North Alabama spring roundup: Hartselle baseball blanks Muscle Shoals

The top-ranked Class 6A Hartselle Tigers finished off a three-game sweep of Muscle Shoals with a pair of wins on the road on Thursday, shutting out the Trojans in all three games — including a no-hitter in a 7-0 win at home on Tuesday.

Senior Jack Smith, headed to the University of Arkansas, no-hit Muscle Shoals with 15 strikeouts. The left-hander threw 66 strikes in 95 pitches and gave up three walks.

Coleman Mizell’s three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth broke open a scoreless tie as the Tigers earned the win.

Hartselle (15-4) pushed across five runs in the fourth and got a two-run homer from Lawson Williams in the fifth.

Mizell added a double in his 2-for-3 day at the plate. Williams was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Cade Miles, was 2-for-3, and Cam Palahach also doubled for Hartselle.

Reid Ellis took the loss for Muscle Shoals, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

On Thursday, the Tigers blanked Muscle Shoals 10-0 in the first game of the double-header as Peyton Steele and Nic Chumley combined for a two-hitter. Steele struck out five Trojans and Chumley fanned one.

Hartselle scored all the runs it would need when it pushed across a single run in the first inning. The Tigers added three in the third and three more in the fourth with one in the fifth and a pair in the sixth — and final — inning.

Palahach, Miles and Mizelle had two hits apiece in the win.

Braden Mauldin struck out three in 2.1 innings for Muscle Shoals.

In the second game, Hartselle beat the Trojans 11-0 with Jace Meadows pitching a complete-game shutout in his first varsity start. Meadows worked six innings, striking out eight. He allowed two hits and walked three.

Miles and Steele homered for the Tigers. Steele had three RBIs and three runs scored. Miles was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Mizell doubled in the win.

Hadden Vance took the loss for Muscle Shoals, working 5.1 innings.

BOYS

BASEBALL

Westminster Christian 6-8, St. John Paul II 7-7: The Wildcats split a Class 4A Area 13 double-header at St. John Paul II on Thursday to win the week’s three-game series 2-1. Westminster Christian (10-5) won the first game 4-3 at home on Tuesday.

St. John Paul II held off Westminster in the first game on Thursday to win in 13 innings. The Falcons built a 6-0 lead through the first four innings before Westminster stormed back scoring two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Sean Lapinskes smacked a solo home run to left in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-all.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the 13th when Nick Songy singled in Paul Andrzejewski for the win.

SJP2 piled up 13 hits while the Wildcats had 11. Songy pitched 5.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Andrzejewski pitched the final 7.2 innings, giving up only one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts.

Westminster junior Riley Friend had three hits and an RBI in the loss.

In Game 2 Thursday, Westminster built an 8-5 lead through the first four innings and held on with Lapinskes relieving winning pitcher Caleb Goode in the seventh and striking out the side to preserve the win. Lapinskes also went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the winners.

Songy and Andrzjewski both had two hits and RBIs in the loss for St. John Paul II (12-6).

In Tuesday’s win at home, Westminster scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth for the winning margin. The Wildcats racked up 10 hits, led by Jackson Lange who had a double and a home run and two RBIs. Lawson Collier also had a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Lange also got the win on the mound, going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Lapinskes got the save, striking out the side in the seventh inning.

Paul Andrzejewski led the Falcons with two hits and two RBI’s.

New Hope 13, Randolph 0: The Indians improved to 10-6 on the year with the shutout on Tuesday.

Andrew Dudley (3-0) earned the win on the mound, striking out seven in five innings. He gave up five hits and walked two.

Charlie Harbin went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Colby Hall was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and Nathan Adcock was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

SOCCER

Hartselle 1, Decatur 0: The Tigers moved into the finals of the Morgan County Tournament with its second straight shutout with the win over Decatur at the Jack Allen Complex in Decatur. Hartselle will meet Austin, 7-0 winners over Brewer in the other semifinal, at noon on Saturday for the title.

Hartselle’s win was its seventh shutout of the season as goalkeeper Nick Vaughn upped his season total to 50 saves — 3.3 per game. The senior goalie has nine clean sheets this season and has allowed 12 goals — 0.8 goals allowed per match — for the 12-2-2 Tigers.

Junior Hunter Lawrence scored Hartselle’s goal in the second half on an assist from Alex Hatfield.

Hartselle has scored 57 goals this season while allowing 14.

In a Tuesday night second-round match, Hartselle blanked West Morgan 4-0 with Owen Bennich recording a hat trick — running his tournament total to seven goals. Bennich has 24 goals this season.

Luke Minnon added a goal and an assist for Hartselle. Eli Moore and Ethan Medendorp also had assists in the win.

On Monday, Hartselle whipped Danville 10-1 with Bennich scoring four goals. Slate Gargus scored two goals for Hartselle. Minnon, Luke Vinson, Roberto Ramirez and Justin Mintzer also had goals in the win.

Grissom 1, James Clemens 0: The second-ranked Class 7A Tigers ran their record to 9-0-2 with the win on the road on Tuesday. Maddox Quigley notched the lone goal of the night in the first half. Grissom keeper Daley Baughn made three saves.

