Arrest made in death of man found in lower Delta after car recovered in Florida

A man is currently in custody as a suspect in the homicide investigation of a body found Jan. 29 in Baldwin County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

ALEA identified the suspect as Zachri Frazer, 22, of Kingston, Jamaica. The agency said evidence was discovered indicating he was living in Mobile recently.

Frazier is suspected of having killed Donald Neece, 33, whose body was found in the lower Delta in Spanish Fort by ALEA marine troopers.

ALEA said that after opening a death investigation it was determined that Frazer stole Neece’s vehicle and drove it to Florida. A law enforcement bulletin was then put out for Frazer and the stolen vehicle.

Deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop Frazer but he refused, ALEA said.

After a short pursuit Frazer was arrested by the officers. He now awaits extradition back to Mobile on a warrant for murder, according to ALEA.

Former CNN host feuds with Kanye West over rumor about wife’s Grammys outfit

Don Lemon fired back at Kanye West after the controversial rapper called the former CNN host a “goofball” and claimed Lemon spread an incorrect rumor that West and his wife, Bianca Censori, were kicked out of the Grammys. Censori shocked the red carpet by wearing a nude outfit. The couple then left the event without ever going inside the Crypto.com Arena.

Despite online rumors that West had been booted from Grammys, sources close to the Grammys told Variety at the time that such claims were “not true” and that West simply “walked the carpet, got in his car and left.” West targeted Lemon in a since-deleted Instagram post as the source of the rumors, although Lemon denied it in a video posted to his YouTube page.

“First of all, Kanye, Yee, Ye, whatever your name is — I did not start a rumor about you being kicked out of the Grammys,” Lemon said. “I actually corrected it. I saw someone on your team who asked me to correct it because it had been reported everywhere. First of all, get your shit straight.”

Lemon then added with a laugh: “You, of all people, calling me a c–? Negro, that Make America Great Again hat must be too tight on your head.”

West was nominated at the Grammys this year in the best rap song category for his song “Carnival,” which he co-wrote with Ty Dolla Sign. The duo lost the prize, which went to Kendrick Lamar for “Not Like Us.” Censori, an architect who works for West’s Yeezy company, reportedly married the rapper in a private ceremony in January 2023.

Alabama lawmaker again files ‘What is a Woman’ bill as 2025 legislative session starts

Rep. Susan DuBose, R-Hoover, has pre-filed her controversial, “What is a Woman” bill for the 2025 legislative session.

DuBose previously introduced similar legislation during the previous legislative session but it failed to become law.

Opponents of the legislation have argued it is anti-transgender and seeks to address a non-existent issue.

The bill provides definitions for certain sex-based terms for use under state law. These terms include boy, girl, man, woman, father, mother, male, female and sex.

Male and female are defined based upon their reproductive organs, according to the legislation.

A female is defined as someone whose reproductive system produces ova and a male is defined as someone whose reproductive system produces sperm.

The bill also has a provision stating that, “state and local public entities may establish separate single-sex spaces or environments in certain circumstances.”

During an October town hall in Baldwin County, DuBose said sex is fixed at birth and “determined by God.”

“Because we all know, sex is determined at birth and is determined by God,” DuBose said.

“It’s actually determined at conception. So, you cannot change your sex. You can choose to identify however you want to but that does not change your sex, and that’s what we’re talking about in this legislation.”

The Alabama Transgender Rights Action Coalition provided a comment to AL.com regarding DuBose’s reintroduction of the bill.

The organization criticized the “culture war” legislation and said it was written by an out-of-state special interest group.

“We are once again disappointed in Representative DuBose’s decision to advance harmful “culture war” legislation like HB107, which explicitly permits our justice system to discriminate against transgender people simply because they are transgender,” ALTRAC said.

“This bill, which DuBose chose to title the “What is a Woman Act,” was written by an out-of-state special interest group whose stated goal is to undermine the progress made by American women’s rights activists. DuBose incorrectly describes HB107 as a “Women’s Bill of Rights” — even while explicitly stating over and over that it does not grant any woman any rights — and while her party is beginning to dismantle equal employment protections for women nationally.

She continues to prioritize this bill instead of addressing our state’s failure to act on the skyrocketing costs of food, housing, and healthcare — issues that actually impact the working-class Alabamians who make our state great.”

DuBose has indicated that she intends to file several more bills related to sex and gender over the course of the legislative session.

Alabama Senate’s new leader open to gambling bill, worries about losing revenue to other state

The 2025 legislative session started at noon today, and one of the first orders of business was for the Alabama Senate to elect a new leader.

The senators elected Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman, as president pro tem. The vote was 33-0.

Gudger replaces Greg Reed of Jasper, who left the Senate to lead the new Workforce Department under the Gov. Kay Ivey administration, a revamped version of what was previously called the Department of Labor.

The Senate passed a resolution honoring Reed, who spoke, before voting to pick Gudger as his successor.

Gudger was elected to the Senate in 2018 and reelected in 2022. Before coming to the Senate, he served 14 years on the Cullman City Council.

Gudger said he would approach his new leadership position in the spirt of teamwork.

“My job is to make sure that everybody feels included and heard and create a team for the Alabama state Senate as we move forward.”

As for priorities this session, Gudger said they would be protecting Alabama families and values and promoting efficiency and transparency in government.

The senator said fighting illegal immigration would be a focus, and said those efforts would mirror those at the federal level under President Trump.

“Most of the federal government is going after convicted felons, people with warrants, child molesters, and I think we have to do the same,” Gudger said. “We start at the top and work our way down. But right now, that’s what they’re focusing on.”

Last year, a bill to allow voters to decide whether to authorize a lottery, casinos, and sports betting fell one vote short of passing in the Senate. Legislative leaders have said lottery legislation is not a priority this year.

On Tuesday, Gudger said he would wait and see what legislation on gambling is introduced, if any. He said he was concerned about the loss of revenue. Alabama is surrounded by states that offer a lottery.

“I think we’re leaving a lot of money on the table where it’s going to other states,” Gudger said. “That’s my personal opinion. How we handle that, as a Senate body, I’ll be doing what the majority of this body wants.

“So I’m going to have to look at that bill whenever it does get filed, or if it gets filed. And then from that, we’ll take it apart piece by piece and make sure it’s the right thing to do for Alabama.”

Ivey will give her priorities during her State of the State address tonight at the Capitol. The governor has said bills on crime and public safety would be her top priority.

The push for bills addressing crime comes after Birmingham ended 2024 with 151 homicides, the most in a single year since 1933. Montgomery also saw a surge in violent crime in 2024, prompting the creation of the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit, known as MACS.

Legislators cannot vote on bills until the third meeting day of the session. But they can introduce bills today. Lawmakers pre-filed more than 100 bills in advance of the session.
