2025 can’t get here soon enough for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Thanks to a slow start, a deluge of rain and a comedy of errors, Kalen DeBoer’s team started the game in reverse and trailing Michigan 16-0 in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa.
The first-quarter numbers were as baffling as anything we’ve seen in college football this season. That’s saying something in the age of NIL, the transfer portal and an expanded CFP.
The Tide trailed after the first quarter 16-0, but that wasn’t the worst of it.
Alabama ran 15 plays for -2 yards. Three fumbles. Two were lost. An interception was added to the mix. Jalen Milroe had three turnovers alone.
Quite the statement from a team many felt should have been included in the CFP.
Social media certainly had something to say about the abysmal start for the Tide.

Supporters of President-Elect Donald Trump have been waging a public battle in recent days over an immigration policy that many large Alabama companies use to draw skilled foreign workers.
The H-1B Visa program allows American employers to temporarily hire non-citizens for high-skill, specialty jobs. The visa can cover everything from Department of Defense researchers to fashion models. Employers are supposed to use it if they can’t find American citizens to do a job.
Amazon was the largest beneficiary of the program this fiscal year, with 3,871 new H-1B employees, according to the National Foundation for American Policy. Google, Meta, Apple and IBM were all among the top 10 employers.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services says H-1B applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in the occupation they’re filling. Once someone gets a visa, they can get up to six years on the job.
According to The Washington Post, immigration officials issue 85,000 H-1B visas each year — 65,000 to first-time applicants and another 20,000 to those graduating with a master’s degree or doctorate from a U.S. college or university.
The controversy came following comments by high-profile Trump supporters, such as Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who say the visa program allows tech companies to gain necessary expertise from foreign workers. They were responding to Trump supporters such as Laura Loomer and Steve Bannon, who say the program allows companies to exploit foreign labor while denying Americans good paying jobs.
Trump himself told The New York Post he supports the program, though he has been critical of it and restricted foreign worker visas during the first term in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program,” he said. According to The New York Times, Trump spoke out against the program while campaigning in 2016, calling it “very bad for workers” and stating that “we should end it.”
The H1-B program is different than H2B visas, for unskilled labor, or H2A visas, for agricultural workers.
Alabama H-1B employers
The largest employer by far using workers under the H-1B visa program this year in Alabama is the University of Alabama at Birmingham. As of the end of September, UAB had 181 approved workers.
And according to myvisajobs.com, a clearinghouse for job openings and applicants, the school has 296 Labor Condition Applications filed. An LCA is a document that a prospective employer files with the U.S. Labor Department’s Employment and Training Administration when it seeks to employ non-immigrant workers at a specific job.
The average salary of those job offers at UAB is $110,678.
Auburn University has 76 visa beneficiaries approved, followed by Shipt with 63, and the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation with 60. The University of Alabama has 51, the same number as VT Mobile Aerospace Engineering.
Notably, Huntsville’s health care authority, which has 15 applications filed with the program, offers the highest average salary of every company in the top 10, with 15 positions averaging $282,120.
Reed has represented District 5 since 2010. The district includes portions of Fayette, Jefferson, Lamar, Tuscaloosa and Walker counties.
Ivey set the special primary election for March 11. A runoff, if necessary, will be April 8. The special general election for the district will be June 24.
“Senator Reed has been an outstanding partner as president pro tem of the Senate and will continue to be an integral leader in the state of Alabama, but he has left big shoes to fill in the state legislature,” Ivey said in a news release. “Greg has effectively represented his district and I encourage the folks in Senate District Five to get out and vote during this special election.”
The deadline for qualifying with major political parties will be Jan. 7 at 5 p.m.
The deadline for all independent candidates and/or minor parties is March 11.
Alabama football looks to score a victory over Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl to end the 2024 season.
The Crimson Tide faced the Wolverines the first day of the calendar year in the Rose Bowl as part of the College Football Playoff. Now, Alabama closes the year with another matchup against Michigan, but there’s no spot in the national championship game at stake.
The coaches are also different. A season ago, Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh faced off in the Rose Bowl. This season, Kalen DeBoer and Sherrone Moore coach against each other in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
Alabama aims to extend its streak to 17 seasons with 10 or more wins. The Crimson Tide enters the matchup at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa 9-

The body of a missing Alabama toddler was put into a bag and placed in an outdoor storage shed before being moved to a still-unknown location, according to court documents made public Tuesday.
Kahleb Collins was discovered to be missing after a crash killed his father and sister and critically injured his mother, who is now jailed in connection to his and his sister’s deaths.
Authorities have not said how the 1-year-old died, and his remains have not yet been found.
His mother, Wendy “Pam” Bailey, 22, is charged with abuse of corpse, a Class C felony, aggravated child abuse, a Class A Felony, first-degree domestic violence, a Class A felony, and criminally negligent homicide, a Class A misdemeanor, 24th Judicial Circuit District Attorney Andy Hamlin announced Monday.
The criminally negligent homicide charge is for the death of 2-year-old Ryleigh Collins.
The girl was killed in the horrific Dec. 8 crash that also killed 40-year-old Steven Bradley “Brad” Collins, who was Bailey’s husband and the father of Ryleigh and Kahleb.
The investigation showed Ryleigh was unrestrained when the fatal crash happened that Sunday morning.

