Only 1 business left at Brookwood Village after restaurant closes

Add another business to the roster of tenants to desert Brookwood Village, once one of the Birmingham area’s largest shopping malls.

Hickory Tavern, a bar and eatery at 595 Brookwood Village, has closed its doors. A Google search marks the business as “permanently closed.”

With its departure, Five Guys, at 585 Brookwood Village, remains the only business in the traditional shopping center area.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based Hickory Tavern chain was founded in 1997 and still has locations in North and South Carolina. The Brookwood Village location, its first in Alabama, opened in 2015 in the former Zea Rotisserie Grill space next to Books-A-Million.

Built in 1974, Brookwood Village later had a $35 million remodeling in the late 1990s, which added a streetscape with dining, and underwent a $20 million renovation after Cypress Equities bought the 816,000-square-foot mall in 2015. It still fell prey to the diminishing fortunes of enclosed shopping malls, brick-and-mortar retail and the proliferation of other shopping destinations in the area.

The COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown was particularly unkind to Brookwood Village, prompting an exodus of tenants such as Jason’s Deli, Cocina Superior, Brio Tuscan Grille and Books-A-Million. Eventually Macy’s left as well.

The future of the property remains uncertain, as various plans for revitalizing the area have been floated over the years but with little action.
