New Jersey teachers under fire for wearing ‘Gulf of America’ shirts to school

A small group of teachers wearing “Gulf of America” T-shirts to school has stirred controversy in their New Jersey district over whether it was unwelcome political statement.

The shirts were worn during a dress-down day Jan. 31 at Belleville High School.

The T-shirts apparently referenced an executive order from President Donald Trump to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America. Some say the move has caused tension with the largely Latino school community.

Another teacher at Belleville High School took to social media to denounce what she called an attempt to bully Latino students who fear Trump’s threatened Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids.

“Our student body has been suffering, crying, coming into school, emails from kids saying their parents are not letting come back for fear that they get picked up by ICE raids,” the Belleville teacher said in the post. “Our job is to support these kids and reassure them the school is safe place and to come here. I feel as if those t-shirts at Belleville High School are sending a clear-cut message to these kids in order to intimidate them and to bully them.”

School board President Gabrielle Bennett-Meany declined comment and referred all inquiries to school Superintendent Nick Perrapato, who did not respond to repeated requests for an interview.

On Tuesday, Perrapato sent a letter to parents, staff and the school community in which he acknowledged “a recent situation that has caused concern within our school community,” and said the matter was being addressed “internally.”

“Last week, a small group of staff members wore coordinated clothing that some students and staff found offensive,” Perrapato wrote in the letter obtained by NJ Advance Media. “We understand this has impacted members of our community in different ways, and we take these concerns seriously.”

Perrapato declined to provide specifics, citing it as a personnel matter, but stated that it would be addressed according to district policies and procedures.

Belleville High School is 73% Hispanic, according to the latest state Department of Education data.

“We recognize that political discourse can be especially charged, and we encourage thoughtful actions and respectful conversations among our students and staff,” Perrapato wrote, adding that school counselors would be available for any student in need of support. “We are committed to working together to ensure that our schools remain a positive learning environment.”

Belleville school board policy generally prohibits teachers and staff from engaging in political activity on school grounds.

The policy states teachers and staff can’t distribute political circulars or petitions on school grounds, but it doesn’t expressly forbid clothing with political slogans.

The policy also protects freedom of speech.

“Nothing in this Policy shall be interpreted to impose a burden on the constitutionally protected speech or conduct of a teaching staff member or a student,” it says.

The teacher who posted on social media did not respond to a request for an interview. But in her post, she said a history teacher has two jobs: to convey the facts, and to protect the children emotionally and physically.

Alabama woman fatally mauled by pack of dogs while feeding them, authorities say

A 46-year-old woman died Thursday when she mauled by a pack of dogs at a Tuscaloosa County home.

Tuscaloosa County sheriff’s deputies, NorthStar EMS, Echola Volunteer Fire Department and animal control officers were dispatched at 9 a.m. Thursday to a medical call in the 13000 block of Boyd Road.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy said the 911 caller reported that a woman was under attack by the dog pack.

Deputies arrived and attempted lifesaving measures, but the victim did not survive.

The attack happened in the yard and on the property of the dogs’ owners. The victim had gone to the residence to feed the dogs for the owner, who was out of town.

Out of respect for the victim’s family, Kennedy said, no additional information about the woman will be released.

Kenned said no criminal charges are expected.

How Scott Cochran became head coach for West Alabama football

Scott Cochran had the coaching itch. As the 2024 season came to an end, the longtime Alabama football strength and conditioning coach, Nick Saban’s right-hand man, knew he wanted to get back in the game.

The calls began coming in, most of them for strength or special teams jobs, just like he’d held for most of his career in college football.

“It was all assistant calls,” Cochran said Friday in Livingston, shortly after West Alabama introduced him as its new head coach. “And I had no idea, I had no idea that this would be an option.”

The Division II Tigers needed a new head coach. Brett Gilliland, who had held the job for 11 seasons, was moving upstairs as athletics director.

Gilliland and UWA were searching for his replacement. Through back channels, they got the idea that Cochran might be interested.

The two coaches didn’t know each other personally, but Cochran’s reputation preceded him.

“Obviously knew how well he can motivate players,” Gilliland said. “And the energy he brings. All you’ve got to do is watch anything that he’s been a part of.”

Cochran arrived at Alabama in 2007, as part of Saban’s first staff. He won five national championships in Tuscaloosa, before leaving in 2020 for a special teams coordinator job at Georgia under Kirby Smart.

He battled addiction problems throughout his career, and resigned from Georgia after a relapse. Since then, he’s been running a non-profit to promote addiction recovery, something he’ll continue while at UWA.

