Ohatchee, New Hope combine for record 147 points in regulation win for Ohatchee
Records were broken on Friday night.
Ohatchee beat New Hope in a 76-71 win on Friday night in Ohatchee, with the two teams combining for 147 total points.
The win marks the most points scored between two teams without any overtime periods in AHSAA history, according to AHSAA’s online record book; the previous record was from a 2016 game that saw Childersburg beat Coosa Christian 82-64 for 146 total points.
It’s the second-most points scored in a game overall, behind the game between Central-Hayneville and Billingsley is 2023 that saw Central-Hayneville win 78-72 in triple overtime.
New Hope’s 71 points are the second-most in a game from a losing team.
“Obviously, I’ve never been part of anything like that before,” Ohatchee coach Chris Findley told AL.com. “We obviously played really well offensively, really bad defensively, and they can probably say the same. It was up and down. I’m really pleased with the offense, and I’m like, ‘Man, we’ve got to fix some stuff on defense.’”
The final play of the game was a 37-yard Hail Mary from quarterback Jake Roberson to receiver Brayden Collins.
“That’s one of those on a Hail Mary, you try to get your front guy to box out, and if he can, you go up and try to try to get it in front of him. If he gets boxed in, you teach him to try to pop it up and let the guy behind get it. Colby was able to get in there and pop it up and Brayden was back behind him to catch it.”
The Ohatchee coach and former Jacksonville State linebacker said while he hadn’t gotten on social media to look after the game was over, he got a bunch of texts and calls from people congratulating him on the win.
“My phone was blowing up a little bit in the locker room, so I was kind of responding to people there,” Findley said.
Findley said he hopes Ohatchee can build on this performance in practice and help his team learn for the next games down the road.
Ohatchee (1-0) will face off against Locust Fork at home in a Class 3A, Region 6 game on Friday. New Hope (0-1) will host D.A.R. to open Class 4A, Region 8 play.
“Winning a game like that puts you on a high coming out of it,” Findley said. “We’ve got to learn from it, and I say this a lot, but it’s a lot better to learn from a win than a loss. That last play going our way and us able to learn from a win versus coming into your side having given up a couple of times.
“If we can fine tune the defense, make some improvements, figure some stuff out there, and really improve our special teams, then I think we have a shot to be really good. Our offense, obviously, had a good night, and I think that could be something that continues.”
