North Carolina father charged with murdering truck driver who fatally hit 17-year-old son
The North Carolina father of a teen boy is accused of shooting and killing the driver of a pickup truck early Monday morning, moments after the boy was struck and killed by the truck while walking along a road with his family, reports say.
Chad Woods, 41, is charge with second-degree murder in the shooting of Jeffrey McKay, 39, of Youngsville, N.C., a maintenance worker for the North Carolina Department of Corrections, the Person County Sheriff’s Office tells NBC News.
WNCT Channel 9 reports that Woods, his son and another family member were walking along a rural road at about 6:30 a.m. after their vehicle ran out of gas.
McKay pulled over and called 911 after striking the teen with his truck, authorities tell ABC 11. Moments later, Woods pulled out a gun and shot McKay, reports say.
Woods and the other family member, leaving the teen’s body behind, got into McKay’s truck and drove it back to Woods’ home, which was less than a mile away, NBC News reports. Woods is accused of throwing the firearm used in the shooting into a pond.
Authorities tracked Woods to his home after identifying his son’s body, NBC News reports. He also has been charged with larceny of a vehicle.
WNCT reports divers have been searching the pond for the weapon but it has not been located.
“This is kind of a first,” Person County Sgt. Kevin Morris tells ABC11. “I’ve been to people struck by cars and I’ve been to shootings, but I haven’t ever had this happen at the same time. Sad situation all around, for all the families.”
