Former Auburn standout wins NFLPA’s highest honor

New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton is the winner of the 2025 Alan Page Community Award, the NFL Players Association announced on Wednesday.

The former Auburn standout received the honor for his work with the Far Rockaway, Harlem and Bronx Giants football programs, which foster police-community relations through mentorship, tutoring and sports for 150 boys across 20 schools.

“Winning this award means more than words can describe,” Slayton said. “The main goal for me and my family has always been to be able to give back to the people in our communities.

“It’s not about the recognition, but I accept this award with grace and humility. I hope it brings further light to the causes my family and I support. I am extremely grateful to be named the 2025 Alan Page Community Award Winner.”

The NFLPA will donate $100,000 to Slayton’s Left-Hand Right-Hand Foundation, which aims to help economically underserved communities, particularly involving the young and the old.

The NFLPA considers the Alan Page Community Award its “highest honor.” It is presented annually to a player who “demonstrates a profound dedication to positively impacting his team’s city and communities across the country, following in the spirit of Pro Football Hall of Famer, humanitarian and civil-rights pioneer Alan Page.”

The winner is selected by the votes of NFL players from a set of five finalists chosen from the 18 weekly Community MVPs selected throughout the 2024 NFL regular season.

Two former Alabama All-Americans also were among the finalists this year – Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry and Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly.

Ocean liner set to become world’s largest artificial reef soon to begin voyage to Alabama

After several months of delays, famed Cold War carrier vessel the S.S. United States is set to begin its journey down to Mobile to become the world’s largest artificial reef

The ship is scheduled to depart its current dock in Philadelphia at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow.

“After completing comprehensive due diligence involving extensive testing and reporting to local, state, and federal agencies, Okaloosa County has now received final approval from the U.S. Coast Guard to begin moving the SS United States from Pier 82 in South Philadelphia to a docking area in Mobile, Alabama,” reads a release from the county.

“While still subject to last-minute changes or cancellations due to weather or other factors, operations to move America’s Flagship will begin on Thursday, February 6th, with the ship being moved laterally from Pier 82 to the adjacent Pier 80.”

“She will then be towed down the Delaware River on Saturday, February 8th,” the release continues.

County officials previously predicted that it would take roughly two weeks for tugboats to tow the ship down to Mobile.

Once there, contractors will begin the process of ensuring it is safe for ocean life and poking holes in its hull to make it land upright at the bottom of the Gulf.

This process is predicted to take a year to complete after which the ship will take its final journey to a location about 20 miles south of the Florida Panhandle region in the Destin-Fort Walton Beach area, according to the commission.

The ship was previously scheduled to depart for Mobile on Nov. 14 but was delayed due to weather concerns then delayed further after the Coast Guard requested further research to ensure it was safe to move, according to county public information officer Nick Tomecek.

While Florida officials are excited to welcome the liner to its new home, some have spoken out against the move.

John Quadrozzi Jr., concrete magnate and owner of the Gowanus Bay Terminal in Brooklyn, previously told Gothamist that he would like to turn the vessel into a sustainable “floating ecosystem.”

And in an open letter to AL.com, Craig Lambert from Phoenix, Ariz. previously said he was “utterly devastated and enraged” by the ship’s fate.

“While millions have been spent to restore and refurbish other historic ships, such as the USS Missouri and USS New Jersey, the SS United States has been left to languish, forgotten, and neglected,” Lambert wrote.

“The very thought of this Majestic Lady being reduced to an artificial reef is a travesty, an insult to her legacy and the countless souls who have sailed upon her.”

Originally designed as a top-secret, convertible troop carrier during the Cold War in 1951, the S.S. United States has transported presidents, famous actors, heads of state, tourists, members of the armed forces, and immigrants before it was retired in 1969.

Notable passengers included four U.S. Presidents (Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, and a young Bill Clinton), Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and John Wayne.

In-state talent headlines Charles Kelly’s first Jacksonville State recruiting class

Charles Kelly’s first full recruiting class as Jax State’s head coach features plenty of familiar in-state faces.

Jax State announced its full list of February signees on Wednesday as part of National Signing Day, with five of those coming from the state of Alabama.

The group of 12 players will be joined by 11 transfer portal signees and nine December signees, who were all previously announced.

Kelly praised his coaching staff for the job done in recruiting over the last month, especially with the recent timing of his hire as Jax State’s coach.

“It takes a village to recruit a player,” he said. “Throughout our building, whether it be the personnel department, whether it be the recruiting department, whether it be operations, all the things that go in and make it work to be able to show off what we have to offer here at Jax State. I give our staff a ton of credit for being able to do it.”

Among the in-state talent recruited include Houston Academy wide receiver Gabe Glover, Pisgah athlete Luke Gilbert (signed as a tight end), Pleasant Grove linebacker Ian Mitchell and Etowah athlete Jameson Scissum.

