North Alabama roundup: Hartselle baseball wraps up 6A Area 14 title

Second-ranked Hartselle finished a three-game Area 14 sweep with a pair of wins at home on Thursday, beating the Bearcats 6-5 and 6-3 to earn the Class 6A baseball area title for the second straight season.

The Tigers blasted three home runs in the first two innings of Game 1, with Peyton Steele ripping a three-run homer in the first followed by a solo home run by Cade Miles and a two-run round-tripper by Coleman Mizell in the second to put the home team up 6-0.

Cullman climbed back into the game with solo runs in the third and fourth, a pair in the fifth – on a Paxton Ponder home run – and a solo run in the seventh.

Jack Smith got the win for Hartselle, throwing six innings and allowing four runs – three earned – on four hits. He struck out five and walked three.

Zane Watwood took the loss for Cullman, giving up six runs – five earned – on four hits in 1.2 innings. Watwood struck out two and walked three.

Elijah Hays went 1-for-3 for the Bearcats with an RBI and Cody Jones also recorded an RBI.

In Game 2, Hartselle pounded out four extra-base hits with Eli Tidwell hammering a triple and Greyson Howard, Mizell and Jo Jo Williamson smacking doubles.

Nic Chumley, the second of three relievers, got the win by allowing one unearned run on three hits over two innings. Chumley struck out two and walked none.

Starter Cooper Loftin took the loss for Cullman, giving up five earned runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked three.

Hays had a double and Tucker Cagle went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Watwood went 2-for-4.

On Tuesday, Howard pitched a five-inning one-hitter as Hartselle beat Cullman 11-0 on the road. Howard finished with three strikeouts and had a double in the win.

Steele slapped a home run with two RBIs for Hartselle. Williamson was 2-for-3 with a double and Mizell went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Cam Palahach and Howard both had two hits in the win.

Ponder got Cullman’s lone hit. Cagle was saddled with the loss, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits.

BASEBALL

West Limestone 17, Rogers 0: West Limestone senior Colin Patterson pitched a five-inning no-hitter at home on Tuesday, striking out seven Pirates.

Patterson was also perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Braxton Griffin went 2-for-2 with two doubles and four RBIs. Ian Burroughs went 2-for-2 with a triple and Landon Navas was 2-for-4.

On Thursday, the Wildcats whipped Rogers 8-1 to secure a spot in the postseason, playing at Jacksonville on April 21. West Limestone is 20-10 on the season.

Griffin picked up the win with a complete-game three-hitter. He gave up one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts. He also ripped a triple and had two RBIs, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Owen Lauderdale was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Dawson Downs was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Weston Owens had a double and an RBI.

Westminster Christian 5-14, Madison County 6-10: Westminster Christian clinched the Class 4A Area 13 regular-season crown with the win in Game 2 of Thursday’s double-header in Huntsville. The Wildcats blanked Madison County 12-0 on the road on Tuesday.

Sean Lapinskes led Westminster with three of the Wildcats’ 15 hits in Game 2. Jackson Lange and Ben Goodwin had a pair of hits each. Goodwin had three RBIs.

Westminster (15-8) led 8-7 headed into the fourth inning, before Madison County got two runs in the inning and another in the fifth to lead 10-8 headed into the bottom of the fifth.

The Wildcats rallied with hits from Tyler Engle, Lange, Lapinskes and Goodwin to score four runs. Westminster scored two more in the sixth and Amos Baldwin shut down the Tigers in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

The Tigers were led by Jake Thornton with two hits and two RBIs and Memphis Scott with two hits and three runs scored.

In Tuesday’s 12-0 win, Josh Goode pitched a two-hit shutout. Westminster pounded out 16 hits, scoring two runs in the first inning, four in the third, two in the fourth and clinched the run-rule win with four more runs in the fifth.

Lapinskes drove in four runs as he went 3-for-3 with a home run in the first inning, a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a single in the fifth. Lawson Collier went 3-for-4 with three RBIs with two runs scored.

St. John Paul II 8, New Hope 5: The Falcons secured a spot in the Class 4A Area 13 playoff with the home win on Tuesday.

Cody Johnson struck out four, allowing two runs on two hits over 4.1 innings to pick up the win. He helped his cause at the plate with three hits.

Paul Andrejewski drove in a pair of runs for St. John Paul II (17-8). On the season, the senior who has committed to Army West Point, has a .536 batting average with a .797 slugging percentage.

