest of Belgreen, or 9 miles east of Red Bay. This thunderstorm was nearly stationary,” according to the weather service. “Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.”

Locations impacted by the alert include Belgreen, Vina, Hodges, Cedar Creek Reservoir, Atwood, Dempsey, Duketon, Little Bear Creek Reservoir and Halltown.

The weather service adds, “If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.”

Lightning on the horizon: Expert safety measures for thunderstorms

Each year, lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times, with the majority of these electrifying events occurring during the summer months. Unfortunately, lightning is responsible for claiming the lives of approximately 20 people annually, as reported by the weather service. The threat of lightning becomes more pronounced as thunderstorms draw nearer, peaking when the storm is directly overhead and gradually waning as it moves away.

To protect yourself during a thunderstorm, take these recommendations into consideration:

Lightning safety plan:

  • When venturing outdoors, it’s vital to establish a clear plan for seeking shelter in case of lightning.
  • Monitor the sky for threatening signs and listen for the sound of thunder. If thunder is audible, it’s an indication that lightning is nearby.
  • Seek shelter promptly in a safe location, preferably indoors.

Indoors safety measures:

  • Once you’ve found shelter indoors, abstain from using corded phones, electrical appliances, or plumbing fixtures, and refrain from approaching windows and doors.
  • Lightning can follow conductive pathways, and these precautions reduce the risk of electrical surges.

Wait for the all-clear:

  • After the last lightning strike or thunderclap, wait at least 30 minutes before resuming outdoor activities.
  • Lightning can strike even when a storm has seemingly passed, so exercise caution.

When indoor shelter isn’t available:

If you find yourself outdoors without access to indoor shelter during a thunderstorm, take these steps to maximize your safety:

  • Avoid open fields, hilltops, or ridge crests, which expose you to greater lightning risk.
  • Steer clear of tall, isolated trees and other prominent objects. In forested areas, stay close to lower stands of trees.
  • If you’re with a group, ensure individuals are spread out to prevent lightning current from transferring between people.
  • Camping in an open setting during a thunderstorm is strongly discouraged. If no alternative exists, set up camp in a valley, ravine, or other low-lying areas. Remember that a tent offers no protection against lightning.
  • Do not approach water bodies, wet objects, or metal items. Although water and metal do not attract lightning, they conduct electricity effectively and can pose significant risks.

In summary, when facing the threat of lightning, vigilance and preparedness are your best allies. By following these guidelines, you can significantly reduce the chances of lightning-related accidents and prioritize your safety.

Driving through downpours: Safety guidelines for wet roads

When heavy rain pours, the risk of flooding and treacherous roads rises. Here’s your guide from the weather service to staying safe during downpours:

Beware of swollen waterways:

Avoid parking or walking in close proximity to culverts or drainage ditches, as the swiftly moving water during heavy rain can potentially carry you away.

Maintain safe driving distances:

Adhere to the two-second rule for maintaining a safe following distance behind the vehicle in front of you. In heavy rain, allow an additional two seconds of distance to compensate for reduced traction and braking effectiveness.

Slow down and drive with care:

On wet roads, slowing down is paramount. Gradually ease off the accelerator and avoid abrupt braking to prevent skidding.

Choose your lane wisely:

Stick to the middle lanes to minimize the risk of hydroplaning. Outer lanes are more prone to accumulating water.

Visibility matters:

Enhance your visibility in heavy rain by activating your headlights. Be particularly vigilant for vehicles in blind spots, as rain-smeared windows can obscure them.

Watch out for slippery roads:

The first half-hour of rain is when roads are slickest due to a mix of rain, grime, and oil. Exercise heightened caution during this period.

Keep a safe distance from large vehicles:

Large trucks and buses can reduce your visibility with tire spray. Avoid tailgating and pass them swiftly and safely.

Mind your windshield wipers:

Overloaded wiper blades can hinder visibility. If rain severely impairs your vision, pull over and wait for conditions to improve. Seek refuge at rest areas or sheltered spots.

