Oxford senior Hayes Harrison named ASWAâs 2023 Mr. Baseball
Oxford High standout Hayes Harrison checks all the boxes.
Great pitcher. Check.
Great hitter. Check.
Great teammate. Check.
Now, the Northwest Shoals Community College signee can check one final box in his high school career. The senior was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association 2023 Mr. Baseball at that group’s 51st annual convention Sunday night at Jacksonville State University.
“I love Hayes and everything about him,” Oxford coach Wes Brooks said. “He plays with a chip on his shoulder. He maxes out to his full potential each and every day, and that is why his ceiling continues to rise as an athlete.”

Harrison powered the Yellow Jackets to the Class 6A state title this spring. The left-handed pitcher went 13-0 on the mound and hit .382 at the plate. He is the first Oxford player to claim the award since Matthew Maniscalco was named the first Mr. Baseball in 1999.
“He is probably the most focused and locked in player that I have ever coached,” Brooks said of Harrison. “His attitude and approach to the game — as a Christian, as a student — is the most mature attitude and approach that I have seen in 23 years of coaching. He strives to be the best teammate he can possibly be. His desire to compete and max out his full potential every day is his separator.”
Harrison was named the Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year earlier this month. The Alabama Sports Writers Association named him the Class 6A Player of the Year on Saturday. He led the Yellow Jackets to a 39-6 overall record.
In 71 innings pitched this year, Harrison struck out 82 and had a 1.28 ERA. He allowed 43 hits and 11 walks. At the plate, he had a .497 on-base percentage and drove in 38 runs.
Named the title series MVP, Harrison hit .600 for the two games with three runs scored, three RBIs and three walks in a win over Spanish Fort. He was the winning pitcher in Game 1.
“There’s so many different categories that it takes to be great,” Brooks said. “Hayes checks all the boxes. He makes everyone around him great. He comes early, stays late, busts his tail in the offseason and does everything a coach ask of him, but here’s the kicker. … Hayes holds everyone around him to that same standard. And that is the definition of a great leader. His teammates were pretty good too that gave him this opportunity.”
