Observations from Alabama football’s 3rd preseason camp practice
It was a busy Saturday on the University of Alabama’s campus when the Crimson Tide football squad convened for its third practice of preseason camp. Across a parking lot, the school was hosting its summer graduation ceremony in Coleman Coliseum.
UA was missing several players due to the ceremony, but the rest took the field on schedule, preparing for the 2024 season-opener against Western Kentucky. Just as for the first two camp practices, media members were allowed in for several periods.
Here’s what we saw during the open time.
– Reporters were allowed in beginning with the start of the fourth period.
– The playlist for Saturday’s practice included “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits, “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones and “Back in Black” by AC/DC.
– LT Overton returned to the practice field. The edge transfer from Texas A&M was not present during the first two sessions due to an illness, according to defensive coordinator Kane Wommack. Overton appeared to be fully participating in drills.
– The Crimson Tide focused on individual and group position drills during the observable periods. Media did not see any scrimmaging.
– Alabama players were wearing shoulder pads and helmets for Saturday’s practice. It was the Crimson Tide’s first time in shells after just having helmets for the first two sessions.
– Players appeared to be working more one-one-one drills than in previous practices. The defensive line worked on shedding blocks and making initial contact during the fourth period.
– Left tackle Kadyn Proctor appeared to still be mostly practicing with the Crimson Tide’s second-team. Proctor missed spring football after briefly transferring to Iowa.
– The temperature was 81 degrees during the observable periods. Alabama’s staff worked hard to keep players cool, with an ice bath at the ready just off of the fields and director of sports medicine Jeff Allen appearing to use a portable vacuum cleaner to cool members of the team.
– Kalen DeBoer stuck mainly with the offense, as usual.
– Alabama’s quarterbacks threw to tight ends during the seventh period of practice. Tight ends did not appear to line up in any particular order, but CJ Dippre led the line.
– Reporters left after the Crimson Tide’s seventh practice period. Alabama will be back on the field Sunday.
