Not every Madison school has a resource officer. Parents want more support.
Madison County Schools Superintendent Kenneth Kubick has been flooded with emails from parents asking why there isn’t a school resource officer in their school, following the mass shooting at a Christian school in Nashville that killed six people, including three children.
“Being former law enforcement, it’s hard for me to come up with a really good reason to tell them why they don’t have one,” Kubick said.
Kubick, Huntsville City Schools Superintendent Christie Finley and Madison City Schools Superintendent Ed Nichols were asked about school security at the State of the Schools event Wednesday in the aftermath of the shooting at Covenant School on Monday.
Madison County has 30 campuses. Kubick said the county system funded 11 fulltime and one part time SRO. He said the Madison County Sheriff’s Department funds five part time officers and the administrative staff with a lieutenant and a sergeant.
“We have two openings right now,” Kubick said. “They’ve been open for a little while. It’s not because the sheriff’s department doesn’t want to provide us with a deputy. It’s because they don’t have people going into law enforcement either. This isn’t just teaching. We have shortages in our fire department. We have shortages in our emergency medical (services).”
