Oakwood University student dead after ‘unfortunate swimming incident’

A 20-year-old north Alabama college student has died following a swimming accident at the university’s campus pool.

Oakwood University officials said Jeavonn Barracks died Thursday, one week after he was hospitalized.

Oakwood University is a historically Black, Seventh-day Adventist institution that offers a biblically based education for service to God and humanity, according to its mission statement.

Barracks was hospitalized on Feb. 15 after an “unfortunate swimming incident” at the Oakwood University Natatorium. No additional details were released.

Barracks was a sophomore at the school.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy,’’ officials said in a statement. “Let us be reminded of the promise that, ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit- Psalm 34:18.”

A prayer vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the Eternal Flame located between the Blake Center and the Eva B. Dykes Library.

The university is also offering counseling services for students.
