Oregon’s Lanning gets contract extension through 2028

Oregon football coach Dan Lanning has agreed to a contract extension through the 2028 season, it was announced Thursday.

Lanning, who went 10-3 in his first season with the Ducks in 2022, also received a raise to $7 million this year. According to OregonLive.com, he will receive a $200,000 salary increase each season, with $1 million in deferred compensation.

“Dan has exhibited tremendous leadership and an unwavering commitment to providing the best possible experience for our football student-athletes,” Oregon athletics director Rob Mullens said. “This joint commitment is one component of a bold vision for the future of Oregon football that will allow our program to continue to compete at the highest level and on the cutting edge of innovation and excellence. We are grateful to Dan for his dedication to our football student-athletes and university, and we look forward to a bright future on the horizon under his leadership.”

Lanning made $4.6 million last season and was originally set to make $4.7 million in 2023 before the extension. The $45 million under his new contract is fully guaranteed if he is fired without cause, and he would owe $20 million if he left to take another college head-coaching job.

The 37-year-old Lanning was an Alabama graduate assistant in 2015, helping the Crimson Tide to the national championship that season. He then spent two seasons as inside linebackers coach at Memphis before reuniting in 2018 with Kirby Smart at Georgia, where he was defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach for the Bulldogs’ 2021 national title team.

“In coaching, you dream to be at a place where you can both raise your family and win at a high level,” Lanning said. “Oregon has more than exceeded those expectations for my wife, Sauphia, and our three boys, and this will ensure our boys can all graduate from the same school as we continue to grow roots in the community. I am thrilled to be a part of a program that has a shared vision for how to stay on the cutting edge and achieve great success moving forward, and I am grateful to (boosters) Phil and Penny Knight, Rob Mullens and President (John Karl) Scholz for their faith and unwavering support of our program.

“Our relentless pursuit of excellence for the Oregon football program will continue to include an innovative and aggressive approach to student-athlete support, world-class facilities, and all program dynamics as we push forward, and I look forward to all of the great days on the horizon for our student-athletes and Duck fans.”

A Missouri native, Lanning played linebacker at Division II William Jewel College from 2004-07. He served as a high school assistant coach for three seasons, then spent time as a GA at Pittsburgh and Arizona State before getting his first one-field job as defensive backs coach at Sam Houston State in 2014.

Lanning landed the next season at Alabama, where he was part of a Nick Saban staff that also included six current FBS head coaches: Lanning, Smart, Lane Kiffin (Ole Miss), Mel Tucker (Michigan State), Mario Cristobal (Miami) and Billy Napier (Florida).
