Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner transferring to Alabama
Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner, who entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this week, committed Thursday morning to transfer to Alabama.
Buchner made the announcement in a Twitter post after making a visit Wednesday to Tuscaloosa.
“Sometimes life brings opportunities that are beyond anything you can imagine and that is what has happened today,” he wrote. “I have committed to play football for the university of Alabama and head coach Nick Saban. I know this is the best decision for my future, and I can’t wait to get to Tuscaloosa and begin the next step of my football journey.”
Buchner, who played for new Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees the past two seasons in South Bend, becomes a possibility to start for the Tide at quarterback this season.
Alabama now has five scholarship quarterbacks on its roster, including Jalen Milroe (third year) and Ty Simpson (second year), who were competing for the starting job this spring. The NCAA transfer portal window for undergraduates closes at the end of the day Sunday and will not re-open until December, meaning Milroe and Simpson must decide by this weekend whether they want to transfer or remain at Alabama this season.
Freshmen Eli Holstein and Dylan Lonergan are the other two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Alabama has rostered only three scholarship quarterbacks the past three seasons. It last carried four quarterbacks in 2019.
Buchner entered the transfer portal Tuesday with a “do not contact” tag, 247 Sports reported, which typically means the player has a clear understanding of which programs he is considering.
