Packers’ Josh Jacobs: ‘I could have made a guy miss, but I just hit him’
Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs might be a little disappointed on Monday night.
“I had fun at practice today,” Jacobs said on Thursday. “It was actually my first time ever really playing or practicing on snow literally probably in my life. It was fun today.”
While the forecast for kickoff of the Packers’ game against the New Orleans Saints at 7:15 p.m. CST Monday at Lambeau Field calls for a temperature of 32 degrees, if anything’s falling on the frozen tundra, it’s most likely to be freezing drizzle.
But a cold-weather game will do for the former Alabama ball-carrier, too, even if there’s no snow.
“I like the games because cold games, snow games, defenders really don’t really want to hit,” Jacobs said, “and it kind of make them make decisions. You got to kind of make a business decision at times. It’s easier for me because I’m going to make you have to make that decision.”
Jacobs said he tries to send a message early in games if he has the opportunity.
“I’ve had a couple of times where I feel like I could have made a guy miss,” Jacobs said, “but I just hit him just so the team could see that and feel that type of energy from me, so it just sets the tone for what we about to do and who we about to be in that game. And it kind of makes defenders like, ‘Dang, we got to put up with this for four quarters,’ so that’s kind of my mentality. Just trying to go in there and lay it on them, for real.”
Jacobs is coming off a 26-carry game – his second in four weeks – and he’s had as many as 32 rushing attempts in a game this season.
“I saw him after the game,” Green Bay running-backs coach Ben Sirmans told the Packers’ official website. “I was like, ‘Oh man, you probably can’t even walk right now.’ He said, ‘No, I’m good. I’m good.’ He had a nice pep in his step. …
“He’s almost like Wolverine. His body just keeps regenerating itself, and he’s good to go.”
Green Bay has a 6-0 record this season when Jacobs reaches 19 rushing attempts and a 4-4 mark when he hasn’t gotten to that workload.
“I don’t have no bruises, no nothing right now,” Jacobs said. “I feel great. Just as long as I feel good, I feel like we can do whatever we can do. If I was battling with something right now, then I would probably say, like, be cautious. But I feel great. …
“I want the ball. Anything I feel like I can do to help this team win. If we pass the ball 40 times and we win, I’m OK with it. I’m OK with it. I’m not complaining at all. But I definitely want to be part of helping the team win.”
A victory over the Saints would clinch a postseason spot for the Packers with two games remaining on their regular-season schedule.
In his five seasons with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, Jacobs played in one postseason game.
“I’m just ready to play playoff football,” Jacobs said. “Obviously, I’m taking it week-by-week right now, but I can’t wait for that day.”
Jacobs enters Monday night’s game with 1,147 yards and 12 touchdowns on 265 rushing attempts and 302 yards and one touchdown on 31 receptions.
“I’m just having success because of the group of guys that’s in this locker room,” Jacobs said. “They make my job a lot easier. We got guys that like to strain and play for each other, so it makes my job a lot easier.”
