Heat advisory active for North Alabama until Tuesday night

On Monday at 12:26 p.m. a heat advisory was released by the National Weather Service in effect until Tuesday at 9 p.m. for Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb and Cullman counties.

The weather service adds to prepare for, “Heat index values up to 109 degrees.”

“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” describes the weather service.

Mastering the heat: Guidelines for staying safe in high temperatures

  • Stay hydrated: Make sure to drink plenty of fluids.
  • Seek shelter: Stay in an air-conditioned room.
  • Avoid sun exposure: Stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
  • Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets unattended in hot vehicles – car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
  • Caution outdoors: When working or spending time outside, take extra precautions.
  • Optimal timing: If possible, move strenuous activities to early morning or evening for more favorable conditions.
  • Recognize heat-related issues: Recognize the warning signs and familiarize yourself with symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Dress for comfort: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.

Additional recommendations for outdoor workers:

  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas for outdoor workers.
  • If someone is overwhelmed by the heat, swiftly relocate them to a cool, shaded location.
  • In emergency situations, dial 911 for immediate assistance.

These NWS heat safety directives are essential for safeguarding your well-being when facing high temperatures. Stay well-informed and take the necessary precautions to shield yourself and others from the potential hazards of extreme heat.

Emotional Deion Sanders reveals cancer diagnosis, had bladder removed: ‘He is cured’

Deion Sanders revealed Monday he had surgery to remove his bladder as a result of cancer after a “high-grade” and “very high risk” tumor was found.

“I am pleased to report that the results of the surgery are that he is cured from the cancer,” Dr. Janet Kukreja, the director of urologic oncology at the CU Cancer Center/UCHealth University of Colorado hospital, told the gathered media Monday.

Sanders, 57, plans to coach the Buffaloes this season as he enters his third season at Colorado.

“This wasn’t easy,” an emotional Sanders said at the press conference, adding “God is so good. You have no idea.”

“Men, everybody, get checked out because if it wasn’t me getting tested for something else, they wouldn’t have stumbled on this.”

Sanders said he knew about the surgery even as his son Shedeur Sanders was sliding in the NFL Draft and wasn’t selected until the fifth round..

“There was some scenes you saw, all the bull junk that’s transpired on draft day,” Sanders said. “It wasn’t just that. It was just, I knew as well I had a surgery coming up. My sons, to this day, don’t know what transpired.

“I just told them it was something with my foot, because I wanted to give them the focus on making the team and not focused on dad.”

Sanders said the road to recovers hasn’t been easy. He “can’t pee like I used to pee,” he said. “It’s totally different.”

He also said that he had lost 25 pounds at one point and still needs to gain 12 more.

“I depend on Depend if you know what I mean,” Sanders said. ”I cannot control my bladder. So I get up to go to the bathroom already 4-5 times a night. And I’m sitting there waking up like my grandson. We in the same thing. We got the same problem right now. We’re going through the same trials and tribulations.”

Sanders has dealt with issues surrounding his left foot since having two toes amputated in 2021 because of blood clot issues while he was coaching at Jackson State. He missed media day in 2023, his inaugural year at Colorado, after a procedure to remove a blood clot from his right leg and another to straighten toes on his left foot.

Last month, Coach Prime, it was reported, was been dealing with an unspecified health issue and, as a result, had not attended Colorado summer football camps.

The Buffaloes coach’s son, Deion Sanders Jr., said in a YouTube livestream on Sunday that his dad was resting at his Canyon, Texas, home and “feeling well.”

“He’ll tell y’all soon enough what he going through, what he went through,” the younger Sander said.

Coach Prime took to social media that week but gave no indication of what was keeping him from the football facility.

“Let’s attack today with all we have,” Deion Sanders posted on X. “Let’s give today everything we got. Let’s not save ourselves for tomorrow knowing tomorrow ain’t promised. Let’s go all out, baby. I believe in you & you Believe in what God has bestowed upon u. Let’s go!”

In March, Sanders signed a contract extension through the 2029 season.

The Buffaloes kick off the season on Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech at Folsom Field.

Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes went 4-8 in his first season and 9-4 last season, with an appearance in the Alamo Bowl. They have big shoes to fill in replacing Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Trump’s demand for Washington NFL team name change ignores years of psychological data, experts say

President Donald Trump is threatening to hold up a new stadium deal if Washington’s NFL team did not restore its name to a racial slur, despite decades of psychological research showing the negative mental health impacts of Native American mascots.

The president is demanding a private company change its name to something that researchers have linked to a variety of negative mental health outcomes, particularly for children, said Mark Macarro, president of the National Congress of American Indians. The organization has been pushing back on stereotypes of Native Americans since the 1950s, including Native sports mascots.

“This is a big reminder with this administration that we’re going to take some backward steps,” Macarro said. “We have our studies, we have our receipts, and we can demonstrate that this causes real harm.”

More than two decades of research on Native mascots have shown they lead to heightened rates of depression, self-harm, substance abuse and suicidal ideation among Indigenous peoples, and those impacts are the greatest on children. Citing this data, the American Psychological Association has been recommending the retirement of Native mascots since 2001.

The president believes that franchises who changed their names to “pander to the Woke Left” should immediately restore their original names,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said in a statement to The Associated Press.

“Thanks to President Trump, the days of political correctness and cancel culture are over,” he said.

Some teams change names while others resist

Under pressure from decades of activism, the Washington Redskins — a racial slur and arguably the most egregious example — retired the name in 2020, eventually settling on the Commanders. Later that year, the Cleveland Indians changed its name to the Guardians.

Two major league teams, the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, continue to resist calls to change their names. The Chiefs have banned fans from wearing headdresses or face paint meant to depict Native Americans at games but has resisted prohibiting the use of the “tomahawk chop”, which critics have long called derogatory.

More than 1,500 grade schools across the country — a decrease over the past few years — still use Native mascots, according to the National Congress of American Indians, using names like “Savages” as well as the slur that Trump aims to bring back to the Washington team.

Experts say Native mascots reinforce racial bias

Native American people, activists, and leaders have been asking for the retirement of Native mascots for generations. Popular arguments defending the mascots have been that they “honor” Native people or that it simply boiled down to people being “offended,” said Steph Cross, a professor of psychology and researcher at the University of Oklahoma and a citizen of the Comanche Nation. But now we have decades of data that agrees on the negative mental health impacts, she said.

“Being offended is not even really the problem. That’s a symptom,” Cross said.

She noted that Native mascots aren’t just harmful to Indigenous peoples, they also reinforce racial prejudices among non-Natives, including people who will work directly with Native people like health care professionals and teachers.

“I think about these people who are going to be working with Native children, whether they realize that or not, and how they may unintentionally have these biases,” Cross said.

Stephanie Fryberg, a professor at Northwestern University, who is a member of the Tulalip Tribes and one of the country’s leading researchers on Native mascots, said, “The ultimate impact, whether conscious or unconscious, is bias in American society.”

Her work has also shown Native mascots increase the risk of real psychological harm, especially for young Native people.

“Honoring Native peoples means ending dehumanization in both imagery and policy,” she said. ”Indian Country needs meaningful investment, respect, and the restoration of federal commitments, not more distractions or excuses for inaction.”

Several states pass Native mascot bans

In recent years, several states — including Maine, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and New York — have passed laws or issued directives that ban or require districts to change Native mascots. A law prohibiting them in Illinois stalled this year in the state Senate.

The Trump administration has interjected into other efforts to change Native mascots. This month, the U.S. Department of Education launched an investigation into a Long Island public school district working to retire its Native American-themed mascot.

“The Department of Education has been clear with the state of New York: it is neither legal nor right to prohibit Native American mascots and logos while celebrating European and other cultural imagery in schools,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon.

When it comes to grade schools specifically, the negative impacts on children’s mental health is compounded by the fact that U.S. history standards largely ignore Indigenous history and rarely frame Native Americans as modern people, said Sarah Shear, a professor and researcher at the University of Washington.

In 2015, she was part of a study that found 87% of schools in the U.S. teach about Native Americans in only a pre-1900 context. That hasn’t improved much in the decade since the study, Shear said. Most curriculum also doesn’t present the arguments against harmful stereotypes, like Native Mascots.