When stopping by the roadside is your only option, position your vehicle as far off the road as possible, ideally beyond guardrails. Keep your headlights on and activate emergency flashers to alert other drivers of your position.

By following these safety measures, you can significantly reduce risks and ensure your well-being when heavy rain pours down. Stay informed about weather conditions and heed advice from local authorities to make your journey safe and sound.

Free 2 Teach Foundation announces second-largest donation in its history

As it prepares for the coming school year, a Huntsville foundation that equips teachers with free classroom supplies announced the second-largest donation in its history.

Free 2 Teach has received $80,000 from Landers McLarty Subaru as part of the Subaru Share the Love campaign, the foundation announced Monday.

“Subaru is making an incredible investment in the thousands of teachers and children we serve at Free 2 Teach,” foundation CEO Alison Kling said in a news release. “Together we are impacting children by investing in their teachers.”

The foundation’s largest single grant came in November from Meta.

Subaru Share the Love is a national giving program that has resulted in $320 million raised over eighteen years for charities selected by local vehicle retailers.

“We are so impressed by the work and vision of the team at Free 2 Teach and honored to partner with them as part of Subaru Share the Love campaign,” said Frank Williams, Managing Partner and Executive Manager for Landers McLarty. “I am proud to partner with an organization dedicated to providing teachers with the tools they need to inspire children in our public schools.”

Monday was also the opening of the foundation’s store for the 2025-2026 school year. Kling said 135 teachers passed through the doors at 3054 Leeman Ferry Road.

The free store is open 11 months of the year, and the more than 6,000 public school teachers in Limestone and Madison counties can shop for free monthly. Free 2 Teach says that in more than 14 years it has given away over $14.7 million in supplies.

Donations can be made at the foundation’s website.

Longtime Madison County lawmaker stepping down after four decades in the Alabama Legislature

Longtime Madison County legislator Tom Butler will announce his retirement from the Alabama State Senate on Tuesday.

Butler, 81, is currently serving his fourth term representing parts of Madison and Limestone counties. Butler was first elected to the State Senate in 1994 after serving in the House since 1982. He served in the Senate through 2010 before being elected again in 2018.

Road projects have been a priority during his time in the Legislature. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said Butler played an instrumental role in helping bring the $92 million U.S. 72 widening project to his district, which is expected to get underway in the next couple of years. He has also championed four-laning Alabama 53 from Huntsville to the Tennessee state line.

Butler has also played an instrumental role in securing $7 million in funding for a replacement Saturn IB rocket at the Alabama welcome center in Ardmore, calling it “a positive iconic symbol” for the state in an interview with AL.com. He said it was a shame when the original was taken down.

The state is in the process of designing the replica and putting out a request for a proposal for the replacement.

Butler serves as chairman of the Senate’s Governmental Affairs Committee. He also serves on the finance and taxation, fiscal responsibility and economic development, transportation and energy, and health care committees.

He is vice chairman of the Madison County Senate delegation.

Butler is a retired pharmacist.

Questions on Texas flood warning can wait, Cruz says: ‘That was an act of God,’ Trump official says

Authorities overseeing the search for flood victims in Texas said Monday that they will wait to address questions about weather warnings and why some summer camps did not evacuate ahead of the catastrophic flooding that killed nearly 90 people over the July Fourth weekend.

The officials spoke only hours after the operators of Camp Mystic, a century-old all-girls Christian summer camp in the Texas Hill Country, announced that they lost 27 campers and counselors to the floodwaters. Meanwhile, search-and-rescue teams carried on with the search for the dead, using heavy equipment to untangle trees and wading into swollen rivers.

Volunteers covered in mud sorted through chunks of debris, piece by piece, in an increasingly bleak task.

With additional rain on the way, more flooding still threatened in saturated parts of central Texas. Authorities said the death toll was sure to rise.