Junior catcher Luke Songy is batting .470 for the Falcons.

Arab 8, Guntersville 0: The fourth-ranked Knights wrapped up the Class 5A Area 15 regular-season title with the win, improving to 26-6 on the season and 5-0 in area play.

Brody McCain earned the complete-game win, striking out 12, allowing four hits and walking one.

Spencer Strickland went 1-for-3 with a homer for Arab. JD Hall had a two-RBI double, McCain helped his cause with a two-RBI single. Drew Puccio went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple.

GIRLS

SOFTBALL

Westminster Christian 15 Randolph 0: Freshman Carleigh Gothart allowed only one batter to reach base in tossing a no-hitter against Class 4A Area 15 rival Randolph. Skyler Ammons reached on a hit by pitch in the first inning for the Raiders, but Gothart struck out eight of the 13 batters she faced.

The freshman also came up big at the plate with two hits and two RBIs and one run scored. Freshman Ty Reed led the Wildcats, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs.

Westminster (11-11-1) scored two runs in the opening inning, five in the second and put the game away in the bottom of the fourth with eight runs, capped by Reed’s single to left that drove in Brooke McDonald and Gothart.

The Wildcats finished area play as the second seed, behind West Limestone.

Lawrence County 13, West Point 7: The Red Devils capitalized on six extra-base hits – three by freshman Ava Templeton – on the way to the road win on Thursday. Templeton belted a triple and two doubles for Lawrence County. The lead-off hitter finished 3-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs.

Andee McKay, Adagrace Calhoun and McKenzie Hyche also had doubles in the win. McKay was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Hyche was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Addison Plaxco went 2-for-5 and drove in five runs and scored twice. Alivia Terry was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in.

Raegan Johnson earned the win in the circle, allowing four hits and two unearned runs in 5.1 innings of relief. Starter Calhoun gave up five runs – three earned – on six hits in 1.2 innings

Kortni Baker took the loss for West Point, giving up 13 runs – 11 earned – on 17 hits over five innings. Baker also had a double for the Warriors.

Alexis Kimbrill went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in the loss. Brinlee Phillips had three hits in four at-bats and Bethany Minck drove in a pair of runs. Macayla Wilkins went 2-for-4 for the Warriors.

Russellville 5, Lawrence County 2: The Golden Tigers out-hit the visitors 12-5 on Tuesday to earn the win, scoring single runs in the first, fifth and sixth and a pair of runs in the fourth inning.

Paislee James pitched a complete game in picking up the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits. She struck out four and walked two. James also went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Summer Butler and Brooklyn Butler were both 3-for-4 for the winners. Haylee Rikard went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Jacey Moore was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Andee McKay homered and Ava Templeton had a pair of triples for Lawrence County. Both went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI each and McKay scoring a pair of runs.

Madison County 11, New Hope 0: Gracyn Spicer struck out eight in five innings and gave up two hits in the road win on Tuesday for fifth-ranked Class 4A Madison County (24-5).

Livy Huter and Allie Yeary had three hits each for the Tigers, who improved to 5-0 in Area 14. Anna Sanders had a pair of hits in the win.

McKinnlee Keel and Lauren Kelly had New Hope’s hits.

Elkmont 3, Madison Academy 0: Elkmont blanked the Mustangs on the road on Tuesday, despite Madison Academy’s Cat Schreiber striking out 11 Red Devils over seven innings in the Class 3A Area 15 game.

Racheal Andrews went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks in the loss.

SOCCER

Randolph 3, Athens 1: Senior Sarah Kate Mitchell scored twice as the Raiders wrapped up the Class 6A Area 15 regular-season title. Randolph (7-3-1) improved to 4-0 in area play.

Freshman Anne Fowlkes Schreeder also scored in the win. Freshman Asha Arora and sophomore Ellie Heilman had one assist each.

Keeper Chelsea McFarland had a big save on a penalty kick to prevent Athens from taking a 1-0 edge.

Randolph had 15 shots on goal while Athens had six.

West Morgan 6, West Limestone 0: Diana Romero had four saves in the home shutout for the Rebels on Tuesday.

West Morgan scored all of its goals in the first half. Brandy Hernandez had a hat trick and an assist in the Class 4A Area 7 win. Alexandra Rodriguez scored twice and Madison Parker had a goal and three assists.

The Rebels improved to 12-7 overall and 6-0 in area play.
