A second person has been injured by two hogs on the same Alabama farm where a 51-year-old was found dead under his vehicle earlier this week with injuries that appeared to be from his livestock.
Steven Kyle Satterfield was found dead Monday at his property off Highway 278 in Piedmont.
Satterfield had multiple injuries from his hogs, authorities said, but the cause of his death is pending.
Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown previously said it’s unclear if Satterfield suffered a medical event and then was attacked by the hogs or if the hogs caused his death.
Police Chief Nathan Johnson on Friday released new information in the ongoing investigation.
The chief said police and fire medics responded about 3:30 p.m. Monday to Bramlett Road on a report of a person possibly dead at the small farm.
When first responders arrived, there was a large hog loose on the property and a section of the fence was down.
They were able to get the hog in the enclosure to tend to Satterfield, who was under a vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
“To remove any rumors, the victim was not eaten,’’ Johnson said.
“He had injuries believed to have been made by the hogs and additional information is needed to ensure the injuries are consistent with what appears to have happened.”
The chief said the two hogs that were believed to have injured Satterfield were removed from the property and taken to a veterinarian to keep them secured.
Two other hogs on the farm were moved into an inoperable trailer on the property. They were secured and cared for while the fence was repaired.
Satterfield’s family and the Department of Agriculture were notified, Johnson said.
After a review of state law, the hogs were returned to the family to make the decision on what to do with them.
The family took possession of the two hogs at the vet clinic and did not take them back to the Piedmont property.
On Thursday, Johnson said, there was an injury that occurred during the feeding of the two hogs that had remained on the property.
He did not elaborate on the seriousness of the injury and efforts to reach him for additional comment were not immediately successful,
“Because of the aggressive behavior shown by the two remaining hogs, the family/owners euthanized the hogs on site to prevent further injuries,’’ the chief said.
The injured person was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
“The Piedmont Police Department asks the public to be mindful of the family and not spread unconfirmed or false information while they deal with this tough time,’’ Johnson said.
“The injured party and the family do not want to release any further personal information.”