“Just on the standards documents alone,” Shear said, “I’m not surprised that Trump and other folks continue to advocate that these mascots are celebratory when they’re not.”

The ‘Basketball Wives’ season 12 finale hits on continued drama between Ty and Ming: How to stream free

The season 12 finale of the hit sports reality series Basketball Wives premieres on VH1 Monday, July 28 at 8/7c.

Those hoping to catch the upcoming finale without cable can find it available for streaming through Philo (free trial) Fubo (free trial), DirecTV (free trial) and Sling (50% off first month).

Previous episode recap

Last week’s episode proved to be one of the most shocking of the season as a physical fight brought out between Jackie Christie and her daughter Chantel during their fourth day spent in Hawaii. The fight was so jaw-dropping and intense that show producers had no other choice than to step in and pull the ladies apart.

Although the physical altercation was the most noteworthy bit of drama from last week’s episode, it wasn’t the only sparring match Jackie was involved in. Earlier during the episode, Evelyn decided to confront Jackie regarding her immature behavior towards Chantel, which led to a very heated, verbal argument that left Jackie fuming as she removed herself from the tense conversation.

Leading up to the all-out brawl between mother and daughter, Jackie and Chantel crossed paths in two separate one-on-ones and both went poorly.

Following the fight, Chantel confided in the other ladies while Jackie resorted to calling her husband, Doug, to rehash what had happened with her daughter.

Additionally, Ty and Ming were also highlighted in last week’s episode as a returned engagement ring threw viewers for a loop, effectively showcasing that the pair’s relationship is surely and completely over.

What to expect from the season 12 finale episode

As the women leave what was supposed to be a pleasant group trip to Hawaii, they begin to process all the fallout that occurred on the trip.

Meanwhile, Jennifer’s prepping for a major movie premiere, which ultimately ends up getting overshadowed by more drama between Ty and Ming as rumors of a new romance within the group plays out on screen.

Alabama company selling steak in auto part parking lots raises concerns: Is it ‘mystery meat’?

If you think buying ribeye from a parking lot pop up event sounds like a huge mis-steak, you’re probably right.

Over the past year, Pelham based meat wholesaler Kenston Farms has repeatedly cropped up on social media with customers questioning if their deals are too good to be true.

Efforts to reach Kenston Farms were not immediately successful.

The company often sets up pop up events in the parking lots of auto part and tractor supply stores across the country advertising “20 premium rib eyes for $39.”

According to their signage, Kenston Farms also sells chicken, seafood, and pork.

But several customers have taken to Facebook and Reddit to say they were disappointed with the quality of their purchase and had trouble getting in touch with customer service after buying.

“Don’t do it,” one Reddit user wrote.

“Still have a few of those black boxes in my freezer. I use it to make homemade dog food as I didn’t want to throw away. I spent a few hundred dollars thinking I got a mega deal. Lesson learned.”

“Never emailed the receipt,” wrote one reviewer on the Better Business Bureau website this month.

“Kenston Farms is “F” rated by the Better Business Bureau for unanswered complaints,” Florida’s WFTV 9 reported.

“The amount I signed for didn’t match up to my [credit card] statement. They actually increased what I had signed for. No response when trying to contact them.”

“Stay away as it’s a scam and an investigation should be launched as I’m sure that I’m not the only one to have total amount changed after signing,” the review continued.

The United States Department of Agriculture grades beef by eight categories, only five of which are usually sold to consumers.

These are prime, choice, select, standard, and commercial, according to its website.

Kenston Farms advertises “premium” steaks, which is not a USDA designation.

According to purchasers the steaks contain a long list of ingredients, including: beef, water, rice starch, plum juice concentrate, sodium phosphates, trehalose, garlic powder, rosemary extract and bromelain.

Dr. Kevin Murphy, a Certified Executive Chef and veteran chop house owner said in an interview with Florida’s WFTV 9 that U.S. stores cannot sell ungraded meat because “you have no idea what you’re getting in this situation.”

“I’ll use the term mystery meat,” he said.

