On Space Command decision anniversary, Alabama officials urge Trump to make Huntsville permanent HQ

Alabama’s two U.S. senators joined the congressman representing Huntsville in introducing a resolution calling on President-elect Donald Trump to “immediately proceed” to establish U.S. Space Command’s permanent headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, reversing President Biden’s decision snubbing Alabama for Colorado.

The resolution introduced Monday in the House by Rep. Dale Strong, R-Huntsville, and in the Senate by Sens. Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville coincides with the fourth anniversary of the secretary of the Air Force announcing Redstone as the “preferred location” of Space Command’s headquarters.

In a move Alabama elected officials claimed was politically motivated, Biden did not heed the secretary’s advice, instead naming Colorado Springs as Space Command headquarters in July 2023 despite the location ranking fifth in a study.

Air Force documents obtained by AL.com showed Huntsville ranked higher than Colorado in 11 of 21 comparisons used by the government in seeking the best site for the new U.S. Space Command’s permanent headquarters. Colorado only bested Alabama in three of the 21 categories.

Monday’s resolution “encourages President Donald J. Trump and his incoming second presidential administration to halt the Biden administration’s disastrous decision and immediately proceed in establishing a permanent headquarters for the United States Space Command at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.”

It “strongly commends” Trump’s first administration “for completing a robust and fact-based Strategic Basing Action focused on what was best to ensure the national security and fiscal responsibility of the United States and well-being of service members and their families.“

Conversely, the resolution “strongly condemns” Biden “for disregarding the findings of the Strategic Basing Action and allowing the headquarters of the United States Space Command to be based at the fifth best location.”