The announcement by Camp Mystic confirmed the worst fears after a wall of water slammed into cabins built along the edge of the Guadalupe River. The local sheriff later said that 10 girls and a counselor from the camp remained missing.

The raging flash floods — among the nation’s worst in decades — slammed into riverside camps and homes before daybreak Friday, pulling sleeping people out of their cabins, tents and trailers and dragging them for miles past floating tree trunks and automobiles. Some survivors were found clinging to trees.

Piles of twisted trees sprinkled with mattresses, refrigerators and coolers now litter the riverbanks. Caught in the debris were reminders of what drew so many to the campgrounds and cabins in the Hill Country — a volleyball, canoes and a family portrait.

In hard-hit Kerr County, home to Camp Mystic and several other summer camps, searchers have found the bodies of 75 people, including 27 children, Sheriff Larry Leitha said.

Fourteen other deaths were reported in Travis, Burnet, Kendall, Tom Green and Williamson counties, according to local officials.

Among those confirmed dead were 8-year-old sisters from Dallas who were at Camp Mystic and a former soccer coach and his wife who were staying at a riverfront home. Their daughters were still missing.

Calls for finding why warnings weren’t heard

Authorities vowed that one of the next steps would be investigating whether enough warnings were issued and why some camps did not evacuate or move to higher ground in a place long vulnerable to flooding that some local residents refer to as “flash flood alley.”

That will include a review of how weather warnings were sent out and received. One of the challenges is that many camps and cabins are in places with poor cellphone service, said Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice.

“We definitely want to dive in and look at all those things,” he said. “We’re looking forward to doing that once we can get the search and rescue complete.”

Some camps, though, were aware of the dangers and monitoring the weather. At least one moved several hundred campers to higher ground before the floods.

Sen. Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican, said recent government spending cuts to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service did not delay any warnings.

“There’s a time to have political fights, there’s a time to disagree. This is not that time,” Cruz said. “There will be a time to find out what could been done differently. My hope is in time we learn some lessons to implement the next time there is a flood.”

The weather service first advised of potential flooding on Thursday and then sent out a series of flash flood warnings in the early hours of Friday before issuing flash flood emergencies — a rare step that alerts the public to imminent danger.

Authorities and elected officials have said they did not expect such an intense downpour, the equivalent of months of rain. Some residents said they never received any warnings.

President Donald Trump, who signed a major disaster declaration for Kerr County and plans to visit the area, said Sunday that he does not plan to rehire any of the federal meteorologists who were fired this year.

“This was a thing that happened in seconds. Nobody expected it,” the president said.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said local and federal weather services provided sufficient warnings.

“That was an act of God. It’s not the administration’s fault that the flood hit when it did, but there were early and consistent warnings,” Leavitt said.

More than three dozen people were unaccounted for across the state and more could be missing, Gov. Greg Abbott said Sunday.

Search-and-rescue crews at one staging area said Monday that more than 1,000 volunteers had been directed to Kerr County.

Little time to escape floods

Reagan Brown said his parents, in their 80s, managed to escape uphill as water inundated their home in the town of Hunt. When the couple learned that their 92-year-old neighbor was trapped in her attic, they went back and rescued her.

“Then they were able to reach their tool shed up higher ground, and neighbors throughout the early morning began to show up at their tool shed, and they all rode it out together,” Brown said.

Elizabeth Lester, a mother of children who were at Camp Mystic and nearby Camp La Junta during the flood, said her young son had to swim out his cabin window to escape. Her daughter fled up the hillside as floodwaters whipped against her legs.

The truth about that big Social Security tax break everyone is talking about

After Congress passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump on July 4, the Social Security Administration sent out a statement saying that it “eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries.”

Trump has often promised “no tax on Social Security.”

But while the law does provide tax relief for seniors, it did not eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits for seniors.

Instead, it introduced a temporary tax deduction of $6,000 for those taxpayers age 65 and older. The deduction, effective 2025 to 2028, effectively reduces taxable income for taxpayers over 65.

