Flood advisory issued for Lauderdale County until Monday evening

On Sunday at 3:14 p.m. a flood advisory was issued by the National Weather Service in effect until Monday at 6 p.m. for Lauderdale County.

The weather service describes, “Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is ongoing.”

“At 14.0 feet, Low-lying and agricultural areas along the river begin to be impacted, as well as Iron City Park and the Sycamore Campground,” states the weather service. “If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and find an alternative route. The next statement will be issued Monday morning at 9:15 a.m.”

Deciphering advisories, watches, and warnings: Understanding weather alerts

  • Flash flood warning: Take action!

A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. If you are in a flood-prone area, move immediately to high ground. A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain.

  • Flood warning: Take action!

A flood warning is declared when flooding is on the verge of happening or is already underway.

  • Flood advisory: Be aware:

A flood advisory is released when flooding is not expected to reach a severity level necessitating a warning. Nonetheless, it can still cause considerable inconvenience and, without exercising caution, potentially lead to situations that threaten life and/or property.

  • Flood watch: Be prepared:

A flood watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Staying safe during a flood: Recommendations from the weather service

Floods can pose a significant threat, especially if you live in a flood-prone area or find yourself camping in a low-lying region. To ensure your safety, the weather service offers essential flood safety guidelines:

Move to higher ground:

If you reside in a flood-prone region or are camping in low-lying terrain, the first step to safety is relocating to higher ground.

Adhere to evacuation orders:

When local authorities issue an evacuation order, promptly comply. Before leaving, secure your home by locking it.

Disconnect utilities and appliances:

If time permits, disconnect your utilities and appliances. This precaution minimizes electrical hazards during flooding.

Steer clear of flooded basements and submerged areas:

Avoid basements or rooms submerged in water with electrical outlets or cords. Preventing electrical accidents is crucial.

Evacuate promptly for safety:

If you notice sparks or hear buzzing, crackling, snapping, or popping sounds, evacuate without delay. Do not enter water that may carry an electrical charge.

Stay away from floodwaters:

Never attempt to walk through floodwaters. Even just 6 inches of swiftly moving water can forcefully knock you off your feet.

Seek higher ground when trapped:

Should you become trapped by moving water, reach the highest point possible and dial 911 to contact emergency services.

During periods of intense rainfall, the risk of flooding increases, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. It is imperative to avoid driving through any water on the road, even if it seems shallow. According to the weather service, most cars can be swept away by just 12 inches of rushing water. Prioritize your safety by staying informed and prepared.

Driving through downpours: Safety guidelines for wet roads

When heavy rain strikes, safety is paramount. Equip yourself with these guidelines from the weather service to navigate wet roads and avoid hazards:

Beware of rapid water flow:

Avoid parking or walking in close proximity to culverts or drainage ditches, as the swiftly moving water during heavy rain can potentially carry you away.

Maintain safe driving distances:

The two-second rule for following distance is your ally in heavy rain. Extend it to four seconds to ensure safe spacing in adverse conditions.

Slow down and drive with care:

On wet roads, reducing your speed is crucial. Ease off the gas pedal gradually and avoid abrupt braking to prevent skidding.

Choose your lane wisely:

Stick to the middle lanes on multi-lane roads to minimize the risk of hydroplaning, as water tends to accumulate in outer lanes.

Prioritize visibility:

Enhance your visibility in heavy rain by activating your headlights. Be particularly vigilant for vehicles in blind spots, as rain-smeared windows can obscure them.

Watch out for slippery roads:

The initial half-hour of rain is when roads are slickest due to a mixture of rain, grime, and oil. Exercise heightened caution during this period.

Keep a safe distance from large vehicles:

Don’t follow large trucks or buses too closely. The spray created by their large tires reduces your vision. Take care when passing them as well; if you must pass, do so quickly and safely.

Mind your windshield wipers:

  • Overloaded wiper blades can hinder visibility. If rain severely limits your sight, pull over and wait for conditions to improve. Seek refuge at rest areas or protected spots.
  • If the roadside is your only option, pull off as far as possible, preferably past the end of a guard rail, and wait until the storm passes. Keep your headlights on and turn on emergency flashers to alert other drivers of your position.

By following these safety measures, you can significantly reduce risks and ensure your well-being when heavy rain pours down. Stay informed about weather conditions and heed advice from local authorities to make your journey safe and sound.

Advance Local Weather Alerts is a service provided by United Robots, which uses machine learning to compile the latest data from the National Weather Service.

Director who led Marshall Space Flight Center during Challenger disaster dead at 102

William R. Lucas, who directed the Marshall Space Flight Center from a crucial time of expansion into one of its darkest hours, died Feb. 10, 2025, at his home in Huntsville. He was 102.

