Will Morgan Wallen’s Alabama music festival return? What the country music star said about coming back

Following the first ever Sand in my Boots music festival this past weekend in Gulf Shores, many fans are wondering if they should be keeping their eye out for next year’s tickets.

“Me and a couple of my closest friends and teammates, we’ve been throwing the idea of doing a festival around for a long time now, and we just happened to run into the right partner and the right people to work with,” Wallen told crowds at his closing performance Sunday night.

“And with a lot of hard work and a lot of really great artists to come out here, man, we got to make that happen.”

He went on to say he’d “heard nothing but great reports” about the weekend and added, somewhat ambiguously, that he and his team would “try to do it again sometime.”

Organizers originally presented Sand in My Boots as a one-year takeover of the Hangout Fest.

But long before the gates even opened, the newcomer had quickly usurped its predecessor’s success, selling out just two hours after general admissions tickets opened up.

Before either one can return, organizers and Gulf Shores city leaders will have to come to terms on a new franchise agreement, as the old one expired with this year’s event, according to reports from AL.com’s Lawrence Specker.

Efforts to reach representatives for Hangout Fest were not immediately successful.

Weather threat forces change to 2 Madison County graduations

The Madison County Schools district is adjusting graduation plans for two high schools in response to a severe weather forecast issued by the National Weather Service.

These changes to Hazel Green’s and Buckhorn’s graduations are being made to ensure the safety of students, family, faculty and staff, the school district said.

Hazel Green High School’s graduation ceremony will still occur on Tuesday. However, it will begin one hour earlier than planned to avoid the most dangerous part of the weather system.

The ceremony at the Von Braun Center’s Propst Arena will begin at 2 p.m. The adjustment will allow participants to safely return home, the district said in a statement.

Buckhorn’s graduation has been rescheduled. The ceremony will now be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Propst Arena.

Trump administration to pay millions to family of Jan. 6 rioter killed by police

The Trump administration has agreed to pay just under $5 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit that Ashli Babbitt’s family filed over her shooting by an officer during the U.S. Capitol riot, according to a person with knowledge of the settlement. The person insisted on anonymity to discuss with The Associated Press terms of a deal that have not been made public.

The settlement will resolve the $30 million federal lawsuit that Babbitt’s estate filed last year in Washington, D.C. On Jan. 6, 2021, a Capitol police officer shot Babbitt as she tried to climb through the broken window of a barricaded door leading to the Speaker’s Lobby.

The officer who shot her was cleared of wrongdoing by the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of Columbia, which concluded that he acted in self-defense and in the defense of members of Congress. The Capitol Police also cleared the officer.

Settlement terms haven’t been disclosed in public court filings. On May 2, lawyers for Babbitt’s estate and the Justice Department told a federal judge that they had reached a settlement in principle but were still working out the details before a final agreement could be signed.

Justice Department spokespeople and two attorneys for the Babbitt family didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran from San Diego, was unarmed when she was shot by the officer. The lawsuit alleges that the plainclothes officer failed to de-escalate the situation and did not give her any warnings or commands before opening fire.

The suit also accused the Capitol Police of negligence, claiming the department should have known that the officer was “prone to behave in a dangerous or otherwise incompetent manner.”

“Ashli posed no threat to the safety of anyone,” the lawsuit said.

The officer said in a televised interview that he fired as a “last resort.” He said he didn’t know if the person jumping through the window was armed when he pulled the trigger.

Thousands of people stormed the Capitol after President Donald Trump spoke to a crowd of supporters at his Jan. 6 “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House. More than 100 police officers were injured in the attack.

In January, on his first day back in the White House, Trump pardoned, commuted the prison sentences or ordered the dismissal of charges for all of the more than 1,500 people charged with crimes in the riot.

Pop superstar’s upcoming album features Alabama singer

The musical collaborations between Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard continue.

