Offense has big day in first South Alabama football spring scrimmage

South Alabama held its first football scrimmage of the spring on Saturday morning at the Jaguar Training Center, and this day belonged to the offense.

The Jaguars ran approximately 110 plays between regular scrimmage, third-down and red zone periods, and totaled 599 yards and six touchdowns. Quarterbacks Gio Lopez, Bishop Davenport and Jared Hollins combined to complete 39 of 66 passes for 424 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.

It was a clean morning of work for the most part, with no turnovers, no fumbles and only five penalties. The scrimmage was originally set to take place inside Hancock Whitney Stadium, but was moved under the roof at the JTC due to threat of inclement weather.

“I saw flashes of good things, just developing consistency,” South Alabama coach Major Applewhite said. “I saw some very physical plays. I saw some really good things in the red zone. Just inconsistency, what you would expect from the first (scrimmage). But some really bright spots. Some really bright spots for some guys who have come in and for some younger guys who have now been given an opportunity.

“Just consistency, and that’s what we’ve talked about — the consistency in execution, the consistency in the mindset. And the intensity of play throughout the scrimmage. But I was pleased.”

Lopez, the Jaguars’ returning starter at quarterback, worked exclusively with the first-team unit. The sophomore completed 15 of 24 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 18 yards on two carries.

Davenport, the Most Valuable Player of the Jaguars’ Salute to Veterans Bowl win while Lopez was out with injury, completed 16 of 22 passes for 193 yards and two scores on Saturday. The junior worked mostly with the second-team offense (and against the second-team defense), but did have one series with the 1s.

Hollins, a redshirt freshman, completed 8 of 10 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. He worked mostly with the threes, but did have a series with the second-team that ended in a 5-yard touchdown run by Keenan Phillips.

“I think it was good,” Lopez said. “Of course we’ve got stuff we got to clean up. First scrimmage, you’re never going to be super, like ‘hey, we’re ready for the season.’ Never that. But I think we executed a lot.

“We have a lot more stuff to watch film, of course. From my point of view, I think we had a solid first scrimmage.”

Other scoring plays were Davenport’s two touchdowns — 1-yarder to tight end Miller McCrumby on the second series of the day and a 20-yarder to Noah Toster during red-zone work. Hollins’ touchdown was a 27-yard bullet to walk-on Tylen Campbell on his first series, while Lopez’s scoring pass was a 7-yarder to tight end Rod Gibbs during red-zone work.

Starting running back Kentrel Bullock led all rushers with 11 carries for 48 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown. Iverson Celestine added 44 yards on seven carries, while Phillips had 33 on seven attempts, including his TD. The Jaguars ran for 175 yards as a team on 45 attempts.

Toster caught four passes for a team-best 100 yards, while Devin Voisin had six grabs for 80 yards. Anthony Eager had six catches for 57 yards, Jeremy Scott five for 42, Campbell three for 64 and Gibbs three for 35.

“It went great,” Voisin said. “Applewhite really emphasized on Thursday about tackling, so just getting out here with the guys and being able to go live for the real first time felt good.”

The defense did not force any turnovers, but did have a few big moments. The first-, second- and third-team units combined to total five tackles for loss, three pass breakups and two sacks.

The biggest defensive play of the day came during 1s vs. 1s red-zone work on a first-and-goal play from the 3-yard line. Lopez appeared to have Gibbs open for a touchdown, but safety Ty Goodwill delivered a bone-rattling shot that jarred the ball loose.

“I just did my job,” said Goodwill, a sophomore from Mobile. “I saw the ball, I hit him, knocked the ball out. That’s just the thing we do, always be physical.”

South Alabama takes Sunday and Monday off from practice before returning to work on Tuesday. The Jaguars will scrimmage again next Saturday, with the spring game set for April 12.
