‘Old World charm’ abounds at $1 million+ house in Alabama: Take a look inside

“New construction does not have to be boring.” J Manifold Construction, a company in Auburn, proved that with a house honored at this year’s Alabama Remodeling Excellence Awards.

The awards, organized by the Home Builders Association of Alabama, showcase new construction along with remodeling projects, and one of the top-tier categories is “Custom Home Over $1 Million.”

J Manifold Construction, a member of the Lee County Builders Association, created a house that was recognized as one of two runners-up in the $1 million+ category. Known as “Old English Countryside Living,” the house was designed in “Old English/French countryside style featuring a mix of old and new,” the builder says. Materials included marble, white oak, pine, flagstone, cedar shakes and more.

Winners and runners-up in 22 categories were announced on April 15, including “Watching the Warrior,” an extensive remodel of a house on the Black Warrior River. It won best of show and the top prize for a whole house remodel over $500,000.

Here’s how J Manifold Construction described the “Old English Countryside Living” project:

“These homeowners had big dreams of a custom home they could live in longterm and raise their four children. They arrived at an Old English/French countryside style featuring a mix of old and new. Tennessee Mountain Stone and custom stained locally sourced pine siding was chosen for the exterior, with cedar shakes and flagstone porches to create a warm and inviting look. The front door is an arched, reclaimed 19th century French door tucked within a barrel vault ceiling.

“In the entry, a modern chandelier balances the classic mountain white oak flooring and antique doors. Flagstone, used on the hallway and laundry room flooring, makes the home feel like it’s been around for years. The living room is highlighted by a rock fireplace with a cast stone fireplace surround. The kitchen has an Old English feel, with all panel-ready appliances, an antique table island, a rock fireplace, and a custom wooden hood vent. Windows above the sink allow for a view onto the beautiful farm and add light and warmth to the kitchen.

“The use of reclaimed doors and antique furniture throughout the home, from the dining room to the bedrooms, adds to the Old World charm. Italian marble countertops and decorative tiles provide touches of color. The primary bath is another example of old meeting new, as the antique vanities, doors and chandelier are offset by the modern soaker tub. By creatively blending these styles together, this project proves that new construction does not have to be boring.”

The home builders’ association didn’t provide information on the exact location of the house, or who the owners are. That’s typical for these awards, which focus on remodeling and construction projects, and the companies who do them.

Other projects showcased in the Alabama Remodeling Excellence Awards ranged from kitchen and bathroom remodels to basement upgrades and historic preservation. (See the full list of winners and runners-up here. Photos and information on the projects also are featured in the video below.)

To qualify for this year’s competition, projects had to be completed in Alabama between June 30, 2021, and Dec. 31, 2022. More than 100 projects representing 13 local home builders associations were submitted. A panel of judges, made up of builders and remodelers from around the state, reviewed and scored the entries.

A People’s Choice Award — determined by online voting — went to a project called “Elegant Stage for Everyday Living” by Pythoge Custom Homes & Renovations, a member of the Lee County Home Builders Association. It also won the top award for “Custom Home $500,000-$1 Million.”
