Oak Mountain boys whip Prattville to move into AHSAA Class 7A final four
Oak Mountain improved to 29-0 and advanced to the Alabama High School Athletic Association boys soccer Class 7A final four with the 4-1 win over Prattville at home on Monday. The defending state champion Eagles have won 48 consecutive games and are riding a 59-game unbeaten streak that dates back to a 1-1 tie with Oconee County of Watkinsville, Georgia, on March 7, 2024.
Prattville jumped on top with a Porter Sutton goal in the 13th minute. Gabe Capocci scored the first of his 2 goals for Oak Mountain 3 minutes later off an assist from Sam Collins. Gerardo Rodriguez gave the Eagles the lead in the 17th minute, on another Collins assist, to carry a 2-1 edge into halftime.
Oak Mountain went up 3-1 when Collins scored on a free kick in the 60th minute of the contest. Capocci scored his second goal of the day with a header off a Luke Jovanovich cross.
Owen Wells had 2 saves in goal for the Eagles. Prattville keeper Isaiah Myers had 10 saves on the day.
Oak Mountain has outscored its opponents 145-13 and has recorded 17 shutouts this season. Only one team – Hoover on April 17 – has scored more than one goal against Oak Mountain, in the Eagles’ 3-2 two-overtime win.
The Eagles will face Grissom on Thursday at John Hunt Park in Huntsville in the 7A semifinals. This is Oak Mountain’s fourth straight appearance in the final four. The Eagles lost 2-0 in the championship game to Daphne in 2022. In 2023, Huntsville knocked Oak Mountain out 1-0 in the semifinals before the Eagles won last season’s title, beating Auburn 3-0.
Randolph and Southside are playing on Monday for the final spot in the Class 6A semifinals against Gardendale. Indian Springs and Demopolis are playing for the right to meet Faith Academy in the 5A semis.
