Ole Miss set to hire former Texas basketball coach Chris Beard, reports say

Ole Miss is set to hire Chris Beard as its new basketball coach, according to multiple reports.

Jeff Goodman of Stadium is reporting the hire could become official “in the next 24-48 hours.” Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports is reporting the two sides are “finalizing a deal.”

Beard, 50, was fired by Texas in January after an arrest on domestic violence charges the previous month. However, his fiancée later recanted her accusations, resulting in the charges being dropped.

Beard went 29-13 in his two seasons at Texas, which won the Big 12 tournament and earned a No. 2 seed for the NCAA tournament under interim coach Rodney Terry. Beard previously coached four seasons at Texas Tech — making the NCAA tournament championship game one year and the Elite Eight another — and won the Sun Belt Conference title in his lone season at Little Rock.

Ole Miss fired Kermit Davis on Feb. 24 amid an 11-20 regular-season finish. The Rebels made the NCAA tournament just once in Davis’ five seasons on the job, losing to Oklahoma in the first round in 2013.

The news of Beard’s impending hire comes a day after another college with major baggage, Will Wade, was hired at McNeese State. Wade was fired by LSU last March after being accused of five major violations by the NCAA.