Pop superstar Cyrus’ upcoming album “Something Beautiful” features rock/soul singer and guitarist Howard.

An Athens native, Howard appears on the song “Walk Of Fame,” according to a 23 second clip with the “Something Beautiful” tracklist Cyrus posted on social media May 19.

In February, Cyrus and Howard duetted on a cover of Queen’s 1980 rockabilly hit “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” during a New York concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live.”

The next night, Cyrus and Howard teamed up again. Backed by hip-hop band The Roots, the two women sang “Nothing Compares 2 U,” the Prince-written ballad Sinéad O’Connor took to a No. 1 hit in 1990, during star-studded TV special, “SNL50: The Anniversary Special.”

Following those two onstage collaborations, Cyrus wrote on X. “Singing beside Brittany has been a dream of mine. She is vocally the best of the best and as the performance grew closer I started questioning my choice to stand next to her and perform. At every rehearsal (which was very few) I was completely blown away. It doesn’t get better than BH.”

Cyrus, 32, daughter of “Achy Breaky Heart” heartthrob Billy Ray Cyrus, rose to fame in the aughts as star of Disney Channel show “Hannah Montana.”

Miley Cyrus’ biggest hits range from the ear-candy of “Party In The U.S.A.” and coming-of-age anthem “Wrecking Ball” to rock-tinged “Angels Like You” and self-love ode “Flowers.” “Something Beautiful” will be Cyrus’ ninth studio album.

Howard first made her name in the 2010s with Grammy winning band Alabama Shakes, with R&B-tinged indie rock, as heard on songs like “Hold On” and “Always Alright.” She eventually went solo, including Grammy-winning stoner ballad “Stay High.”

Now 36, Howard has reunited with Alabama Shakes for a 2025 tour which includes one stop in the band’s home state. Her raw new solo track “Pale, Pale Moon” appears on the soundtrack for hit horror movie “Sinners.”

As Memorial Day nears, Airbnb vows to continue crack down on parties in Birmingham homes

If you’re planning to book a home for a summer party, Airbnb is warning you – look elsewhere.

The company is touting the tech solutions that Airbnb says prevented more than 500 people from booking a home in Alabama for a party last year.

The platform, which allows users to rent out homes and rooms, and which allows others to book stays on the properties, has proprietary anti-party technology, which it is rolling out for Memorial Day and Independence Day for the fourth consecutive year..

The anti-party defenses active over these summer holidays use machine learning to help prevent potentially higher-risk bookings of entire home listings from being made, and help enforce Airbnb’s global party ban.

Guests attempting to book will either be blocked from doing so, or redirected to alternative accommodations on the platform, Airbnb says.

How does it work?

The system looks at the type of listing being booked, the duration of the stay, the distance to the listing from the guest’s primary location and whether the booking is last minute, among other factors.

In fact, the San Francisco-based company said its software kept about 51,000 people in the U.S. from booking house parties last year.

In Birmingham, about 130 bookings were prevented during both Memorial Day and the Fourth of July weekend.

A booking in Birmingham, on March 3, 2024, resulted in the death of 21-year-old Phong “Timmy” Nguyen. According to police, the shooting happened at a short-term rental Airbnb that was being used for a party or gathering.

Court records say Nguyen was killed during a theft of cash and a gun. Two people were charged in connection with the killing.

According to Airbnb, parties are extremely rare on the platform. In 2024, 0.12% of reservations in Birmingham resulted in an allegation of a party.

As a result of its measures, the company says it has seen a 54% decrease in the rate of party reports in Birmingham over the last five years.

Derrick Henry gets 30 minutes of sleep, works out, signs $30 million deal

Before signing a two-year, $30 million contract extension with the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, running back Derrick Henry worked out – on 30 minutes of sleep.

Flight delays from his home in Dallas to his home in Baltimore put the former Alabama All-American way behind schedule for Monday’s signing.

