Oneonta police officer injured as standoff leads to shooting, suspect dead, authorities say

A police officer was shot and a suspect killed during a call for service Monday in an Oneonta neighborhood.

Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon said Oneonta police responded to a call of a suspicious person knocking on the doors of homes in the area of Sand Valley Road.

The initial call was about 11 a.m.

When officers arrived, the man ran into a wooded area, followed by police.

There was a brief standoff in the woods. The suspect, Moon said, brandished a gun and shots were exchanged.

An Oneonta police officer was – reportedly in the leg- and airlifted to UAB Hospital in stable condition. He is expected to be OK.

Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey said the suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is on the scene and will take the lead in the investigation, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
