Observations from Michiganâs Rose Bowl practice on Friday
Michigan on Friday held its lone open practice leading up to Monday’s Rose Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal against Alabama.
Media were permitted to view roughly 15 minutes of conditioning and position drills at Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer. Here are a few observations:
• Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy looked smooth in his dropbacks, showing little signs of the ankle injury that troubled him late in the regular season.
Also apparently at full speed were running back Blake Corum and offensive linemen Drake Nugent and Trevor Keegan. Linebacker Junior Colson had a protective club on his broken left hand and a brace on his right wrist, but is expected to play on Monday.
• Teams are allowed to bring their entire rosters to bowl games, so there were multiple duplicate numbers in the same position groupings at Friday’s practice. There were triple numbers in some cases, no doubt walk-ons and younger players portraying various Alabama players as part of the Michigan scout team.
• Jack Harbaugh, Jim’s father and a national championship winning coach on the FCS level at Western Kentucky, was in attendance at Friday’s practice. Also present was Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Christopher Hinton, the only former Michigan player on either of the two LA-based NFL teams and the older brother of current Wolverines offensive lineman Myles Hinton.
• Chris Fowler of ESPN was viewing practice and making notes on color-coded lineup sheets. Sideline reporter Holly Rowe was also in attendance charting her own observations. Kirk Herbstreit, who will call the Rose Bowl game along with Fowler and Rowe, was not spotted.
The Rose Bowl game kicks off at 4 p.m. Central in Pasadena, Calif., with TV coverage on ESPN.