“I just had some flight trouble,” Henry said at a Monday press conference. “Bad weather in Dallas, and the flight got a little delayed, so I got in really late. Once I got in, it was almost time to get here. I think I got home at 4:45 in the morning, and I wanted to get here at 6, so I thought, ‘I’m just going to stay up and just get here and go work out.’”

Henry’s dedication to his physical fitness comes from his determination “to outwork everybody.”

“I want to be great,” Henry said, “so no matter how good it is or no matter how bad it is, I’m always focused on trying to get better each and every day and each and every way I can. For you to be great, you’ve got to focus on being consistent. You’ve got to outwork everybody, and that’s the approach I try to take every single day I wake up. Even the days you don’t want to, you’ve got to find a way.”

The Ravens signed Henry to a two-year, $16 million contract as an NFL free agent after the running back turned 30 last year. Henry responded with 1,921 rushing yards, the most in a season for a player 30 years old or older in NFL history.

“I think if you watch his work ethic,” Ravens running-backs coach Willie Taggert said on Monday, “and you see the way he works on and off the field, how he takes care of his body and then just to watch him out there, you don’t see a downside. He’s still getting stronger, if you ask me. But the way that he works, and then the performance, if you look at the performance he had last year – one of his better years, and that’s nine years in — that’s big time.

“But Derrick works hard. It’s important to him. He told you guys a minute ago he wants to win Super Bowl, and I know he’s going to do everything he can to help this football team accomplish that.”

After eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans that ended with a 3-14 showing in 2023, Henry said the Ravens were helping him stay young.

“Being able to play alongside a player like (quarterback) Lamar (Jackson), the best player in the league, it was just dynamic and a lot of fun,” Henry said. “There’s a lot of young guys on the offense and on this team, so I feel like they give me youth and give me a lot of energy. Last year, it was a lot of fun. We accomplished winning the division, got into the playoffs, but ultimately, we came up short, so it’s a lot of fuel that should go into this season. Guys should be motivated — they are motivated — and hungry to get ready for the next one.”

Henry has run for 11,423 yards and 106 touchdowns on 2,355 carries in his career. He’s 19th on the NFL career rushing list, and 1,316 yards from reaching the No. 10 ball-carrier, Tony Dorsett.

“When you say something like that, it’s a surreal moment to be able to have that opportunity and be in that conversation,” Henry said about his standing among the NFL’s best running backs. “God has blessed me tremendously, and since I was 5 years old, I fell in love with this game. Playing this position, I always looked up to the great running backs who played this game at a high level, who are legends of the game, dreaming of my name being mentioned with them one day. For me to somewhat have that opportunity, it’s so surreal, and God is so good. I’ve had a lot of people throughout my life to help me get to this point.”

Only five NFL players have more rushing touchdowns than Henry’s career total of 106. Henry has had at least 10 rushing touchdowns in seven consecutive seasons. The only player with a longer such streak is LaDainian Tomlinson with nine in a row from 2001 through 2009.

Eight players have rushed for at least 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns at 31 years old or older, with John Riggins doing so twice. Only one of those nine performances has occurred in the past 15 seasons, with Rakeem Mostert breaking through for the Miami Dolphins in 2023.

Mostert ran for 278 yards and two touchdowns in 2024. Baltimore is counting on Henry holding form for at least two more seasons.

The extension ties Henry to the Ravens through the 2027 season, with what has become a three-year, $37 million deal since the running back already was under contract for the 2025 season.

Henry has gone from $8 million for the 2025 season to $25 million over the next two seasons by signing the extension. After the 2026 season, the new deal calls for Henry to get a $1 million roster bonus and an $11 million salary in 2027, but none of that money is guaranteed. His paychecks for the next two seasons, including an $11.745 million signing bonus, are guaranteed.

“I’m just very grateful for this organization,” Henry said. “Just like last year, coming off the season I had, I wasn’t really happy, and I wanted to prove myself and just get an opportunity. And they gave me the opportunity. I’m very appreciative of how much they value me, to give me an extension, and I just want to show them how much it means to me, how much this organization means to me by the way I work and what I do on the field.”