Lucas served as the fourth director of the Huntsville-based space flight center, from June 1974 to July 1986. According to his biography on the NASA website, Lucas “was instrumental in bringing to Marshall a significant share of the nation’s major space programs.”

Marshall Space Flight Center also came to control three of the primary elements of the space shuttle: the main engines on the orbiter, the twin solid rocket boosters and the external fuel tank. Those elements — and the climate at Marshall under Lucas’ direction — came under intense scrutiny when the space shuttle orbiter Challenger exploded Jan. 28, 1986, shortly after launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

President Ronald Reagan immediately appointed a commission to investigate and report on the circumstances that led up to the loss of the Challenger. The Rogers Commission report of June 6, 1986, faulted both NASA as a whole and the Marshall Space Flight Center, as well as contractor Morton Thiokol Inc., over lapses in engineering and management.

Regarding MSFC, the commission’s report noted, “a tendency at Marshall to management isolation,” which allowed program managers to “fail to provide full and timely information bearing on the safety of [the Challenger] flight to other vital elements of Shuttle program management.”

Lucas retired in the face of criticism the following month.

Born March 1, 1922, in Newbern, Dyer County, Tenn., Lucas enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served as a supply corps officer in the U.S., the Caribbean and the Pacific theater during World War II. He was discharged from active duty in 1946 and served in the Naval Reserves. He earned a doctoral degree in chemistry and metallurgy from Vanderbilt University in 1952 and began his career at Redstone Arsenal in the Guided Missile Development Division under the direction of Wernher von Braun.

Earlier in his NASA career, Lucas helped design the passive thermal control system for the first U.S. satellite, Explorer I, which was launched by a Huntsville team using a Jupiter rocket in 1958, according to his NASA biography. And as director of Marshall’s Propulsion and Vehicle Engineering Laboratory, he led the development of the Saturn V launch vehicle’s propulsion system.

Lucas’ honors included election to the National Academy of Engineering and the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame; the 2009 Wernher von Braun Space Flight Trophy from the National Space Club for his distinguished career in rocketry and science; a NASA exceptional service medal for his contributions to the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission and a NASA distinguished service medal, “for an exceptional career of dedicated public service,” according to his obituary.

Lucas was a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics, the American Society of Metals, and the American Astronomical Society; and a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Sigma Xi, and Tau Beta Pi.

Lucas’ wife of 69 years, Polly Jean Torti Lucas; a son, William Ray Lucas Jr.; and his sister, Sue Lucas Moore, predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Lucas Watts, and son Michael Lee Lucas, along with six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held March 1 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Huntsville, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. A private family graveside service will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Will snow fall on Alabama? What to expect from this week’s weather forecast

Winter will return to Alabama this week, and it could bring a few snowflakes along with it.

The National Weather Service is warning that some icy travel could be possible in parts of north and north-central Alabama on Tuesday night through early Thursday as cold temperatures take hold across the state.

The weather service expects what is called a “clipper” system to move through from Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing increased chances for light precipitation to Alabama.

It is expected to be cold enough across north Alabama to generate some snow. However, most of the rest of the state will get only a cold rain.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville said parts of northwest Alabama could get an inch of snow or more from Tuesday night into Wednesday, with lesser amounts expected for areas to the south and east.

The weather service in Birmingham said mostly showers are expected for central Alabama but there will be a small window for snow mixing with rain or switching over to all snow for the northern part of the region early Wednesday morning.

Forecasters said those areas could see slick spots on the roads:

How many tornadoes hit Alabama overnight? Storm surveys ongoing

The National Weather Service is surveying damage across Alabama after a round of mostly overnight severe storms.

Those storms had moved out of Alabama as of Sunday morning, and no additional severe weather is expected today.

The overnight storms prompted numerous tornado warnings but also left widespread swaths of downed trees and power lines thanks to high wind gusts.

The weather service in Huntsville said storm surveys are planned for areas near Russellville, Tuscumbia, Rogersville and Boaz. Multiple damage reports came from those areas late Saturday.

The weather service in Birmingham sent a storm survey team to southern Hale and Perry counties on Sunday to look at storm damage there after a tornado-warned storm moved through that area overnight.

The weather service also wants to look at damage in Montgomery, Macon, Elmore and Tallapoosa counties, but there was no timetable for those surveys.

South Alabama escaped most of the tornado-warned storms, but the weather service offices in both Mobile and Tallahassee, Fla., have received numerous reports of downed trees and power lines.

More than 110,000 power outages were still being reported in Alabama alone just before 10 a.m. on Sunday, according to PowerOutage.us.

The weather service survey teams will look at storm damage and determine if it was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds. If a tornado is confirmed it will be given a preliminary rating using the Enhanced Fujita scale, which ranges from EF-0 to EF-5.

Officials asked those across Alabama to let the weather service know if they have storm damage.

The weather service plans to release more information on what the survey teams find later today.
