‘Boy Meets World’ alum updates cancer battle: ‘Hurts to be awake’

Danielle Fishel shared she is “officially done” with her breast cancer treatments, but the “Boy Meets World” alum is dealing with the painful impact of 20 rounds of radiation.

“I just wanted to give everyone an update because I’ve kept you guys all abreast,” Fishel said on the Jan. 13 episode of “Pod Meets World,” per PEOPLE.

“I am officially done with radiation.

The 43-year-old, however, laid out the issues she is still dealing with.

“I did 15 rounds of whole breast radiation and then five rounds of targeted radiation, which just means they focus in on the very small area where my cancer was versus treating the entire breast,” she said. “It will help significantly lower my chances of recurrence, which is always good news, but, boy, I am feeling the effects … Physically, I have a very bad sunburn. I also have a rash on top of the sunburn, which is just great,” she added sarcastically.

“It’s very itchy, and, also, you can’t itch it, because if you even come close to touching it, you wanna cry.”

She added it “hurts to be awake.”

Jon Stewart slams Tuberville’s ‘psychotic’ California wildfire comments: ‘There’s something wrong with you’

Daily Show host Jon Stewart said that Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s, R-Ala, comments that California did not deserve aid to assist with the Los Angeles wildfires were “psychotic.

On Monday, Tuberville told Newsmax that other states should not be bailing out California as the crisis is the result of voters choosing to elect “imbeciles”

Tuberville stated he was fine with sending some federal assistance if California abided by certain conditions.

“I don’t mind sending them some money, but unless they show that they’re gonna change their ways and get back to building dams and stormwater, doing the maintenance with the brush and the trees – everything that everybody else does in the country, and they refuse to do it – they don’t deserve anything, to be honest with you, unless they show us they’re gonna make some changes,” he said.

During a segment on The Daily Show Monday, Stewart expressed anger at Tuberville and other Republicans that are trying to attach their, “I told you so’s as a condition of funding California’s disaster relief.”

Stewart responded to a clip of Tuberville’s Newsmax interview saying that the senator’s comments were “psychotic” and that despite Alabama’s horrible educational benchmarks aid would never be conditioned for disaster relief.

“Really senator from Alabama?” Stewart said.

“The state near the bottom in math, reading and test scores. Next time you get hit by a f****ng hurricane, why don’t we have a little parent teacher conference to see that if you got your scores up, you would get the money, or actually, let’s not do it, because you’ll get the money anyway, because we’re not f****ng psychos. That is psychotic. There’s something wrong with you.”

Stewart went on to list other Republican lawmakers making similar statements.

“Red states are always the tragic victims of circumstances outside of their control, and Democrats always vote for their aid,” Stewart said. “Whereas blue state disasters are a function of their flawed morality and policy. And if we help blue state survivors, what message will that send? What lesson will they learn?”

According to the Associated Press, 24 people have died and thousands of homes have been lost as a result of the Los Angeles wildfires

Iconic Alabama musician releasing first acoustic album: Hear a song

For his ninth proper studio album, Jason Isbell is doing something different. The six-time Grammy winner will release his first ever solo acoustic album, “Foxes In The Snow,” March 7.

Isbell, a folk/rock singer, songwriter and guitarist and Alabama native, has released the song “Bury Me” as an advance single from the album. The 45-year-old Isbell is known for his stirring lyrics, nimble guitar-playing and strong singing. A stripped down recording, as heard on “Bury Me,” makes those talents even more vivid.

“Foxes In The Snow” is the first album credited solely to “Jason Isbell” and not “Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit” in 10 years. The last solo effort being 2015′s “Something More Than Free.” Fans can preorder/pre-save “Foxes In The Snow” at orcd.co/ji-fits.

Other song titles on the 11-track album: “Ride to Robert’s,” “Eileen,” “Gravelweed,” “Don’t Be Tough,” “Open and Close,” “Foxes in the Snow,” “Crimson and Clay,” “Good While It Lasted,” “True Believer,” and “Wind Behind the Rain.”

The album cover art is by Isbell’s girlfriend, 30-year-old painter Anna Weyant. Isbell and musician Amanda Shires, his second wife, divorced in 2024.

He’s had plenty of other life experiences to draw from since his previous album, 2023′s Grammy-winning “Weathervanes.” Isbell, who grew up in Green Hill and Muscle Shoals, performed his song“Something More Than Free” at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. In fall 2023, Isbell made his first notable appearance in a film, in director Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” adaptation.

A longtime Nashville resident, Isbell will embark on a solo acoustic tour Feb. 2 in Berlin. He’ll reunite with longtime backing band The 400 Unit for a home-state show June 28 at Birmingham’s new Coca-Cola Amphitheater.

Alabama native installed as president of nation’s largest Black denomination

The Rev. Boise Kimber, an Alabama native, was installed as the president of the nation’s largest Black denomination on Monday night in a service at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham.

Kimber was elected to a five-year term as president of the 7.5-million-member National Baptist Convention USA on Sept. 5 in Baltimore. He has been senior pastor of First Calvary Baptist Church in New Haven, Conn., since 1986.

Kimber, 65, grew up in Phenix City and started preaching at a church in Opelika when he was 15, in 1974.

“My mother was one of the singers at the church and my father was one of the deacons,” Kimber said in an interview before his installation. “We were always brought up in the church. As a young lad, I went to school. I played football. Other than that, I was at church.”

The National Baptist Convention USA is in Birmingham this week for its mid-winter board meeting, through Thursday at the BJCC. “We had a board meeting today with about 1,000 people at our board meeting,” Kimber said Monday. “We were able to move some things.”

Kimber said he wants to set a focus on missions and evangelism. “Mission and evangelism to me equals Christian education,” Kimber said. “We want to move back to what our mothers and fathers started this convention on. They started this convention also on social justice. I’m a lover of social justice. We will use this platform for Christian education and for social justice.”

The only Macy’s in Alabama is remaining open – for now

Alabama’s sole remaining Macy’s store is still open, after having avoided the latest round of store closings by the venerable retail chain.

Last week, Macy’s announced another 66 stores would be shuttered as part of its “Bold New Chapter” strategy, which was announced last February.

The Birmingham location, in the Riverchase Galleria, was not among them – despite the fact that the store space has been for sale as a “Big Box opportunity” with SRS Real Estate Partners since last August.

The company’s “Bold New Chapter” plan was formulated to return the company to profitable sales growth by measures that included closing about 150 underproductive stores over a three-year period, while investing in 350 Macy’s locations through fiscal 2026.

In a news release, the company said “Macy’s enters 2025 well-positioned to build momentum with a stronger store fleet and remains focused on bringing this enhanced customer experience to more locations nationwide and through its digital channels.”

Macy’s is among a growing list of companies that have struggled with keeping stores open among increasing retail competition.

After 48 years of business, Macy’s closed its other Birmingham store, at Brookwood Village, in 2022.