James Clemens dropped to 3-8-2 on the season.

Hazel Green 8, Alabama Cyber Tech 0: The Trojans got a pair of goals from Edgar Rodriguez and Riley Cowan in the win over the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering in a home game on Thursday.

Hazel Green (11-1-1) also got goals from Jadon DeMange, Dennis Daversa, Jeremiah Batista and Ashton Bright.

The Trojans got two assists each from Bright and Rodriguez along with single assists from Elijah Cooper, DeMange and Batista.

The Sentinels dropped to 0-7 on the season.

On Tuesday, the Trojans blanked Mae Jemison 4-0 at home with Rodriguez and Anthony Lieber scoring a pair of goals each. Rodriguez also had an assist in the win.

Batista, Cooper and DeMange also had assists for Hazel Green.

The Trojans are 4-0 in area play while Mae Jemison (1-3-2) dropped to 1-3 in the area.

TENNIS

Florence 9, Albertville 0: The Falcons pushed their record to 12-0 on the season with the road sweep on Monday. Florence is 3-0 in section play.

In singles play, Florence’s Tai Do defeated Curtis Richey 10-7 at No. 1. Jack White beat Alex Smith 10-8 at No. 2. Jack Champion won at No. 3, beating Sam Barclift 10-4. Cohen Joiner topped Griffin Nixon 10-3 at No. 4. Cade Black beat Nathan Stuart 10-6 at No. 5. Slade Campbell topped Daniel Chejin 10-4 at No. 6.

Florence opened the day sweeping the doubles matches as Do/White beat Smith/Barclift 11-10 (7-5) at No. 1. Joiner/Black beat Richey/Nixon 10-4 at No. 2 and Champion/Campbell beat Stuart/Chejin 10-7 at No. 3.

GIRLS

SOCCER

Hazel Green 7, Madison Academy 2: Eighth-grader Reanna Chapman scored four goals to boost the 10th-ranked Class 6A Trojans past Madison Academy in a home match on Thursday.

Hazel Green also got goals from eighth-grader Charli Cantrell and seniors Makenna Boyle and Tynasha Mills.

Charli Cantrell, junior Aria Stout and freshman Riley George had assists in the win.

The Trojans improved to 10-2 on the year and Madison Academy is 4-4.

On Tuesday, Hazel Green whipped Mae Jemison 15-0 in another home match. Hazel Green got two goals from freshmen and two from eighth-graders.

Senior Boyle scored four goals for Hazel Green. The Trojans also got goals from seniors Kirkleigh Sweetman, Charity Rogers, Savannah Williams, Gracie Willett and Brianna Cooper, junior Drea Cooper, sophomore Addy Humphrey, eighth-graders Maddy Cantrell and Chapman and freshmen George and Taylor Hale.

Rogers and Boyle had two assists each in the win while Willett, Maddy Cantrell and Cooper had one each.

Hazel Green improved to 2-0 in Area 16 play. Mae Jemison is 0-7 and 0-3.

On Monday, Boyle booted in five goals in a 12-0 win at home over Lee-Huntsville.

Chapman had a hat trick in the win and Sweetman scored twice in the win. Hazel Green also got goals from Charli Cantrell and senior Tynasha Mills.

Maddy Cantrell and Chapman had two assists each for the Trojans. Humphrey and Sweetman also had assists.

Randolph 3, Athens 2: The Raiders improved to 3-3 on the season in picking up a win in its first Class 6A Area 15 match on Thursday.

Freshman Anne Fowlkes Schreeder scored a pair of goals for Randolph in the home win. Senior Sarah Kate Mitchell scored a goal and had an assist. Senior Madison DeOrio also had an assist.

Jane Connell and Norah Connell made several standout defensive plays for the Raiders.

Randolph had 14 shots on the night while Athens had 12.

West Morgan 8, Brewer 1: The Rebels cruised past Brewer in the Morgan County Tournament in Decatur on Monday. West Morgan led 7-0 at the half.

Brandy Hernandez poured in five goals in the win. West Morgan also got goals from Alexandra Rodriguez and Xiomara Solis. The Rebels also scored an own goal off a corner kick by Hernandez.

Madison Parker had two assists and Rodriguez had one. Diana Romero had two saves for West Morgan (7-4).

SOFTBALL

Madison County 6, North Jackson 4: The sixth-ranked Tigers improved to 17-3 on the year, 2-0 in Class 4A Area 14 with the win at home in Gurley on Thursday.

Gracyn Spicer gave up four hits and struck out six in seven innings to earn the win. Allie Yeary and Aubrey Shaddix led Madison County at the plate with three hits each.

Destry Lambert took the loss for North Jackson.

On Tuesday, Madison County blanked Brewer 3-0 with Marion Gamble allowing eight hits in 6.1 innings. She struck out four in the win.

Shaddix and Rachel McCown had two hits each for the Tigers.

Bronwyn Borden took the loss for Brewer.

Madison Academy 16, Columbia 0: Rachael Andrews recorded a no-hitter against Columbia on Thursday, striking out seven Eagles in the win.