“It was a group effort,” West Alabama president Todd Fritch said. “It’s just a tremendous opportunity that we became aware of. Reached out to coach and said ‘Hey, we’ve got an opportunity here.’”

Cochran has never coached at the Division II level before. It’s a different game than the one he left in the SEC.

But for the longtime assistant, it was a chance to return to what he loved about coaching in the first place.

“I think going through what I went through, I realized that I kind of got back to the pure of, I didn’t get into coaching for financials” Cochran said. “I didn’t get into it for the money. I didn’t. I mean, I didn’t make any money at the beginning. So taking a year to reassess my life made me realize it’s not about that. That what I need to focus on is the people around me.”

After arriving in Livingston, Cochran met with the Tigers, who finished the 2024 season 9-2. He then spoke with every player individually in his office.

On Tuesday, UWA will begin his famed fourth quarter program. After the team meeting, linebacker Travon Nunn went to YouTube to find videos of his new coach in action.

“I saw ‘YEAHHHHH,’” Nunn said. “He’s very much energy. But we love it though. That’s what we need. We love the energy.”

Auburn Board of Trustees approve $9 million renovations to Neville Arena

The Auburn board voted to continue plans to build a new basketball practice facility, with a proposed $9 million renovation to Neville Arena Friday morning.

The Auburn BOT previously approved a project to build a new basketball practice facility in 2022. However, NIL took priority over other issues pushing the project back for Auburn athletics.

The state-of-the-art facility “will renovate 22,500 square feet within the arena providing enhancements to the existing practice gym, scholarship lobby upgrades, and relocated and enlarged team meeting and office spaces within the men’s and women’s basketball suites,” according to the materials.

Neville Arena is used by Auburn’s men’s basketball, women’s basketball, gymnastics and volleyball teams, and both the men’s and women’s basketball teams share the practice gym.

The BOT also voted on the second approval on an architect and construction manager for a multi-use facility in the Jordan-Hare Stadium north end zone.

Teen shot during Birmingham shootout now charged with murder

An 18-year-old is charged in a Birmingham exchange of gunfire that left one man dead and the suspect himself injured.

David Hunter is charged with murder in the Monday slaying of 42-year-old Christon Deandre Thorn.

Hunter remains hospitalized at UAB.

The exchange of gunfire is believed to have started with a domestic argument between Thorn and his girlfriend. It escalated into an exchange of gunfire Hunter, police said.

The shooting happened at 4:35 p.m. in the 1500 block of 52nd Street in Ensley in the Central Park neighborhood.

“Officers were on the scene within seconds,’’ said Officer Truman Fitzgerald. “We had some officers nearby.”

Alabama deputy who died 8 years after he was shot to be honored as a line of duty casualty

Former Lauderdale County Deputy John Randall McCrary, who died last February from injuries he received on the job, will be honored May 11 by having his name placed on the National Law Enforcement Monument in Washington D.C. during National Police Week.

McCrary’s death has been attributed to long-lasting complications from gunshot wounds he received while serving commitment papers on February 3, 2016, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

When McCrary and two other deputies arrived at the home in Florence, the subject barricaded himself in a bedroom, the release says.

When the deputies entered the room, the subject fired at the deputies, striking McCrary twice.

McCrary was able to return fire, wounding the subject.

Following the incident, the deputy was transported to Huntsville Hospital to have his spleen was removed.

“He suffered medical difficulties throughout the next eight years and passed away from complications of his gunshot wounds on February 28, 2024,” the release reads.

After serving with the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office, McCrary served with the Rogersville Police Department and was promoted to the rank of Investigator.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, three sisters, and two grandchildren.

The suspect who shot McCrary was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 99 years in prison. He will be eligible for parole in 2033, according to the release.

Expert Super Bowl 59 player prop picks: Our best bets for Jalen Hurts and DeVonta Smith

A pair of former Alabama Crimson Tide teammates, Jalen Hurts and DeVonta Smith, will get their second chance to win a ring in Super Bowl 59. The Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of Super Bowl 57.

In their previous Super Bowl meeting, Hurts passed for 304 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for three touchdowns and 70 yards.

Smith caught seven passes for 100 yards. The Eagles wide receiver can become just the fourth player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, national championship and Super Bowl with a win over Kansas City.

We pinpoint the best Super Bowl 59 prop bets on DraftKings Sportsbook for the two Alabama alumni as they aim to interrupt the Kansas City dynasty. You can also view the latest Super Bowl betting trends here.