The rest of the charges are linked to the presumed death of Kahleb.
Charging documents against Bailey said, “after Kahleb died, his body was placed into a bag and stored in an outside storage building for a brief period prior to final disposal at an unknown location.”
On the aggravated child abuse and domestic violence charges, the criminal complaint states that some time in July, Bailey blatantly, and on more than two occasions, failed to report or intervene during known physical abuse.
In one instance, records state, Bailey received a message from Collins saying that he was going to kill Kahleb.
That message was followed by photographs of Kahleb “hanging from a loft with a rope with blood present on his body,’ and of him lying bruised and face up on the floor.
The photos, according to court documents were followed by another message from Collins that read, “He want (sic) move. I’m so sorry.”
Collins then sent another message that read, “He moving.”
Bailey acknowledged the photos and replied, “He just looks wore out and tire (sic) and hurt hopefully that’s all.”
“Wendy Bailey failed to intervene or notify law enforcement after she was made aware of the extreme circumstances and assault that had occurred to Kahleb Collins,’’ the documents state.

Investigators with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the 24th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office interviewed Bailey several times while she was hospitalized at UAB in Birmingham.
On Monday, the arrest warrants against Bailey were served. Bailey was released from UAB Hospital and booked into the Fayette County Jail.
Prosecutors are asking that she be held without bond under Aniah’s Law.
“This investigation has been particularly challenging as it involved the tragic deaths of two young children,’’ District Attorney Andy Hamlin said.
“I want to commend the efforts and cooperation shown by every agency involved: the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the State Bureau of Investigation and the Alabama State Troopers.”
The investigation began that Sunday when the crash happened on Fayette County 73 near Morris Cemetery Road, about two miles south of Glen Allen.
“The driver …was driving aggressively at an extreme rate of speed,’’ the ALEA trooper wrote. “Due to his actions, the driver was unable to operate his vehicle safely on the wet roadway.”
The wreck happened when Collins was trying to negotiate a curve to the right, according to the report.
The force of the impact caused Collins and his wife to be ejected from the truck. They were not wearing seat belts.
Ryleigh Collins, who was unrestrained in the back seat, was pronounced dead on the scene at 11 a.m.
Collins, who worked for a roofing company, was taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital, where he died the following day at 1:06 p.m.
Bailey was airlifted to UAB.
Following the deadly crash, investigators learned that Kahleb was missing.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office several days later issued a press release saying the 1-year-old had been missing since the Dec. 8 single-vehicle crash.
The following day, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency issued a missing alert for Kahleb.
Investigators carried out multiple searches at the family’s home on Highway 129 in the Winfield area and traveled to Birmingham several times to interview Bailey at the hospital.
Court records indicate the Alabama Department of Human Resources had been involved with the family.
The criminal complaint states Bailey “failed to report a missing child by delaying to make or failing to cause to be made the report with willful and reckless disregard for the safety of the child and the child suffered serious bodily harm or death, to wit: physical injuries to the child and the child was removed from the home and taken to an unknown location and no report was made by any resident of the home.”
Bailey was arrested Dec. 11 and remains held in the Fayette County Jail on $100,000 bond.
One of Bailey’s appointed attorneys, James Standridge, said the public defender’s office is now working to learn the facts of the case prior to the preliminary hearing which is set for Jan. 15.
John Bailey is Wendy Bailey’s father and lived with the family.
Brad Collins on Nov. 6 posted this on Facebook: “Our son is not doing well. He is not growing has major back issues. His organs are growing but not his body. He has to have surgery at some point. Keep him in your prayers. Been rough and just seems going to be a long rough road ahead of us.”
The investigation is ongoing with additional charges possible against the mother, Hamlin said.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 205-932-3205, the State Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-392-8011 or Hamlin’s office at 205-367-9915.
“Now that the charges have been brought,” Hamlin said, “I look forward to getting the case to court to seek justice for these two innocent children.”
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory at 9:57 a.m. on Tuesday valid for Tuesday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. for Lauderdale, Colbert, Limestone, Madison, Jackson and DeKalb counties.
The weather service comments, “West winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph expected.”
“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result,” explains the weather service. “Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.”