Kenston Farms is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau and currently has a 1.2-star customer rating.

The company was also added to the Ripoff Report website last month by a Northport woman.

The site allows users to report companies they believe are guilty of scams or fraud.

“I was ripped off,” wrote another BBB reviewer.

“…I’m thoroughly disgusted with this ‘meat’ and the company.”

Alabama’s newest $141M beach resort hotel has opened in Gulf Shores: Here’s what it offers

A beachside hotel and convention center project, first OK’d by Gulf Shores city officials more than seven years ago, opened its doors to the public on Friday.

The $141 million Embassy Suites by Hilton Gulf Shores Beach Resort officially opened after a lengthy development and construction project slowed over the years by the pandemic, hurricanes and the rising price of construction materials.

“We’re thrilled to open this landmark project in the heart of Gulf Shores,” said Greg Friedman, management principal and CEO with Atlanta-based Peachtree Group, one of the partners involved in the project.

The project’s opening was announced in a Peachtree news release issued Monday.

“With its irreplaceable beachfront location, resort-style amenities and vibrant gathering spaces, Embassy Suites Gulf Shores Beach Resort is designed to be a centerpiece for visitors and the community alike.”

Peachtree Group’s hospitality division is the hotel’s manager. The development team included Dallas-based Woodbine Development and DD Partners of Birmingham, which includes developer Ron Durham.

The architect of record for the project was PFVS of Atlanta, and the contractor was Robins & Morton of Birmingham.

Rooms, rates

Here are the details about the new hotel:

Location: The hotel is in the heart of the city’s Beach Walking District and across from the Gulf Shores Public Beach. The address is 112 W. Beach Blvd.

Rooms: 257 all-suite guestrooms

A view from a hotel suite balcony at the new Embassy Suites by Hilton Gulf Shores Beach Resort in Gulf Shores, Ala.supplied image

Costs: Room rates vary by season and day of the week. A 1-king bed studio suite costs around $500 per night if booking for Friday, August 1, 2025. The price drops to $247 a night for mid-week bookings in mid-August, according to the Embassy Suites website.

Size: The hotel features 13,620 square feet of enclosed meeting and pre-function space. It is anchored by a 7,800-square-foot ballroom that can host conferences, weddings, and special events.

Parking: The hotel has a three-story parking garage attached to it.

Retail: A total of 7,600 square feet of retail space is available at the hotel, including a Starbucks. An ice cream shop, called Sweet Cone Alabama, will open next year.

Restaurants and bars

The hotel features three places for dining, drinks and entertainment.

Sound Wave: An open-air venue perched above the beach that offers daily live music and features state-of-the-art sound systems, and an extensive food and drink menu. www.soundwavegs.com

The Cove Bar: A poolside bar serving cocktails, light bites, and a relaxing escape from the resort’s busier areas.

Tide & Table: A casual restaurant that blends coastal dining with Southern-inspired cuisine. The three-meal restaurant is situated above street level and offers water views and an indoor-outdoor bar that is described as having a laid-back, welcoming ambiance. www.tideandtablegs.com

Incentives

The City of Gulf Shores contributed in the project’s development with an incentive package approved in 2022. It included rebates for a portion of new sales, lodging and ad valorem taxes generated by the property. The rebates are to be capped at $6.5 million, which is considered the maximum aggregate amount.

The partnership group closed on the 2-acre land purchase for the project in November 2022, spending $6 million to buy the vacant site from the City of Gulf Shores.

According to the city, the incentive package works like this:

  • In the first years of the hotel’s operations, and only after the project is completed, the city will rebate 18% of the lodging and 60% of the sales and ad valorem revenues the project generates.
  • In future years, until the total maximum cap of $6.5 million is reached, the rebate will include 15% of lodging and 50% of sales and ad valorem taxes generated by the project.
  • The city will base annual rebate amounts on actual revenues produced by the project in the preceding 12 months. There is no obligation for the city to rebate any amount that is not actually generated by the operation of the project.
  • The city is supposed to get $1.2 million in cash from the partnership to build 150 additional parking spaces. The money was used to add additional on-street parking and improve the Beach Walking District.
