North Alabama spring roundup: Hazel Green softball falls in tourney semifinals

Hazel Green traveled to Brentwood, Tenn., over the weekend and made it to the semifinals of the Ravenwood Raptor Classic. Green Hill of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., knocked off the Trojans 8-0 on Saturday to end Hazel Green’s tournament run. The Hawks then beat Forrest of Chapel Hill, Tenn., for the championship.

Earlier Saturday, Hazel Green beat Karns of Knoxville 8-1 and Collierville (Tenn.) 11-0 to make the semifinals.

On Friday, Hazel Green lost 6-5 to Columbia Academy (Tenn.) and 6-3 to Green Hill.

In the semifinal loss, Hazel Green starter Mason Quinnie gave up a pair of home runs and four runs in the top of the first. Emma Mooney finished the inning, allowing no runs on one hit. Kailey Hyatt pitched the final two innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits. She gave up a homer, struck out one and walked one.

Hazel Green managed three hits in the four-inning loss. Brooklyn Howard went 1-for-1 at the plate while Mariah Bazile and Sarah Snowden were both 1-for-2 for the Trojans. Hazel Green had two errors in the loss.

Hyatt earned the complete-game win in the quarterfinal victory over Karns. The junior struck out five, allowing one unearned run on five hits. Allie Cole went 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. Mackenzie Bowling was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI. Howard drove in a pair of runs and Briley Zimmerman had one RBI.

Hazel Green out-hit Collierville 7-4 and capitalized on three Dragons’ errors to get the three-inning win on Saturday. Quinnie was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, Zimmerman drove in two runs and Cole had one RBI with a double. Mooney struck out five and allowed four hits.

On Friday, the Trojans jumped to a 5-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first and a pair in the second, but Columbia Academy rallied for six runs in the bottom of the second to get all the runs it needed for the win.

Bazile doubled and drove in a run for Hazel Green. Cole and Howard also had RBIs in the loss. Raegan Wall was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Bowling was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Quinnie was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits in two-thirds of an inning in relief of Hyatt.

Zimmerman homered and had two RBIs in Friday’s loss to Green Hill. Bowling was 2-for-3 and Howard had a double. Quinnie took the loss in relief of Hyatt, allowing two earned runs on three hits. She struck out three and walked one. Hyatt had two strikeouts with three walks over four innings. She allowed two earned runs on five hits.

GIRLS

SOFTBALL

Sparkman 15, Albertville 1: The Senators improved to 18-10 on the season with the runaway win on the road. Senior Ella Boyd struck out nine – pushing her season total over 100 – on the way to the complete-game win.

Boyd also went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Sparkman. Cassie Reasner tied her season-best with her ninth home run, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Sophomore Taylor Gilreath went 3-for-5 with four stolen bases and two RBIs.

SOCCER

Huntsville 1, Albertville 0 (2OT): Freshman Cambria Garcia scored off a half-volley into the side of the net to lift the Panthers to the Class 7A Area 7 win.

The game was tied at 0-0 at 3:52 left to play in regulation when a weather delay stopped play for about 90 minutes. After the break, Huntsville dominated play for the rest of regulation, getting four shots on goal.

Garcia got the game-winner in the second overtime.

Huntsville is 3-1 in area play and will host Sparkman on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

BASEBALL

Huntsville 3, Albertville 1: Huntsville improved to 18-5, completing a three-game Class 7A Area 7 sweep of Albertville, winning two games on the road and one at home.

Sims Bowman struck out eight to earn the seven-inning complete-game win. Bowman allowed one run on three hits. He walked four.

Steven Cavaco went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI Huntsville. Tyce Moody was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

In a 5-2 win in Game 1 of the double-header, Justin Whitaker smacked a solo home run to left-center field and Stone Lawless doubled. Chase Carton and Moody were 1-for-3 with an RBI apiece. Garner Farrell went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Galen Evans struck out nine in five innings, giving up three hits. Cavaco struck out four and allowed two hits in relief.

In the home game 7-0 win in the area series, Brody King struck out 10 and allowed two hits on the way to the complete-game victory. Moody went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Cavaco was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Huntsville and Sparkman will decide the area title in a three-game series this week, with the opener set for Friday at 6 p.m. at Sparkman and a Saturday double-header beginning at 2 p.m. at Huntsville.