The deduction applies to all income, not just Social Security benefits, and is available to those with a modified adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for single filers or $150,000 for married couples filing jointly. The tax break phases out completely at $175,000 for single filers and $250,000 for married filing jointly.

The White House Council of Economic Advisers calculated that the deduction would mean 88 percent of seniors, about 51.4 million people, will not pay taxes on their Social Security benefits, up from 64 percent under previous law, as their income exceeds taxable Social Security income.

About 7 million higher-income seniors will stay pay taxes on their benefits.

The claim that the Big Beautiful Bill eliminates taxes for most Social Security beneficiaries is potentially misleading. It’s the effect of a deduction, not the direct repeal of taxes on Social Security benefits.

The deduction doesn’t benefit lower-income seniors who already pay no taxes, those under 65 receiving disability or survivor benefits, or high earners above the thresholds of the deduction.

Available games at Rolla casino

Despite being a new online social casino, Rolla already boasts a game library spanning north of 1,600 different options. I will say, though, it entirely consists of slots, as there are no table games or live dealer options at the moment.

You will find, however, an array of slot titles from over two dozen different software developers, including:

  • Pragmatic Play
  • NetEnt
  • Habanero
  • Red Tiger
  • Big Time Gaming
  • BGaming
  • 3 Oaks

The variety of slots seem endless at Rolla. Categories include Jackpots, Hold and Spins, Hold and Wins, Megaways and, of course, classic slots.

Needless to say, if you are an avid slot player, then Rolla casino covers all of your needs. A cool feature that is rather unique is Rolla’s Random Game icon, which will pick a slot for you to play randomly.

Rolla casino user experience

Rolla is aiming to be a heavyweight within the industry, and its overall user experience speaks to that. The online social casino feels like a longstanding brand, despite being such a new entity.

For starters, the actual gameplay is top-notch. From my personal gaming, I didn’t experience any lagging or slow loading speeds while playing at home on my Wi-Fi. Moreover, finding your favorite games is easy as you can search by software provider and even by the game’s actual title using the search bar.

In addition to that, the UX is a bit confusing at first, but it’s phenomenal once you get used to it. I would estimate it took me roughly five minutes before I felt very comfortable navigating throughout the site.

Of course, aspects such as the very rewarding promotional offers only add to the great user experience at Rolla. The only thing missing is a dedicated mobile app, but the site is optimally designed for mobile browsers, too.

Another cool feature Rolla casino offers is its community chat, where you can interact with other players. It is something not seen at all online sweeps casinos.

Customer support at Rolla

Customer support is available 24/7 at Rolla casino, and it’s available in two ways:

When I tested the live chat function, I received an auto-generated answer instantly greeting me, which was then immediately followed by an answer to my inquiry. Overall, I found the live chat to be very efficient and helpful.

As for the email support, I again tested it firsthand, and Rolla passed with flying colors once more. An agent responded in what seemed like no time with a detailed answer to my question.

Rolla sweeps casino 3 main takeaways

Many features really caught my eye when examining all Rolla casino has to offer, but these three aspects stood out:

  • A standout welcome package: I have praised the Rolla Casino promo code offer throughout this page, and for good reason. The seven-day welcome pack that totals 1.75 million Gold Coins and 7 free Sweeps Coins towers over the sign up offers of most competitors. On top of that, new users can purchase 1.5 million GC and 30 free SC for just $9.99 instead of the standard $29.99.
  • Lots to like about the banking experience: Another glaring feature of Rolla is the lineup of banking options that can be used to make purchases and redemptions. Having the ability to make transactions via major debit cards, Skrill, online banking and numerous other methods make for a seamless experience. The 50 Sweeps Coins minimum redemption limit is also a nice feature.
  • Over 1,000 slots from the top providers: The game library that spans more than 1,600 slot titles is impressive, especially for an operator that is so new. Not only that, but the slots are powered by nearly 30 of the industry’s best and brightest software providers.