Henry also had 270 yards and three touchdowns on 42 carries in two playoff games last season. The Ravens’ season ended with a 27-25 loss to the Buffalo Bills during which Henry ran for 84 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries.

“You never get over it,” Henry said. “You just deal with it, because that’s just what it is. When you get the opportunity again, you try to make it a different outcome, especially on my part and how I play. I think everybody who is on this team feels that same way, but I think you’ve got to put the work in for that to be able to happen. And then when we’re all here, we push each other, hold each other accountable and make each other better, so when we’re on that field, it all comes together, and we all get what we want at the end of the day. …

“I always think I can do my job a lot better than I did last season. The saying is, ‘You’re only as good as your last game,’ and I don’t think my last game was up to par to my standard. I think when I’m in that position again, just play better. But right now, I’m just focused on getting better, improving, getting stronger, working on my weaknesses and improving things that I’m good at to be able to help his team and be better than I was last year just so that we’re better.”

Alabama football star reveals his ‘strike fear’ approach: ‘I’m better than you’

Defensive lineman LT Overton doesn’t take a passive approach to any arena of football. He made that much clear during a recent interview.

Overton, taking part in the “All In” special on Alabama football spring practice set to premier at 6 p.m. CT on Monday on the SEC Network, discussed his mindset and approach to football.

“Really just to dominate,” Overton said. “Really strike fear into the man in front of me. That’s how I go about my day every day when we go on the practice field. How I go about it, practice, games, scrimmage, doesn’t matter; I’m better than you. That’s just how I feel.”

Overton is fresh off his first season with the Crimson Tide. He tallied 42 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 2024.

His sack total wasn’t high, but Overton tallied more pressures than any other Alabama player this past season. His 39 total pressures (sacks, hits, hurries) ranked 12th among all SEC players, per Pro Football Focus’ charting.

Overton transferred to the Crimson Tide from Texas A&M, where he spent two seasons.

Six Auburn baseball players earn end of season All-SEC honors

After a much improved 17-13 season in Southeastern Conference play, a handful of Auburn baseball players earned individual honors from the SEC in its annual end of season awards.

Six Tigers made it on at least one of the All-SEC teams, and Chris Rembert was the only one to make it on two (freshman and second team).

Ike Irish was the lone Auburn player selected to the All-SEC First Team, earning the nod after batting .354, hitting 16 home runs and adding 52 RBI. It’s the second time Irish has been named to the first team, becoming the first Auburn player to do so since current associate head coach Gabe Gross in 2000-01.

As mentioned earlier, Rembert made both the second team and the SEC All-Freshman team, leading Auburn in batting average (.355) and blasting 10 home runs in his first season on the Plains. He’s the first Auburn player to make an All-SEC first or second team since Hunter Morris in 2018.

Starting pitcher Sam Dutton joined Rembert on the second team after putting together an impressive season as Auburn’s ace. He finished the regular season with a 3.58 ERA, striking out 89 batters in 75 and one third innings pitched.

Freshman catcher Chase Fralick was the second Tiger picked to the All-Freshman team, thriving in his role as Auburn’s everyday catcher. He finished the regular season third on the team in batting average (.344) and hit four home runs while driving in 39 RBI.

Bub Terrell also joined Fralick and Rembert on the All-Freshman team, batting .287 with five home runs and 33 RBI during the regular season.

Third baseman Eric Guevara was the lone Auburn inclusion on the SEC All-Defensive team, committing just two errors in 62 chances.

Auburn will begin the postseason Wednesday night, facing the winner of Texas A&M and Mississippi State in the second round of the SEC tournament. First pitch from Hoover Metropolitan Stadium will be 30 minutes after the conclusion of the 4:30 p.m. game. The game will be televised on SEC Network.
