North Alabama inmate dies following apparent medical issue, authorities say

A Lawrence County inmate died following an apparent medical issue Monday, according to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

In an announcement, the agency said an inmate alerted staff at the county jail Monday at about 9 a.m. that an inmate was having a medical emergency.

Jail staff found the inmate unresponsive and not breathing, and staff and the jail nurse performed CPR. 

The inmate was transported to Lawrence Medical Center in Moulton, where the inmate was pronounced dead. 

Authorities have not released the name of the inmate, pending all notifications of family. 

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct an in-custody death investigation. The inmate’s body has been transported to the Department of Forensics Science in Huntsville for an autopsy.
