Lauderdale County authorities say a Brooks High School student is in custody after a threatening email was sent to a school staff member.

According to Lauderdale County School Superintendent Jerry Hill, school officials and the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into the email, which came from an “outside Gmail account over the weekend.”

Brooks High is located in Killen.

The email, Hill said, threatened “an individual staff member and potential violence on campus.” No student names or groups were mentioned.

Investigators eventually took a student into custody, who Hill said was at no time on campus after the email was sent. The sheriff’s office is continuing an investigation into the incident.

Daily security measures remain in place at Lauderdale County Schools, Hill said.

“It is our goal to keep our students and employees as safe as possible when threats arise and investigate immediately,” he said in a statement.
