Observations from Alabama’s 5th preseason camp practice

It’s nearly been a week since Alabama football opened preseason camp on July 31, and the Crimson Tide once again took the field Tuesday for practice, after having Monday off. Just as for the previous four sessions, media members were allowed in for several periods.

Defensive players and coaches will speak to reporters later on Tuesday. Before that, here’s what we saw from the Crimson Tide.

– Practice began at 9:20 a.m. CT. Media viewing time started with the fourth period.

– It was 83 degrees in Tuscaloosa during the observable time, with a forecasted high of 96 degrees Tuesday. Players were dressed out in shells, wearing helmets and shoulder pads but not football pants.

– Similar to the first four practices, Alabama had nobody besides quarterbacks wearing black jerseys, which symbolize non-contact participants.

– The playlist for Tuesday’s practice included “Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson, “Sweet Emotion” by Aerosmith and “Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry.

– Since Alabama’s Sunday practice, Chi Omega flags appeared hung from the balconies of condo buildings across Hackberry Lane, overlooking the fields, as Bama Rush began.

– Players worked on individual and position group drills during the observable periods. Reporters did not see any sort of scrimmaging or offense vs. defense drills.

– NFL teams with staffers in attendance included the Tennessee Titans, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Chargers.

– Kalen DeBoer began the media time working with the defense. Before reporters left, he had moved back to his usual spot near the Crimson Tide offense.

– Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack went with a Crimson hoodie for Tuesday’s practice. As is his custom, he stayed close to the Alabama linebackers, who were going through drills that seemingly were meant to prepare them for squaring up to a ball carrier for a tackle.

– Christian Robinson led his outside linebackers through several drills involving player-sized dummies. One seemed meant to teach beating blockers with speed, another saw the group knocking dummies over on their way down the line.

– Alabama’s safeties, led by Colin Hitschler, worked at following the ball and changing direction.

– On the offensive side, the Crimson Tide’s quarterbacks spent much of the observable time passing to tight ends.

– Wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shepherd had his group going through various drills, including one emphasizing blocking. He then began throwing deep passes himself over a dummy held up by another staffer.

– Alabama will return to the practice field on Wednesday. The Crimson Tide opens the 2024 season on Aug. 31, when Western Kentucky visits Tuscaloosa.
