‘Overjoyed’ Jefferson County Commission president completes cancer treatment
Jefferson County Commission President Jimmie Stephens announced today that he has completed cancer treatment.
Stephens made the announcement after Thursday morning’s commission meeting.
“I am overjoyed and profoundly grateful to share some wonderful personal news,” Stephens said. “Following months of treatment and the steadfast support of my family, friends, constituents and this incredible community, I have successfully completed my treatment for squamous cell carcinoma. Yesterday, my doctors declared me cancer free.”
Those present in the commission chambers gave him a round of applause.
“Words cannot adequately express what your prayers, encouragement and countless acts of kindness have meant to me and my family throughout this journey,” he said. “Your support provided strength on the difficult days and reminded me of the deep well of goodness that exists in our community.”
Stephens, 74, has been on the Jefferson County Commission since 2010 and president since 2014.
“Throughout this process, I remained committed to my responsibilities as commission president, continuing to work every day on behalf of the people of Jefferson County. In many ways, focusing on the business of this county and serving others helped me keep my mind off my condition and stay grounded in what truly matters – making a difference for the people we represent.”
As he concluded his remarks, Commissioner Sheila Tyson, seated to his left, patted him on the back.
“This experience has renewed my faith in God and reaffirmed my belief in the power of compassion and human connection,” Stephens said. “It has reminded me that, even in our most challenging moments, we are never truly alone.”
Stephens noted most of his care came close to home.
“I want to personally acknowledge and thank my exceptional medical teams at UAB and consultations at MD Anderson. Their expertise, dedication and compassion made all the difference in my recovery, and I will forever be grateful for their care. Jefferson County is truly blessed to have such world-class healthcare professionals in our midst. As I move forward, I remain fully committed to the work we are doing together to make Jefferson County a stronger, healthier and more vibrant community for all. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
Stephens then ended the meeting.