Kelly also saw a flip on National Signing Day, with JQ Brooks of Hueytown changing his commitment from UAB to Jax State and signing on Wednesday.

Alexandria High kicker Cleat Forrest and Houston Academy quarterback Kadyn Mitchell both announced their commitments to Jax State, but have not officially been announced by the program.

“Local recruiting is very important to me because there are a lot of good football players around this area, and there are a lot of good football coaches that do a good job of developing players,” Kelly said. “We would be crazy not to start and work out instead to go out and work in.”

The four December signees were all signed by Rich Rodriguez, now at West Virginia, and elected to stay with the program under Kelly and his staff; those include Jackson offensive lineman Markevian Blake, Briarwood Christian defender Luke Reynolds and Montgomery Academy athletes/safety DJ Vinson.

“We were on a time crunch just because of when I came on the job, and we had to balance portal recruiting along with high school recruiting,” Kelly said. “What, I don’t think, a lot of people realize, even the guys that signed early in December, they had the opportunity to go somewhere else if they chose to do so. So, we basically had to re-recruit those guys and create relationships with those young men and their families.

“That was a big part of this process, and we’re glad we were able to keep all those guys with us.”

Jax State added three quarterbacks, with Kentucky transfer Gavin Wimsatt and Memphis transfer Cade Cunningham joining the program. The Gamecocks also signed quarterback Jack Moran, who earned New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year honors after a standout season at The Hun School.

The three will join a quarterback group that includes former Fairhope star Caden Creel.

Kelly said he had to put a strong emphasis on the quarterback room and the group of cornerbacks, with both positions depleted after graduation and others left via the transfer portal.

“Really, when I got settled in, there was one quarterback on scholarship and basically one corner, so we had to work on that,” Kelly said. “As of today we’ve got four quarterbacks on scholarship, and we’ve got another guy that will be here that I can’t talk about, just because of NCAA rules, but we feel like we’re going to have five quarterbacks on campus that will be able to compete.”

Jalen Milroe doesn’t want to change positions in NFL: ‘You never ask a zebra to be a dog’

Alabama football started Jalen Milroe at quarterback for the majority of the past two seasons. But could he play elsewhere in the NFL?

Not so fast, if you ask Milroe.

“It’s always at quarterback,” Milroe said while speaking with Pro Football Talk in New Orleans at the Super Bowl. “Of course the question’s asked, switching positions and stuff like that. What I can do. You never ask a zebra to be a dog.”

Milroe declared for the 2025 NFL Draft after spending four seasons with the Crimson Tide. Three of those he played for Nick Saban, and in the final year, Milroe worked with Kalen DeBoer.

Milroe started every game in 2024 and was the primary starter in 2023. He had some elite moments mixed with struggles. In 2023, he threw the famous pass on fourth-and-31 to beat Auburn in the Iron Bowl. He also proved key in beating Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. In 2024, he led Alabama to an upset win over Georgia in Bryant-Denny Stadium. In both seasons, he ran wild against LSU.

But Milroe also experienced some lows. Milroe ended both seasons with losses to Michigan in the postseason. Against Oklahoma this season, Alabama managed only three points. In losses, Milroe often struggled to protect the football.

Despite the ups and downs, there’s no denying Milroe plays an exciting brand of football. He’s often the best athlete on the field. In 2024, he rushed for 20 touchdowns in addition to his 16 passing touchdowns. Milroe also ran for 12 touchdowns in 2023 to go with 23 passing touchdowns.

The NFL Draft is set to start April 24, 2025 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Longtime senator facing health questions falls down stairs in Washington

Kentucky senior U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell fell down the stairs in Washington Wednesday afternoon, according to media reports.

Fox News congressional correspondent Chad Pergram posted to social media site X that he’d confirmed the incident occurred after McConnell, 82, voted to confirm Scott Turner as the secretary of United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“Unclear about injuries. But Fox is told he appears to be ok. McConnell was helped up by Sens. Steve Daines (R-MT) and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK),” Pergram posted.

Another reporter with Washington outlet Punchbowl News witnessed the fall.

“Sen McConnell just fell down the stairs on his way out of the chamber,” Diego Areas Munhoz wrote on X. “He got up with the help from some senators and seemed to walk it off as he left.”

The fall is the latest in a series of health incidents the senator has experienced.

Late last year, the senator sprained his wrist and cut his face as a result of another fall in Washington.

Prior to that, he experienced two high-profile “freeze up” incidents on camera. Both occurred during the Summer of 2023 — one at a press conference in Washington and another at an event in Northern Kentucky.

In March 2023, McConnell had to go the hospital after falling at a dinner event in Washington.

The incidents have prompted questions over whether or not McConnell will seek reelection in 2026, when his six-year term is up.

McConnell, who was born in Sheffield, has not publicly made a commitment either way.

McConnell was just replaced by South Dakota U.S. Senator John Thune as leader of the Senate Republican caucus.

McConnell’s office did not immediately return a Herald-Leader request for comment on the incident.
