Packers, Jets complete trade of QB Aaron Rodgers

Just in time for the 88th NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets have completed their trade of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

After 18 seasons with the Packers that included four NFL Most Valuable Player awards, one Super Bowl victory and 475 touchdown passes, Rodgers will play for the team he designated as his trade destination for the 2023 season.

According to ESPN, the Jets and Packers are exchanging draft picks in Thursday night’s first round as part of the trade, putting New York at No. 15 and Green Bay at No. 13. In addition to Rodgers, the Jets also get the 170th selection in this year’s draft. The Packers will get the 42nd and 207th picks in this year’s draft along with New York’s second-round selection in the 2024 draft. Next year’s pick will upgrade to a first-rounder if Rodgers takes at least 65 percent of the Jets’ offensive snaps during the 2023 season.

The Jets used three starting quarterbacks in 2022 while compiling a 7-10 record.

New York spent the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. During the 2022 season, Wilson started nine games and completed 132-of-242 passes for 1,688 yards with six touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The Jets haven’t been to the playoffs since 2010 and own the longest postseason drought in the current NFL. Rodgers also did not go to the playoffs last season as the Packers posted an 8-9 mark. But he has 22 games of playoff experience.

The NFL Draft starts on Thursday with the first round. The second and third rounds are set for Friday, with the remaining four rounds on Saturday. ABC, ESPN and NFL Network will televise the draft, starting at 7 p.m. CDT Thursday, 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.