Jalen Hurts prop pick

Anytime TD Scorer

Best odds: -110 at DraftKings Sportsbook ($100 bet wins $90.91)

This is a good route to go for winning over 90 dollars. Only Saquon Barkley has better Anytime TD Odds than the king of the most unstoppable play in the NFL, the “Tush Push.” Not even the mighty Chiefs may be able to fully keep Hurts out of the end zone.

In Super Bowl 57, Hurts rushed for TDs of one, two and four yards. In the NFC Championship Game this season, he got into the end zone three times.

Kansas City is the best defense that the Eagles will face in the playoffs. The Chiefs held Josh Allen out of the end zone, but did allow two rushing touchdowns to James Cook, one of which was from a yard out.

The Chiefs have allowed 25-plus points in their last two playoff games, so Philadelphia will certainly get into position for some potential rushing touchdowns. With all the attention focused on Barkley, Hurts might be able to score from a bit further out than the immediate goal line area.

Kansas City will be heavily focused on limiting Barkley, and Hurts may elect to open up the passing game early. Consider taking Hurts at Over 212.5 passing yards at -110. One of the interesting DraftKings Specials is for the Philly QB to pass for Over 25 yards in each quarter at +155.

DeVonta Smith player prop pick

Over 4.5 Receptions

Best odds: -111 at DraftKings Sportsbook ($100 bet wins $90.09)

Smith should be able to get past this projected reception total because he can benefit from the defensive attention commanded by Barkley and A.J. Brown. The former Crimson Tide standout is essentially the third playmaking option on offense for the Eagles.

The top priority for the Kansas City defense will be to contain Barkley. In the passing game, top cornerback Trent McDuffie should draw A.J. Brown in coverage often. Smith might face Jaylen Watson a lot, and he is a good CB too, but any double-teaming will focus more on Brown.

Smith should be able win enough against Watson to help you cash this prop. Watson ranked 21st out of 116 CBs on Pro Football Focus this season. McDuffie was fifth, so Smith is drawing the better matchup.

If the Eagles’ WR does get matched up against nickel CB Chamarri Conner, though, he could bust loose for a big play. Conner is ranked 51st by PFF and has been the unit’s weak link in the postseason. Smith’s longest reception prop is Over 20.5 Yards at -125.

Smith’s Over/Under for yards is 51.5 at -112, and that is not a high number to clear, although he has not done so in two of three playoff games. He has also caught four passes in each postseason outing, too.

But I am recommending the Over on both props because Hurts will have to utilize Smith often enough when the defense is geared to mainly stop Barkley and Brown.

Man accused of beating his ex-girlfriend to death: Killing adds to Birmingham’s record 2024 homicide total

A 63-year-old Birmingham man has been charged in the 2024 beating death of his ex-girlfriend.

Police on Friday announced the murder charge against Roosevelt Smith.

The investigation began June 29, 2024.

It was about 12:40 a.m. that Saturday when police officers found 51-year-old Keysha Lashon Fikes badly beaten in the 900 block of 46th Street North.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service rushed to her UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

That same day, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said, Smith was arrested on a domestic violence charge.

Fikes remained at UAB Hospital through September. Once she began to improve, she was transferred to a rehabilitation facility.

However, her condition again deteriorated, and she was moved back to UAB Hospital in October.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital on Nov. 26.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office this week ruled her death a blunt force trauma homicide.

Her death means there were 152 homicides in 2024, instead of the previously reported 151. Last year was the deadliest year in Birmingham’s history.

The charge against Smith was increased to murder on Tuesday.

Smith was booked into the Jefferson County Jail early Thursday afternoon. He is being held without bond.

Megachurch pastor accused of trying to sexually assault brother of minister he is suing

The brother of a former minister who has accused Bishop T.D. Jakes of sexual misconduct has filed a sworn affidavit in court alleging the Dallas megachurch pastor tried to sexually assault him.

The affidavit is signed by Georgia minister Richard Youngblood, 62, the brother of Duane Youngblood, whom Jakes is suing for defamation.

The affidavit is part of a 167-page motion filed last month in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania that seeks to dismiss Jakes’ defamation lawsuit.

Duane Youngblood alleged last year in a YouTube talk show that Jakes groomed and attempted to sexually assault him years ago. Jakes is senior pastor of The Potter’s House, which says on its website that it has 30,000 members.

“Duane Youngblood’s brother’s allegations are absolutely false,” Dustin Pusch, a lawyer for Jakes, wrote in a Feb. 5 email to The Dallas Morning News.

“The Court has set a response deadline of February 14, on which we will file a robust and thorough response to these latest versions of Mr. Youngblood’s meritless claims, and will continue to hold him accountable for the harm his knowingly false accusations have caused,” Pusch said.