Ryan McBride smacked a grand slam home run for Madison Academy and Abby Boyd was 3-for-3 with a homer.

On Tuesday, Cataryna Schreiber struck out nine as the Mustangs topped Elkmont 10-6 in a Class 3A Area 15 contest.

Boyd led Madison Academy at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Andrews went 2-for-2 and scored three times. Memphis Houston was 2-for-3 and Emily Burgreen went 2-for-4 in the win.

Russellville 6, Lawrence County 3 (11): The Golden Tigers scored three runs in the 11th inning to edge Lawrence County at Moulton on Tuesday in a 5A Area 16 game. The teams battled to a 1-1 tie through eight innings before both scored a pair of runs in the ninth.

Lawrence County got its first run in the bottom of the third before the visitors answered in the top of the fourth.

The Tigers out-hit Lawrence County 16 to 11. The Red Devils committed five errors to three for Russellville.

Brooklyn Butler went 4-for-6 for Russellville with three RBIs and a double. Paislee James was also 4-for-6, Addison Holcomb was 2-for-5 and Haylee Rikard had a pair of hits in six at-bats. James pitched a complete game, allowing 11 hits in 11 innings with a pair of strikeouts and one walk. James gave up three runs — one earned — in picking up the win.

McKenzie Hyche was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs — four earned — on 16 hits in 10.1 innings. She struck out eight and walked one.

Hyche also smacked a triple for Lawrence County. She was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Addison Plaxco doubled in the loss. Bella Cross was 2-for-5, Ava Templeton went 2-for-6 with two runs scored.

Lawrence County 5, Brewer 4: Sophomore AB McKay smacked a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Red Devils past Brewer on Monday. Junior McKenzie Hyche shut the door with a scoreless half-inning to end the game and pick up the win in relief.

McKay went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double for the winners. Ava Templeton finished 1-for-3 with a run scored for Lawrence County. Bella Cross was 1-for-2 for the Devils (14-8).

Gracie Lawrence went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Patriots. Cheyenne Lucas was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Brewer (11-4-1). Ava Walls doubled in her one at-bat with a run scored.

Bronwyn Borden took the loss in the circle, allowing two runs — one earned — in four innings of relief. She struck out six and walked two.

Huntsville 6, Hazel Green 2: The Crimson Panthers scored all their runs in the first two innings — five in the bottom of the second — on the way to the home win on Thursday.

Brooklyn Johnson went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBIs for Huntsville. Addison Barclay tripled and drove in a run and winning pitcher Katie Schuler had a solo home run. Schuler gave up two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks over 4.1 innings. Shelby Ulrich allowed one hit over 2.2 innings to close out the win.

Allie Cole was 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double for Hazel Green. Alyssa Pittner also drove in a run with one hit in two at-bats.

Kailey Hyatt took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs — three earned — on three hits in 1.1 innings.

Hazel Green 15, Columbia 0: Emma Mooney threw a three-inning no-hitter as Hazel Green blasted Columbia on Tuesday. Mooney struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Hazel Green had seven hits, including a home run and a double.

Brooklyn Howard homered for the Trojans. She was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Briley Zimmerman was 1-for-1 with a pair of RBIs with two runs scored. Alyssa Pittner doubled, drove in a run and scored twice for the winners.

Delia Anes was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs — six earned — on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Scottsboro 3, Hazel Green 1: The Wildcats scored a pair of runs in the second inning and another in the fourth in the home win on Monday. Hazel Green, which out-hit Scottsboro 7-4, got its lone run in the fifth.

The Trojans committed three errors on the day while Scottsboro had one. Hazel Green left eight runners on base while the home team stranded four.

Shila Wadkins drove in a pair of runs for Scottsboro while Anna Stuart Dawson and Kambrie Doss both went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Dawson earned the win in the circle, allowing one earned run on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Mason Quinnie took the loss for Hazel Green, allowing two unearned runs on three hits in two innings. She struck out one and walked one. Kailey Hyatt worked five innings, allowing on unearned run on one hit.

Raegan Wall and Mariah Bazile had triples in the loss while Mackenzie Bowling had a double. Wall was 3-for-4 with a run scored and Payton Pike went 2-for-3.

TENNIS

Albertville 6, Florence 3: The Aggies won five of six singles matches and took the No. 1 doubles match to earn the win at home on Monday.

In singles, Marylda Chejin beat Sarah Liles 10-8 at No. 1, Glendy Morales beat Amy DeGroote 10-4 at No. 2, Hannah Mastin beat Ellas Coussons 10-1 at No. 3, Mamy Adams blanked Luci Vacik 10-0 at No. 4 and Caroline Goodwin topped Rylan Hayes 10-8 at No. 5. Florence’s EK Davis beat Katy Morrison 10-2 at No. 6.

In doubles, Chejin/Morales beat Liles/Coussons 10-2 for Albertville at No. 1. Florence’s DeGroote/Davis beat Mastin/Adams 10-8 at No. 2 and Vacik/Hayes beat Emma Greer/Kaylin Bomar 10-6 at No. 3.
