North McGregor Ave. in Mobile reopens after construction to add sidewalks, parking

North McGregor Avenue from Old Shell Road to the roundabout at Museum Drive is now open to traffic, after being closed since January.

On Thursday, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson, Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson, City Councilmember Gina Gregory and others held a ribbon-cutting for the stretch of road. The project had been anticipated to take a year but was finished several months early. The street re-opened in August.

“There were a lot of people that thought it was supposed to be done yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that,” Stimpson said. “The contractors, the engineers, everybody involved knew there was a lot of pressure to get this street opened and they worked very diligently to make that happen.”

The project included replacing the underground utilities and adding streetlights, sidewalks, parking spaces and other infrastructure. John G. Walton Construction Company; McCrory and Williams, an engineering firm; and W.R. Mitchell Contracting all worked on the project, according to Jason Johnson, a spokesperson for the city of Mobile.

The total cost of the project was $3.4 million. $1.9 million in funding came from Mobile County’s Pay-As-You-Go program and $1.5 million in funding was provided by the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS), which replaced the utility infrastructure underneath the road.
