Oscar nominations 2023 live stream: How to watch online
You’re curious to see if “Descendant” makes it from the short list to the really short list of best documentaries. You’re dying to know if “Everything Everywhere All at Once” puts Daniel Scheinert in line for Oscars to match his freshly minted Critics Choice Awards. Tuesday morning, we find out.
Those two films may not be the only films with Alabama connections to win nominations for the upcoming 95th Academy Awards. But they’re certainly out in front in terms of prominence at red-hot buzz.
“Descendant” is an Alabama story through and through. Directed by Mobile native Margaret Brown and co-written by University of South Alabama folklorist Kern Jackson, it showcases the community of Africatown, formed after the Civil War by people who’d survived the last voyage of the slave ship Clotilda. It’s among the nominees for best Documentary Feature Film. It’s one of 15 contenders confirmed by the Academy in late December.
“Everything Everywhere All At Once” is the work of the “The Daniels,” the creative partnership of Birmingham native Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan. At the Critics Choice Awards the film won best picture, best director, best original screenplay, best editing and best supporting actor. Speculation has been raging that it’s a leading contender for some of the top Oscars as well, but until Tuesday morning that’s just speculation – there’s no shortlist for the comparable Oscar categories. The film did, however make it onto shortlists for Original Score, Original Song (“This is a Life”) and Sound, though some saw it as a snub that it wasn’t on the shortlist for Visual Effects.
The film’s editor Paul Rogers, also a Birmingham native, could receive a nomination for Best Film Editing.