Tyrone Blackburn, a lawyer for Duane Youngblood, said in a Jan. 31 email: “The Youngblood Brothers have been in religious systems that did not encourage speaking out against perceived authorities.”

Richard Youngblood founded The Latter House in Atlanta, according to his X. He alleges in his sworn affidavit that he watched Jakes preach in Pennsylvania when he was a young minister, and later moved to West Virginia to “sit under [Jakes’] tutelage.”

He said he was Jakes’ “armorbearer,” which included driving the Dallas pastor to events. On one occasion in the late 1980s, Richard Youngblood alleged in the affidavit that he and Jakes shared a hotel room while traveling together, and Jakes climbed into his bed and tried to kiss him.

Jakes sued Richard Youngblood’s brother, Duane Youngblood, for defamation in a Pennsylvania district court on Nov. 25.

Jakes’ lawsuit said Duane Youngblood is a registered sex offender. According to the Pennsylvania sex offender registry, he was convicted of sexual assault of a minor in 2008 and of corruption of minors in 2014.

Duane Youngblood attached a sworn affidavit to the motion to dismiss filed last month. In that affidavit, he alleges he has experienced multiple instances of sexual abuse, beginning when he was 9.

Duane Youngblood says he met Jakes during one of the megachurch pastor’s visits to Pittsburgh. He alleges in the affidavit that he drove Jakes back to his lodging and that he and Jakes had a “deep, emotional conversation that brought me to tears.” He alleges Jakes tried to kiss him, and later told Youngblood he wanted to have a sexual relationship with him.

On the talk show Larry Reid Live, Duane Youngblood indicated these events occurred when he was in his late teens.

Jakes’ suit said Duane Youngblood, through his lawyer, asked the pastor for $6 million in a letter dated Nov. 15 to “resolve this matter quickly and privately” shortly after Duane Youngblood alleged on Larry Reid Live that Jakes attempted to assault him.

“The underlying story in this case depicts a carefully planned effort by a convicted criminal, and those acting in concert with him, to rewrite history in order to deflect blame and accountability for his own reprehensible and criminal conduct and to publicly smear a renowned and eminently respected religious leader in a blatant and explicit attempt to extort him for millions of dollars,” according to Jakes’ lawsuit.

Blackburn shared with The News a copy of the letter he said he sent Jakes’ legal team. “The letter, dated November 15, 2024, was a pre-litigation settlement demand sent to Bishop Jakes on behalf of Duane Youngblood,” Blackburn wrote in a Feb. 5 email to The News. He described the $6 million amount as a “starting figure in negotiations.”

“Demand letters are a standard legal tool used to present claims and seek resolution outside of court. The intent of the letter was to propose a settlement, not to coerce or improperly pressure Bishop Jakes,” Blackburn said.

Blackburn’s January court motion includes sworn affidavits from five people, in addition to Richard Youngblood, who allege Duane Youngblood had previously described to them Jakes’ alleged unwanted sexual advances.

In a Jan. 31 email, Blackburn shared more information about the identity of the people who signed the affidavits. He said the five people include a school friend who knew Duane Youngblood since 1984; a former roommate who lived with Duane in high school and college; Duane’s wife since 1989; a friend of Duane and his wife’s for over 10 years; and a family friend for over 30 years.

How a cow named ‘Biscuit’ became an Alabama community’s beloved escape artist

When you hear ‘Free Biscuit,’ your initial thought might be a breakfast special at Jack’s or Hardee’s, not a runaway bovine.

But over 400 Alabamians would tell you differently as of this week.

At the beginning of this month, Biscuit’s owner created a Facebook page ‘Free Biscuit Of Monrovia,’ to detail the beloved cow’s adventures, which often take him outside of the confines of his fence.

In a short time, the page has gained hundreds of followers, with each post getting dozens of views and responses.

“Due to popular demand, I have started a Free Biscuit FB page,” the first post reads.

“I love all of your ideas about t shirts and short story of his adventures.”

Due to his golden color, some may assume that Biscuit was named for the Alabama breakfast staple.

But his name is actually short for Hibiscus, following the floral name theme he shares with his mother and the rest of his siblings, according to the owner.

Since Feb. 1, Biscuit has made two escapes, the most recent one happening this morning, but has been returned home safely by his owner both times, according to the page.

Commentors shared their theories on why Biscuit leaves home so often.

“Maybe the grass is greener on the other side,” one wrote.

“Is he just smarter than the average cow? How is it none of the others have figured out how to get out yet?” said another.

Biscuit’s owner has her own ideas about his rebellion.

“He must be a teenager!” she commented. “He is pushing ALL my buttons.”
