North Alabama man found dead in prison, department investigating

A man serving time for a drug conviction was found dead in a central Alabama prison last week.

Brandon Taylor was found unresponsive in his bed on Dec. 27 at Staton Correctional Facility, according to Alabama Department of Corrections spokesperson Kelly Betts. Taylor, 39, was taken to the prison’s healthcare unit “where life-saving measures were unsuccessful,” Betts said.

Taylor was pronounced dead by medical staff.

Convicted in Madison County, Taylor was serving a 60-month sentence for possession/receiving a controlled substance.

The ADOC Law Enforcement Services Division is investigating the man’s death. More information will be available following that investigation, said Betts.

It’s unclear how many deaths were reported at the prison during the month of December, after an October 2022 statistical report said the ADOC facilities’ death totals would be moved to quarterly reports instead of being included in monthly reports. In September 2022, when the department was still including death counts in the reports, the total for the year was 11. That total does not include four reported suicides.