The lack of childcare has made it harder for some people, especially single mothers, to join or return to the workforce, legislators and advocates said.
“When we address the barriers that women and families face, we are making Alabama better, Alabama stronger,” Melanie Bridgeforth, CEO of the Women’s Foundation of Alabama, said when Gov. Kay Ivey signed the bill in May. “Pro business is being pro family.”
The three main components of the new law:
Employer tax credits – Companies can receive tax credits for offering child care facilities for their employees or for covering the cost of that care.
The credits can be up to $600,000 per year for a company to offset eligible expenses.
Eligible expenses are for construction, renovation, or expansion of a childcare facility, as well as the purchase of equipment, maintenance, and operation. Eligible expenses also include payments to childcare facilities for children of employees.
Companies with fewer than 25 employees can receive credits equal to 100% of their eligible expenses. Larger companies can receive up to 75%.
The credits will have a statewide, aggregate cap of $15 million in 2025, $17.5 million in 2026, and $20 million in 2027.
Facility tax credits – Childcare facilities can receive a tax credit of up to $25,000 per year.
The amount of the credits will be based on the number of children at a center who are enrolled in the federal child care subsidy program administered by the Alabama Department of Human Resources. A facility’s tax credit amount is also tied its quality of care rating by DHR, which assigns ratings of one star through five stars.
The aggregate statewide cap for facility tax credits will be $5 million.
Grants – DHR will award grants to nonprofit childcare providers for construction, expansion, repairs, or operations of facilities that increase quality or capacity. The maximum annual grant per provider is $50,000, with an aggregate annual cap of $5 million statewide.
The tax credits and grants will be available for three years, through 2027. The Legislature will decide whether to extend the law after reports from the Department of Revenue and the Department of Labor that will show the levels of participation in the tax credits and grants and the impact on the workforce participation rate.
The 2024 legislative session ended in May and saw the Republican majority pass many of their top priorities, including a bill to allow parents to use taxpayer funds for private school.
The CHOOSE Act creates education savings accounts, or ESAs, of up to $7,000 a year per child for private school or $2,000 for home school.
Most bills passed during the 2024 legislative session have already gone into effect before the start of the new year. Many took effect within three months of being signed or on Oct. 1.
Here are the bills signed into law that are taking effect on Jan. 1:
Involuntary commitment for addiction: SB240 by Sen. Will Barfoot, R-Montgomery, will authorize probate judges to involuntarily commit to care an individual who suffers from a drug addiction that is secondary to a primary diagnosis of mental illness. The new law also creates a process for a probate judge to ask a court to suspend a jail sentence for a misdemeanor or municipal ordinance violation to allow the offender to receive care under an involuntary commitment order.
Mandatory training for mayors, councils: SB291 by Sen. Jabo Waggoner, R-Vestavia Hills, will require mayors and city council members to receive at least 10 hours of training on the powers and duties of municipal officials, including the use of public funds, ethics, public records, bidding on public works projects, budgeting, the open meetings law, and other topics.
First responder training on disabilities: HB126 by Rep. Leigh Hulsey, R-Helena, will require firefighters and emergency medical responders to receive training on interacting with people with sensory needs or invisible disabilities, such as individuals with hearing or vision loss, autism, or other conditions than are not readily apparent.
Exempting capital gains from income taxes: SB297 by Sen. Tim Melson, R-Florence, will exempt capital gains made from the exchange of precious metal bullion from the state income tax. Precious metal bullion includes coins, bars or rounds containing primarily refined gold, silver, platinum, or palladium that is marked and valued primarily by its weight, purity, and content.
Expanding military pay income tax exemptions: SB209 by Sen. Andrew Jones, R-Centre, expands a state income tax exemption for military pay in combat zones to apply to members of the National Guard and Reserve who are activated by the governor or president in response to emergencies.
Liability protection for cattle owners: SB164 by Sen. Randy Price, R-Opelika, protects cattle owners from liability for injury, loss, damage, or death resulting from “the inherent risk of bovine activity,” under certain circumstances. The protection does not apply in cases of “willful and wanton” disregard for safety, or if the owner does not post a warning sign on the fence or enclosure holding the cattle. Bovine activity also covers bison, buffalo, and oxen.

During the victory, LSU threw the ball effectively. The team racked up nearly 300 passing yards and threw for three touchdowns, so they will try to perform similarly today.
The Bears also enter this matchup with an 8-4 record, and they have won six consecutive games. In their most recent game, the Bears defeated Kansas 45-17.
During the victory, Baylor outscored Kansas 24-7 in the second half. The Baylor offense accrued more than 600 total yards.

An overnight shooting at a Tuscaloosa gas station left one man dead and another behind bars.
Tuscaloosa police were dispatched at 11:30 p.m. Monday to a report of a shooting in the 3000 block of 20th Street. They arrived to find the victim, whose identity has not been released, dead on the scene.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit responded to lead the investigation.
Capt. Marty Sellers said interviews with witnesses and evidence collected on the scene led to the identification of 41-year-old Dennis Anderson as the shooter.
Anderson is charged with murder. He is being held without bond in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
Sellers said additional charges against Anderson and others could be filed.
Community involvement was a factor in the successful identification of Anderson, he said.
